Is this the oldest tub of sudocrem?

Clearing out my mums house as she’s moving and weve found a massive tub of sudocrem. Expiry date is jul 1991 🤣 it’s still got a tiny scrape in it. Given I was born in July 91 and she said she used that tub for all 4 of us it’s a miracle it wasn’t used up entirely.

We also found some birds eye custard in my Nanas cupboard when she died that was exp 1970 so that probably wins! Tell me what the best expiry date you’ve found :)

My dad had a tin of colmans powdered mustard that he used right up until 2020. The tin was from the queens coronation!!!

We found it in my grandmas house when she died in the 90s. My dad reckoned it was the best mustard ever!

We also have "eating peas" and "injury peas". They're in separate freezer drawers.

spiderlight · 01/03/2026 23:02

I still have a tub of Sudocrem that was in my parents' cupboard in the early 90s. My dad in particular used it for everything - genuinely, he had meningococcal meningitis when he was 84, spent ten days ventilated on ITU, and his first words to me after regaining consciousness were 'I'm all right. I'm all right. Could you bring some Sudocrem in tomorrow though, please?' 😂 I ended up with it when he moved into a nursing home a year or so later. It did all my DS's scrapes and grazes - he's now nearly 19 - and there's still a good third of it left. I swear it regenerates.

My sudocrem was purchased in 1998, and is still going, it even survived the carpet and mirror disaster of 2000. (However the child who was responsible for said disaster almost didn’t make it 😂😂😂😂)

I bought a huge tub when dd was born in may 1997

It's gone through god knows how many kids (I dont have unlimited dc,I mean friends dc too!) god knows how many grazed knees/grazed elbows/small cuts/sweat rashes (me) and the disaster of 2000 when she and her brother got hold of it while id gone for a pee and coated both themselves,my brand new sofa (id had it less than 2 hours),the tv/carpet/my shoes and their then newborn brother and the bouncy chair he was laid in

I've only just binned it as it seemed to smell funny

In November 2023, I found a tub of breadcrumbs in my cupboard which were best before January 1994! I had cleared out my cupboards numerous times, but obviously decided to keep the breadcrumbs for some reason (I have thrown them out now). I sent a photo of them to DS as he wasn't born until 1995, so they were older than him!

My parents have a tub of salt purchased in the early 80s as my gran liked salt in her gravy when she visited...she's been dead now 20 years (died in her 90s after never a day of sickness) and they still got the tub. It has 10p on it. I personally get through salt quicker but I store it in my first aid cupboard. I never used it in food about from making salt dough with my daughter. Salt honestly is amazing at stopping infections. I miss the Germaine tins too...wish they bought them back.

How do you use salt to stop infections?

When we cleared out my nans bungalow about 20 years ago she had something that had been got on the ration. I just can't remember exactly what it was.

She also had a bottle of Dual floor polish with the price in shillings and things with price stickers from supermarkets long gone, like Liptons and the International.

Was it snoek?

randomchap · 01/03/2026 23:18

When I first moved in with my late wife I noticed she had loads of jars of out of date spices. Some years out of date. So I noted down all the ones that needed replacing and bought them all fresh as a surprise.

She'd been shopping at the local market for loose spices and storing them in old jars.

Felt like such a fool

So not all old jars are full of out of date stuff

TinselAngel · 01/03/2026 23:18

DD recently had an infected finger which she claimed was entirely due to me giving her 13 year old Savlon to put on it when it was just sore.

No, I have a feeling it was something like a syrup of some kind, or possibly cod liver oil? Probably post war but still!

Buggabootwo · 02/03/2026 07:59

My sudocreme is a mere whippersnapper at 2008. But I am pretty confident that DS will be having this conversation in about 2060 when he clears out my house. Due to a slight misread on the Ocado website, I have recently acquired a 500ml bottle of Tabasco! It’s bloody massive and is going to last several generations.

full bottle of baby oil from a supermarket that closed in 1986 😂

Thought my big tub from 2008 was old! And it's still half full! It's good stuff!
When we cleared my grans house after she went into a nursing home, back in the late 90s, we found a box of tins of marrowfat peas (who even likes those?! 🤢) dated 1955! She probably expected another war, bless her. She'd lived through two by that point!

I do occasionally like marrowfat peas with my steak pie and mash. Reminds me of Sunday tea with my grandparents. We would then have a fruit strudel or chocolate gateaux if it was someone’s birthday.

I'm guessing salt water mouthwashes that do if have toothache

Auburngal · 04/03/2026 06:44

Another one - Oxo and stock cubes. I have a jar full of them of different types and the supermarket ones are just wrapped in silver so wrote a letter - B for beef, V for vegetable etc.

They have no date on the individual cubes and can’t remember the last time I bought a box. I bought some Knorr cubes as were discontinued or new stock (pun) was a victim of shrinkflation around 2018.

Latenightreader · 04/03/2026 06:52

I don't drink coffee and discovered my jar of instant had gone grey and...odd so asked my mother if she had any I could borrow. She offered me a far of sachets she had acquired from hotels. One of them was labelled 'made in West Germany'.

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 05/03/2026 07:26

When my Nana died in 2003 her pantry was an absolute history lesson… stuff that predated WW2 and had moved house with them several times, some of it older than my Dad (her son). We should have offered some of it to The Imperial War Museum. They say that tinned food doesn’t go off… not so, as we found when we opened a tin of some of kind of meat pudding (opened it for science) which we found in there. As the long-dead animal (badger?) hit the air, I swear that you could see the smell. No wonder we won two world wars if that’s what our people were used to surviving on.

We also found a “fancy” metal tin of “pre cut plastic strip band aids” that her sister had sent over from the USA in the 1950s… apparently Elastoplast on a roll was all anybody had in the UK back then, so her sister had sent this box over to demonstrate that she was now living in the future (in New Jersey). My parents still have the tin, this isn’t theirs, but it is the same one. They now keep own-brand Sainsbury’s plasters in it. Little did Auntie Joanie know when she posted that box across the Atlantic during the tenure of the 33rd US president that it would still be going strong well into the tenure of the 47th!

Can I add ZamBuk to the party?
My mother always had a tiny little green pot in the house and bought me one to put the ointment on my ears when I had them pierced in 1971.
I have replaced it once and think it was only produced in Australia by then?
It’s very eucalyptus-y and was used on my three kids for any kind of skin issue - we never had antiseptic creams.
My daughter is currently looking for her own supply 😂
PS I also have an unopened Coleman’s mustard powder coronation tin - in the original paper bag, and recently removed an ancient tin of Spam from my son’s bedroom as it was an explosion risk. He was very cross.

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 08/03/2026 08:28

Never heard of it @JustMeAndTheFish(although I like the sound of the smell alone). Anyway, look no further- two for £7 on Amazon Prime here.

waterhorse123 · 08/03/2026 08:32

Back in the 1970s my husband's family (mum I suppose) opened a tin of crab from WW2 and it was fine. They mixed it with mayonaise and had it in a sandwich. And he's still alive. Although I guess back then it was only 30 something years old.

Astra53 · 08/03/2026 08:47

I have a Vick's nasal inhaler from circa 1974 and it's still going strong! I just can't part with it as it reminds me of a lovely family holiday.

My Mum had Birds custard sachets with no date on them. We estimated that they were from the 70s. We also found a jar of home made soup pasta and some honey that was completely black. Both from a great aunt in Hungary who died in 1978. When we found something from the 90s it felt quite recent!

Honey is the exception ..never goes off. Has been found in Pharaohs tombs!

changedusername190 · 08/03/2026 13:48

I’ve just realised I’ve still got my nans smelling salts. She died ten years ago and always had them in her handbag so must be at least seventy years old. They're still just as potent.
