The Defence Secretary.

Most diplomatic pressure on US to stop bombing because Dubai has lots of influential billionaires living there and lots of western tourists who will put pressure on Western governments and because it's not good for the UAE government and it's image so puts pressure on UAE to tell the US not to use bases located there.

It's an act of desperation as they haven't got the capability to take on the US and Israeli armies directly and they know it.

They have to go for softer targets in the hope it will provoke enough anger and fear.

Just keep remembering this is a sign of limited capability. They can't sustain the attacks for long. Every time they launch the US and Israel gain intel about where missiles and drones have come from so they can be taken out before being launched.

There's also a proxy conflict between Iran and the UAE in Sudan.

Hi Eleanor, it was on the BBC news, just now.

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2026 10:12

Confirmed in an interview with John Healey on Sky News.

Being repeated all over twitter.

Cyprus isn't in NATO but the British bases there are.

(Article 5 considerations here).

Alternativelyviewed · 01/03/2026 10:13

@AtIusvue a nice reminder there of the type of country Dubai is ! In both way

I'm not repeating bollocks. I source stuff properly thanks. Going 'ohh where have you got something so significant from I don't believe you' isn't helpful either.

It's everywhere on the internet. Like totally viral.

bloodredfeaturewall · 01/03/2026 10:15

are the cyprus airbases on the eu side?

GlomOfNit · 01/03/2026 10:15

Actually, John Healey said those two missiles were flying 'in the direction of Cyprus' (which could be interpreted as being in the direction of Israel before they got anywhere near Cyprus) and that there isn't any actual evidence they were deliberately aimed AT Akrotiri. Headlines (eg the annoying pop-up that the Independent seems to have installed on my laptop!) have been very clickbaity but really, there seems no concrete reason to think the RAF base on Cyprus was deliberately targeted.

Really hope not, anyway.

bloody hell, of course they are! 'North Cyprus' is an illegal occupation by Turkey, it's not actually internationally recognised.

The RAF base is at Akroriti, the jutting out peninsula on the Republic of Cyprus' south coast, midway between Larnaca and Limassol.

It's relevant to anyone thinking of travelling to Cyprus who may be reading this thread too because they are slightly nervous about the situation.

That's fairly reasonable in terms of considering other travellers as well as the OP.

And yes it's relevant to the OP in terms of the scope of current disruption to airspace and how serious it is / how long it may take to resolve.

I'm sorry you disapprove of my comments on the situation.

What he actually said was that they were ‘fired in the direction of Cyprus, but not necessarily targeting the country’

I always said I'd never holiday in dubai and I hope everyone who said it was perfectly safe for tourism / work / living all feel stupid now.
Only themselves to blame if they feel scared. Its not like we didn't know Dubai was at risk - the Middle East has always been volatile. Plus I'd be scared to even fart with all the rules they have in place.
DD is studying teacher training and so many young people go there to teach if they can't get jobs (we're in Scotland so lots of graduates are like only 21). I'd be pulling my hair out if my child were stuck there today. Fortunately, she agreed months ago it wouldn't be something she ever did, she'd sooner just cut grass.

What an unhelpful thing to say. I hope next time something unfortunate happens to you someone is there to say ‘I told you so’. I hope your children don’t turn out to be as judgemental and you. As if there isn’t already enough negativity going on in the world. You have made yourself sound completely uneducated. i especially liked the eloquent ‘fart’ comment.

Quite. Nobody wants accuracy to get in the way of some scaremongering, though do they.

Of course it’s possible the missiles were aimed at Cyprus, but at this stage it’s important to know that this is not what was said by the Defence Secretary. That might change.

BeKhakiReader · 01/03/2026 10:22

Hmm. Yes. If he'd have said yes it was targeting Cyprus, what do you think that would do to pressure on government in terms of its actions with Iran? He can't actually say 'iran was firing at us but we aren't doing anything else about it' especially after we've made a big point of not supporting Trump and calling it an illegal war can he?

And given the targeting of Oman I hardly think it's just a 'oh well they might have had a stray missile or two going towards a British base'.

It's a really awkward and difficult point for the British. We clearly don't want to get involved but Iran want to drag everyone into this - otherwise why target hotels in Dubai...

Hmmm. Yes. Definitely not at Cyprus.

Ukraine's problem with drones is they don't have air superiority. They can't stop launch. The reverse is true for Russia. Iran is a different prospect for this reason. The US and Israel have control of it's skies. This not only matters but is crucial.

Ukraine said this from the very beginning of its war too.

Yes I'm aware and I guess I should probably have expanded on that in that post...

As you say Israel/US looks like having air superiority/even supremacy over a large part of Iran so IMO it's going to be increasingly difficult for what's left of Iran's missile force to operate...basically we are are talking about big missiles usually carried on and launched from a big truck, possibly take time to set up and so can be relatively easy to detect and interdict.

The problem with the Shahed style drones is that whilst they are small and less lethal than the missiles they can be launched from something the size of a small truck/RV and the launch platform doesn't need to be exposed for long, if at all, during launch....

Air superiority/supremacy or not there's a chance the drones will last longer as a threat to adjacent states than the medium range missiles.

I’m not qualified to comment on the politics. I was correcting the emphatic assertion made that this is what had been said. I think it’s really important that facts are passed on accurately, that’s all.

Yep. True.

But even then.

They still need trained men to launch them.

And they still have factories to build them.

Where do you hide these thousands of drones too. They are unlikely to be allowed individually hidden away.

All drones launched can be traced backwards to these sites.

notimagain · 01/03/2026 10:37

As others have said a basic statement of "fired in the direction of Cyprus" tells us almost nothing.

Do they let the Americans use it sometimes? I saw on a map of us current locations a battleship not far from the Cypriot coast.
