Is this unreasonable?

The Greens desperation is doing serious damage to their brand.

Don’t forget Cornish…

Work9to5 · 25/02/2026 18:47

Define speaking "English" etc. Having heard some who are supposed to be native English speakers in the media lately it's quite a wide variation 🙄

Fearlesssloth · 25/02/2026 18:48

Why do you think this? I don’t know much about the Green’s campaign but I do believe everyone who lives in this country (and is therefore affected by its government) has a right to vote. If your POV is people who can’t speak English can’t educate themselves about who to vote for because they don’t understand the language then there’s plenty of ways around that - most likely have children or other family members who speak English who can translate for them and give them information. I don’t think that is your POV though, I think it’s just pure racism. Which is sad. Everyone who is a resident of a country has the right to vote for the government of that country.

JohnBullshit · 25/02/2026 18:48

What exactly are you on about?
My problem is that far too many people vote without even a rudimentary understanding of how our political system works. That's far more prevalent than being unable to speak any of our national languages, and leaves people vulnerable to unscrupulous grifters.

WATCH: Gorton & Denton Green Candidate Produces Video Entirely in Urdu

No, but I do think anyone who immigrates and lives here and does not already speak passable English should be provided with English lessons and required to pass a basic English language test after 6 months - Denmark requires this, and it's so sensible and helps with integration.

And yes, I have lived abroad and yes, I learned the language. It's absurdly alienating to be unable to communicate in the native language of the country you have moved to.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2026 18:57

I woke up this morning and decided to join a parenting site just to make a first post to moan about multiculturalism?
Perfectly natural - it happens all the time nowadays.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

StrawberriesandBrylcream · 25/02/2026 18:57

Why is this an issue for you? If someone lives here and is eligible to vote, what's the problem with producing campaign content in any language they might more readily engage with? I have a much bigger problem with inaccuracies and dishonesty in campaign content than what language its available in.

ScullyD · 25/02/2026 18:58

Reform voter alert, ding ding ding

UpAndDownAllTheTime · 25/02/2026 18:58

There are plenty of fuckwit english speakers around.

Most of the awful people you want to disenfranchise, who don't speak english, are women. It's not that the Greens should not be speaking to them, it's that every party should be speaking to them.

Piggywaspushed · 25/02/2026 18:58

I'm confused. This seems extremely on brand for the Greens and not damaging at all . I can't see what damage it does in the eyes of anyone who is inclined to share their values.

FaceEatingLeopard · 25/02/2026 18:58

You really don't have to look too far or too hard to find a large percentage of so-called native English speakers to understand that it is not just those pesky forriners who can't speak or understand the language.

I suppose the OP is yet another bloody Reform shill. So obvious.

Don't be daft. Of course you should learn the language of the country that you've chosen to live in.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/02/2026 19:00

I don't think racists and bigots should vote, but we live in a democracy.

There is nothing to say the lucky bilingual people accessing this material don't speak English. They may be more fluent in their mother tongues.

Election materials, NHS leaflets, council publications, national questionnaires, the census - have all been produced in community languages for decades now. This seems to have only become a talking point since about 2021. Funny that.

Piggywaspushed · 25/02/2026 19:04

What about English speakers who have low levels of literacy and can barely read or write English? Are they allowed to vote? Or would you like to suggest intelligence tests, too, while you're at it.

JohnBullshit · 25/02/2026 19:04

Why is this troubling you? It's not a new thing, nor is it exclusive to the Green Party.

FreshInks · 25/02/2026 19:08

I don’t agree with the OP. But immediately jumping to accusations of racism or hurling insults is exactly the kind of reaction that fuels Reform’s rise in popularity. If people want to challenge their appeal, the only effective way to do it is through calm, constructive engagement. Shutting conversations down with insults just pushes more people in their direction, you may as well be campaigning for them.
