Dirty Business

Just watched it.

Raw sewage onto our beaches and into rivers.

A child died. That poor child, an awful death.
Children and adults ill.
Suicide
Lies
Profits
Misrepresentation of facts.
Overpaid executives.

Throughly disgusting. Executives that nake these decisions should be prosecuted. Shameful. How do they live with themselves profiteering like that.

On a local level Thames Water have been discharging raw sewerage into the River Roding (London 3rd largest river) almost non stop since last year. The water quality is horrific. Even this week it’s still happening.

Theolittle · 13/03/2026 19:59

I have signed.

Something needs to change.

i can’t see that the govt can afford to nationalise but it would be good to let govt know how important it is and get them to discuss it

I think we're all going to need to pay more tax if we want to keep state pensions and free healthcare! It's all going to get much worse as the ratio of pensioners to workers increases!

But still good if people sign the petition https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/757426

Petition: Nationalise water companies to make water a non profit publicly owned asset

To make water a non profit making national asset that ensures we have a secure water infrastructure that ensures our water security for future generations.

From what I can see, the private sector is fleecing the tax payers and customers. Money is not reinvested but shared out among investors.

And it’s not just water… it’s also care homes and children’s homes. NHS. Often foreign investors. I don’t know if we can ever make this right again.

The slide from state owned to owned by foreign investors started with Margaret Thatchers sell off. Gradually the lots of smaller investors become less and less and gradually foreign companies took control. Now its all about profit which goes elsewhere.

Agree @Ihatetomatoes .

I remember the privatisation campaigns back then… everyone being urged to buy shares in British Gas etc. (the ‘tell Sid’ campaign). Sold as being ‘for the people’ - as was selling off housing stock. Short term individual gain. Smoke and mirrors.

Of course it is. This is the number one reason why ‘Britain has no money’ in my book. Of course Britain has money: for any northerners from poor backgrounds you need to go take a walk round a rich region because it is a total lie.

Add SEND to your list, special schools are mainly private now. Extortionate Fees get paid by the council direct to a special schools, a fraction of which goes to the underpaid staff and minimal facilities, the rest gets siphoned off. Ditto transport.

Wherever private companies are involved they are doing so for profit. I believe by law private companies HAVE to make profit. We pay for that profit.

There is also the current problem of taxpayers having to pay for the energy costs of businesses as well, I remember a campaign against that a couple of years ago but it went quiet. That usually means someone’s been paid off to keep the people quiet. Our media is fucked too.

Information and communications is usually a good place to start spreading lies, that’s why it was targeted back in the 80s.

We are near Lake Windermere and are horrified at the pollution. A major tourist hot spot giving an income to the local economy, in a well known and much loved National Park. They have no shame and the privatisation of essential services has damaged this country beyond repair. In addition I feel this attitude has filtered down in that in so many companies, shareholders are the customer and we are just an annoying adjunct. Investors will make money from anything and everything and do not care of the damage they do and yet ..... anyone who has a pension plan and investments is culpable too.

Overitallnow · 18/03/2026 09:24

It's even more shocking than I imagined. I remember swimming as a child in the sea at Frinton in the 1970s and being very ill for weeks afterwards and nearly hospitalised. It's been going on for years.

Yes short term gain. Mrs Thatcher in the then Tory party sold off so much. Water, gas, rail, electricity, telecommunications. Others? Cannot remember. A massive sell off. Most of those organisations now charges huge amounts for their services whilst making huge profits for shareholders and foreign owners.

Tell 'Sid' how the sell off went .......

It went well for the baby boomer generation.

Eventually somebody might look at America now, with its current presidential team and plan to cancel vaccinations for the plebs, and realise just where this culture of greed and power games for the rich take us. Is America going to overturn its government, as it keeps saying other countries should? How?

But I’ve been telling people that for 20-odd years now.

The election doorstepping has started and I’m making sure I talk about this issue.

Nearly 300,000 sewage ‘spills’ in 2025.

The government have responded to the petition. Full text here:

”The Government recognises the strength of public concern about the performance of water companies, including pollution incidents, infrastructure failures, and the need for stronger environmental protection. We are clear that standards must improve and that water companies must be held fully to account.
Some campaigners have called for nationalisation of the water industry or a move to not for profit public ownership. However, the Government does not believe that nationalisation is the answer. The reality is that it would take many years to unpick the current ownership model, would be extremely complex, and would likely result in prolonged legal challenges, with years spent in the courts rather than fixing the problems people rightly care about.
During that period, billions of pounds of vital private investment needed to repair leaking pipes, upgrade infrastructure, and improve environmental performance would be put at risk or delayed. Nationalisation would also create a significant hole in the public finances, diverting funding away from key public priorities such as hospitals and schools, without delivering faster or better outcomes for customers or the environment.
Independent analysis by the Independent Water Commission found no evidence that ownership models—whether public or private—determine performance. What matters is strong regulation, effective enforcement, and sustained investment. That is why the Government is focused on reforming how the sector is regulated, rather than pursuing disruptive and costly structural change.
This is why we are delivering the most far reaching overhaul of water regulation in a generation. Through the Water White Paper, we are strengthening the powers of regulators, introducing tougher oversight, enabling no notice inspections, and taking a prevention first approach to pollution. We are also increasing accountability by banning bonuses for senior executives when performance falls short, introducing swift and automatic penalties for pollution incidents, and creating new criminal sanctions for those who obstruct investigations. Nationalisation is not the answer—tougher regulation is—and we are giving regulators the teeth they need to act quickly and decisively.
The Water White Paper is also clear that where a water company proposes a transition to a different ownership model, such as a not for profit structure, the new regulator will assess whether this should go ahead and ensure that the interests of customers are properly protected and reflected in any decision.
The Government remains focused on ensuring water companies meet the high standards the public expects, invest in resilient infrastructure, protect bill payers, and restore the environment for future generations—delivering real improvements without the delay, disruption, and cost that nationalisation would bring.
