A guy selling petrol trying to get people to buy more, no way!

alot of the pumps were already out of petrol. This was a supermarket chain. It was busy enough. He wasn’t trying to sell more..

I passed Sainsbury's petrol station, no queues but people were buying petrol. Went to Sainsbury's today, ran out of milk, and petrol station was almost empty with just three cars filling up. No panic buying here.

Olympeagal · 01/03/2026 15:48

We definately have queues here although not helped by people posting on local FB group. Fuel is up 5p since yesterday.

Ive calmed down today and not watched the news but also had to turn the radio off as hourly news updates.

i was at our local petrol station this morning and the guy serving us was telling everyone to fill their tanks as there’ll be no petrol by the end of the week and that it will rocket upto £2 per litre. Not sure how much truth was in this!

I don’t think I’d be relying on the predictions of a random guy serving in a petrol station, unless of course he has a full and expert understanding of crude oil pricing predictions and currency movements for example. I suspect he’s relying more on the scare stories run last week by media outlets such as the Mirror and Daily Express though.

Panic buying fuel just means you might save a few pounds right now. You can only buy a tank; it’s not like people can buy loads now and store it at home for the future.

Fuel prices here haven’t moved since Friday. I’ve just driven past my usual petrol station and noticed the price hasn’t moved, and there are no queues whatsoever.

You’ve filled your car up… ok, so how long will that see you through?!

😂 exactly!
I’ve also filled my car up so I’m also prepping for WW3 apparently 🤔

Growlybear83 · 01/03/2026 16:07

I got stuck in a traffic jam when I drove home just now caused by all the people queuing to get into our local petrol station, blocking the road in both directions 🙄🙄🙄

Rituelec · 01/03/2026 16:07

Everyone should have enough stockpile for 3 weeks as per government and council guidelines (UK standard) but I havent done anything else, because I dont think any of it can help me.

Worst thing is people without bottled water and provisions clogging up phone lines etc

Should I be doing more?

YES! Of course you bloody should! What are you waiting for? You need to:

  • Construct your bomb shelter
  • Stock pile the pasta, tinned goods and toilet roll (remember the procedure in Tescos March/April 2020?)
  • Black-out all your windows WWII style
  • Gas masks at the ready!
  • Pray

You've forgotten about getting the all-important mattress ready to go over the door to the cupboard under the stairs where we were all told to hide in the event of a nuclear attack in the 1970s. 😆😆

I remember projected 'fuel crises' in 2005, and 2007 where there were panicked queues outside petrol stations, the army given priority for petrol in preparation for fuel rationing and media hysteria around ambulances not being able to get petrol so we'd all possibly diiiiiieee.

SM not a huge thing then as it is now but MN hosted doom-mongering threads about how the UK was going to come to a standstill.

It was fine. Nothing significant happened other than some people buying too much petrol.

Reminds me of let them eat cake. Don't they clog the drains as well.

if toilet paper is limited then they could always have a separate bin like the hospitals have for the wipes etc

That’s the bugger. I can still picture the packaging. <shudder>

The late Queen Mother carried on using it. Kept in a brown wooden box.

I couldn't get TP for a week or so at the beginning of 1st covid lockdown. Used kitchen roll instead and put it in the bin.

It was a minor inconvenience.

After that it wasn't a problem because the panic-buyers and stockpilers realised toilet paper was now again available in the shops and their stock pile wasn't making them rich in pandemic currency.

No, you have to take the door off its hinges and put it at 45 degrees to the wall, pile up crap against it, sheltering behind.

You need to re-watch those all important protect and survive films!!

Oh dear. I've failed on an epic scale. Not sure I've got enough for three days for most things. I have got plenty of tea bags and breakfast cereal. Shame I've only got enough milk for a couple of mugs of tea. I'll have to see what my click and collect order produces tomorrow.

🤣🤣 but surely you have to put the mattress over the door? I remember the protect and survive films, narrated by Mr Cholmondley-Warner, very well, and how surreal they were.

Baital · 01/03/2026 18:16

We can live on rice, after a slight on line buying hiccup a few months ago. Not to mention DD's sudden switch from tuna salad obsession to repulsion leaving a leaning tower of tuna tins.

Plus a camping stove and fuel.

Newspaper for toilet paper, as per DMs childhood in outdoor privies.

But if the WiFi goes down I am worried about DDs mental world order being completely overturned.

IwishIcouldconfess · 01/03/2026 18:17

I do wonder how people like you get through life

UpAndDownAllTheTime · 01/03/2026 18:45

I reckon we have enough food for three days.

But it will mean eating that frozen sweetcorn I regretted buying, some slightly rubbery french beans, and a lot of dried herbs.

Does that include stray peas in the bottom of the freezer?
