Stuck in roles with no line management experience

Had anyone else had this issue? I've been in three managerial positions, each for a couple of years each, current 2.5 years, moved each time for a pay rise (7k then another 6k), with the promise each time of expansion and line management experience, then it never comes. Every interview hurdle for jobs that require line management experience is my lack of, and the job goes to someone who fills that box. Always 'you were out second best but you just don't have that lm experience we need and someone else does'.

How can I build enough experience without actually line managing anyone? It's so frustrating.

What were your two previous positions? Did you have any operational oversight at all? Can you think about which aspects could be considered consistent with line management duties?

Do you mentor and support staff? Could you ask to take on line management duties unofficially? Could you blag it?

I got line management type experience by running and delivering projects (with others - even if there isn’t a lead, you can obtain experience), taking the lead on working groups, mentoring junior colleagues, being responsible for graduates, and deputising for management as hoc if they were away or asking for specific items I would be responsible for.

if this doesn’t work in your organisation ask your manager how you can get experience
