I’m referring to the current shit-show in the Middle East.

Wars have always been a thing but this time we’re being personally affected and I am so angry.

My aunt who lives in New Zealand is dying. Me and my dad were on our way to visit her. Flying from Manchester, one night in the middle-East and then off to New Zealand. Due to the current situation in the middle-east, our Qatar Airways got turned back and grounded in Manchester. We’ve gone home. We can’t find any alternative way to get to New Zealnd currently, without spending £££££££ (which we don’t have) on going via Singapore/China

Aunt is on her deathbed and taking her last breathes. It has come on unexpectedly, we thought she had 6 months and she was doing well on a drug trial. She suddenly had a huge stroke. Her kids are stuck in London and their flight was also turned back, they are desperately trying to scrape money together to go via Singapore or China but it’s looking impossible that anyone will get there in time.

AIBU to wish these old fucking bastards in charge would just meet up and beat each other the death, and leave us all to live in peace?

absolutely heartbroken

I'm so sorry, how heartbreaking and utterly enraging for you all.

Plenty of current world leaders (and to be honest, a fair chunk of the world population) dehumanise people. If it isn't someone they know and care about, then they're little more than a statistic. And this is where it leads us - and worse.

Her kids are in bits. Her only wish for her death was that her kids be there. We thought she had months and they are both getting established in careers in London so she said she wanted them to only come once she got very poorly. She is too unwell to talk but I know she’ll be lying there waiting for them.

she hasn’t started agonal breathing yet so if the fights hadn’t been grounded they had a decent chance of getting there in time, her hospice felt they had a good chance. But if it gets delayed by a day…2 days etc it’s a different story.

I just wish they could fight each other directly, put them in a boxing ring.

I’m just sounding off my frustrations on here. Just had a call from the nurse in her hospice that they think less than 24 hours. For fucks sake.

We would’ve had a few hours with her and now she’s going to die on her own

I'm sorry to hear things are so stressful. Surely travel insurance or the airlines should be arranging alternative travel or at least covering some costs? Is there no way they can help? What have Qatar airlines said? If there is a refund coming can you put new flights on a credit card for a few days while that's coming in?

All the customer services lines etc are snowed under unfortunately and there airport help desks were chaos with people shouting. There’s been talk of going via Singapore but unlikely to get there in time now.

According to this Qatar are refunding or moving flights. I'd contact them for a refund and use credit cards to get new flights!

EsperTillus · 28/02/2026 15:56

My poor dad hasn’t flown in 30 years and had done a “Fear of Flying” course to prepare him for this. I think this will send him right back to square one

What about travel insurance? If you can't get hold of Qatar they might be able to help.

I'm sorry OP, this is an awful experience for your family.

I'm absolutely sick of these violent, odious men playing fast and loose with our lives. Liberating the Iranian people my foot. As a group men cause so much harm. Yes, I have some lovely men in my life, but overall as a group, their violent, warmongering and abusive behaviours cuts across nationality, race, religion, income, age and any/every other category you can think of. I too wish they'd just fuck off and leave the rest of us to live in peace.

I have experience with getting very close family back to our dying parent from Australia and know how stressful it is even without a war.

Thinking of you all. Flowers

We knew she was terminally ill but we thought she had a few months left of being well. It’s all been so sudden.

My dad had been terrified to fly but had really wanted to go and see her, a few weeks ago we paid for him to do the EasyJet Fearfless Flyers course to get him ready to fly and they were absolutely fabulous and really helped him.

We were going this morning as a matter of emergency and booked it all last minute. when they announced the plane was being turned back this morning he went into a complete panic attack and needed medical attention. We can still go to New Zealand via London-Perth and then New Zealand I think but he’s been completely put off, he’s terrified now.

her children are going but are now unlikely to get there in time. Had the original flight not been cancelled they likely would’ve made it

Yes, there is no track record of bombs alone bringing down a leader. Is this really likely to get rid of the Ayatollah?

I totally agree @EsperTillus and have thought this in the past too. War mongering ass holes - wish they could just slog it out in a field somewhere.

im so so sorry for your situation. It's heartbreaking x x

that would be pointless because then you would have other leaders taking their place etc

BackinRed101 · 28/02/2026 19:07

that said all the best op @EsperTillus

I'm currently abroad. Watching this on US news channels it's practically being presented as a humanitarian mission to 'help' the Iranian people and they should rise up and replace the now dead leader.

I mean, we all know how this is likely to end. Seriously, they make me want to vomit.

nomas · 28/02/2026 21:16

Yep and Netanyahu spouting his usual shit. He can fuck off and all.

Really sorry OP, hope you and her kids manage to get there Flowers
