Massive double standards in age gap relationship

Can't quite believe im writing this but there are a whopping three years between me and boyfriend, Im older (38, hes 35) and I just cant believe how many comments ive had on this compared to the many men ive gone out with who have been shit loads older.
Even my boyfriend makes comments every now and then, like gently ribbing me/joking about it.
I was with my ex for a decade and he was 9 years older than me, nobody batted an eyelid.
The fuck? 😂
Its just so weird.

Also kind of related: I cant stand how my dad is always saying (in relation to my brother) "ah now listen, guys mature at a different pace...much slower than women".
My brother is 33 years old...

All these men in your life are very very weird (and thick)

IckyIck · 28/02/2026 15:44

You cradle snatcher!

Your father probably doesn't realise that you are no longer children. My mother comes out with comments like Peter's hair is white now and I say well he is in his mid-50s, and she says 'but you are all still children in my eyes'.

tilypu · 28/02/2026 15:48

Honestly 3 years barely qualifies as an age gap relationship.

Turn it around! Every time anyone says anything, especially your OH, speak about his mummy issues/Oedipus complex. I don't think he'll mention it much if you do...

How strange. I’m 10 years older than dh. When we first met he was 26 and a couple of his mates commented. That was it though and nearly 30 years later no one bats an eyelid.

WonkyMirror · 28/02/2026 21:45

I’m 4yrs older than DH, we never yet comments, that’s weird.

BadLad · 28/02/2026 22:17

8 years here - DW older than me - and we sometimes get surprised looks at first, but no comments any more. People commented more when we got married, asking incredulously what would happen when I wanted children. That was very annoying, and earned them some very choice words.

Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 14:53

How odd!

Maybe you just look loads more older than him than just 3 years?

Rainydaycat · 01/03/2026 14:55

I know of a bloke who married a woman of 38 when he was 18. I find that weird

3? Behave yourself lol.

My mum was 3 years older than my dad and apart from the very occasional 'toy boy' joke mostly from her, it never even registered for most people they knew.

Of course you wouldn't though.

That's not even an age gap relationship and nor is the OP's obviously.

Nerocostapret · 01/03/2026 15:00

The weird thing is - for people to know the age gap, it’s because they have asked both your ages.

I suspect massive hyperbole is at play here!

mindutopia · 01/03/2026 15:21

I’m 7 years older than Dh. We met when he was 21 (and still in uni 🫣) and I was 28. We are 45 and 38 now. I’m not sure anyone has ever really commented on it, except for me because I sort of make fun of it a bit.

Well that’s what I’m saying, I don’t think it is an age gap thing, so the op getting comments is weird.

Yeah I totally agree.

I think a PP may have been right regarding hyperbole at play.
