Is this the oldest tub of sudocrem?

Clearing out my mums house as she’s moving and weve found a massive tub of sudocrem. Expiry date is jul 1991 🤣 it’s still got a tiny scrape in it. Given I was born in July 91 and she said she used that tub for all 4 of us it’s a miracle it wasn’t used up entirely.

We also found some birds eye custard in my Nanas cupboard when she died that was exp 1970 so that probably wins! Tell me what the best expiry date you’ve found :)

I wonder how the company that makes Sudocrem can ever make a profit given that one pot seems to last pretty much forever. I can't rival your 1991 version but my 16 year old pot is still going strong. I'm not sure what the purpose of the expiry date is as it still seems as good as new.

AndrewFormallyKnownAsPrince · 28/02/2026 00:59

I know! It just doesn’t ever run out 🤣

I thought my 2008 tub was going some, also a 2010 exp on Vicks.

MIL - vanilla essence exp 1973. Thankfully she never made me cake. Survived 4 house moves.

DH - 'inherited' his Granny's emergency power cut candles, exp never but box looks like 1950's! She was born in 1909.....

About 10 years ago DM made a Christmas pud that did taste a bit off. She admitted that the suet had come out of my GM’s kitchen. GM died in 1990. When we pulled the box out of the bin, the price was in schillings.

I’ll see your 2010 Vicks and raise you a half full tub of Vasoline from 1998 that is still sitting proudly in my Mum’s kitchen “medicine” cupboard, alongside a box of Elastoplasts empty but for 3 of the tiny round ones that nobody ever uses, a foil strip containing a singular Rennie with the cover peeled back and looking suspiciously pre-sucked, and a respectable sewing “kit”, comprising of one random white pearlised button that matches nothing we own, a bent and very blunt bodkin and a bobbin full of thread in everyone’s obvious colour of choice……navy blue!

TurnipsAndParsnips · 28/02/2026 06:43

My Mum had Birds custard sachets with no date on them. We estimated that they were from the 70s. We also found a jar of home made soup pasta and some honey that was completely black. Both from a great aunt in Hungary who died in 1978. When we found something from the 90s it felt quite recent!

Having thought about it, I dont think I have ever come to the bottom of a tub of sudocrem. It literally goes on forever.

Thats blown my mind a bit 😆

What about Colman’s dried mustard powder? Who has actually finished a tin?

I had to buy a second tin about 12 years ago as the other tin fell out from the cupboard. Knocking lid off and a cloud of yellow. It went everywhere.

I have a giant catering size tin of this which I inherited from my parents, they had had it some time, and my dad died in 2012. It's still over half- full, I shall have to decide who to bequeath it to when I go! I do use it occasionally in sauces.

Wow. I'm unmoved by stuff that happened thousands of years ago but this brings tears to my eyes.

In a similar vein, I was broken up with a guy in my late teens. I was very shocked and upset and remember staring at my mother's living room carpet.

This was 30 years ago.

Mum gave it to me to put in the spare room.
Bumped into ex a few years ago. Chatted. He asked for my number, saw no harm giving it to him as well over it now.
He calls, asks me out for a drink. Says how he regrets the past.
I politely say no. No malice intended. Just life's moved on.

I look down musing and see that I answered the call in the spare room looking at my mother's (now well worn) carpet.

I suspect it’s similar to Vaseline in that no one ever actually finishes a tub. They just lose them and rebuy!

PersimmonsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 28/02/2026 08:04

I cleared out my mum's bathroom cabinet last year. Codeine from the 1970s and something she had brought back from living abroad when first married in the early 1960s!

Her freezer had food items from 1981. They didn't move to that house until 1983, so things must have moved with them.

We are currently dealing with her larder. I think the oldest I have found so far is 1991, but there are shelves I have not even started on yet. I suspect I will find older. Have had to deal with several exploded tins. She insists I separate and dispose of the food waste and recycling according to her council rules. 30 year old lemon curd smells like something unholy.

JumpingPumpkin · 28/02/2026 08:06

I've got a still-in-use small tub of Vicks that expired in May 97. I'm wondering how many more years it will last, it must be hard to make a profit with such sparingly used products.

LarrySherbert · 28/02/2026 09:23

When we cleared out my nans bungalow about 20 years ago she had something that had been got on the ration. I just can't remember exactly what it was.

She also had a bottle of Dual floor polish with the price in shillings and things with price stickers from supermarkets long gone, like Liptons and the International.

thinkingofachange · 28/02/2026 09:41

we finish sudocreme and Vaseline here and there’s no babies, we literally had a knee scrape yesterday tho it’s not unusual. still using OOD Vicks and mustard 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have a giant tin, that I bought 5 years ago. It will need replaced very soon. But I always add a spoonful to Mac and cheese.

Whenindoubthugitout · 28/02/2026 09:45

My sudocrem was purchased in 1998, and is still going, it even survived the carpet and mirror disaster of 2000. (However the child who was responsible for said disaster almost didn’t make it 😂😂😂😂)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/02/2026 09:51

When we were clearing dh’s old aunt’s flat, we found lots of tinned food, much of which was around 10 years out of date! But I took several that weren’t either blown or rusty home and used them - they were fine. But one did remind me of why I’ve never bought tinned potatoes! Maybe OK in a dire emergency, but….

I always have some - a little goes in my ‘extremely moreish’ recipe for cheese straws. I’ve also taken some to a BiL’s house in France (huge place where we take turns cooking for sometimes 18 plus) and it goes in any cheese sauce.

LLJETO · 28/02/2026 10:02

I go through Vicks like no one’s business!😂 I use it most nights and have even bought one of the ‘posh’ swivel dispenser ones. I’ve never been a fan of Sudocrem - my mum swore by it for everything but I remember it stinging. I do have a tub of it in the house somewhere though, just in case.

I must also applaud you OP for spelling Sudocrem correctly. It’s one of those things that make my eyes twitch when I see it spelled Sudocrem or Sudocream. (I don’t know why, it just does).

LLJETO · 28/02/2026 10:08

Oops, need to check my own spelling! Should have said when it’s spelled ‘Sudocreme’ or ‘Sudocream’.

It’s a right of passage. My daughter once covered most of her bedroom, and herself, with a giant tub. There was still half left though! 😂
