Dirty Business

Just watched it.

Raw sewage onto our beaches and into rivers.

A child died. That poor child, an awful death.
Children and adults ill.
Suicide
Lies
Profits
Misrepresentation of facts.
Overpaid executives.

Throughly disgusting. Executives that nake these decisions should be prosecuted. Shameful. How do they live with themselves profiteering like that.

If anyone is local to Thanet, and feels strongly about this, may wish to turn up to support Julie Wassmer on 19th March at Thanet County Court, Margate.

Darker · 26/02/2026 16:20

Agree. This should be a key issue for political parties.

Yes. I’m with Thanes Water and they’re a disgrace. Nothing I can do - I’m stuck with them. 🤷‍♀️

Signed both!

Why aren’t people (I don’t mean MN posters on this thread or the telly addicts thread) up in arms about this?
Watched all 3 episodes this week, I’m rewatching, it feels like it can’t be real but it is.

Good question, I don’t understand why there isn’t more anger.

Perhaps it’s too early to gain momentum?

somuchbedding · 26/02/2026 21:49

I wonder if this programme influenced the Gorton and Denton by-election? The Greens did better than they have ever done.

MrsMitford3 · 27/02/2026 08:12

I don't think the Greens were campaigning much about the water

Darker · 27/02/2026 08:15

But the other parties don’t seem to care about these issues… anyway… it’s just a thought.

Darker · 27/02/2026 08:17

I’d put clean water and rivers above HS2 as a national priority.

I always wonder about the social stigma those water execs face (or don't face) in real life. Imagine finding yourself sat next to one at a dinner party. How are they not ostracised?

Darker · 27/02/2026 08:58

The salaries and bonuses were/are stratospheric, so they probably just thought it was worth it and that they were doing a good job.

… and the lies were normalised… think about the bit where they cut car travel and spun it as environmental protection. The top people would have had the patter to satisfy family and social circles.

They probably sit next to similar types of executives where money is more important than morals. I think lots are morally bankrupt and focus on money and 'success'.

They seem to have lost their way in the latest year's. Ten plus years ago they really focused on the environment.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/02/2026 11:46

I watched it with anger. The Environment Agency was as culpable as the water company. As bad as the Post office scandal. What would have happened if we hadn't had those 2 clever chaps, chasing the story for years..

Wherethecatgone · 27/02/2026 11:53

Upholstery · 25/02/2026 10:12

Isn't there some kind of campaign where people are refusing to pay a particular element of their water bills? On the basis that we're not receiving the service being billed for. We should all join in, it might make them take action if we hit them in the profits.

I'd like to not pay the part of the bill which goes to dividends for the overseas companies. Are there any figures on what percentage this has been over the years for different water companies?

Darker · 27/02/2026 11:56

MrsMitford3 · 27/02/2026 08:12

No they weren’t… but the C4 programme was only aired this week and there has been, for once, a lot of rage which is actually quite unusual for environmental issues.

whoTFismadelaine · 27/02/2026 11:57

I think the government should be taking the companies to court who have profiteered, going back decades, and sue them for negligence, environmental damage and endangering human life. Let's get Erin Brochevick on their asses! Starmer would rise in my estimation if he had the balls to do this - as a barrister he should be at the forefront of this kind of movement.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 27/02/2026 12:49

I’m incensed after watching this. I hope it prompts immediate action. I’m amazed that any raw sewage is allowed in rivers and seas - never mind the quantity that has been illegally dumped.
it’s hardly surprising when you sell off the water companies to foreign investors who care not a jot for the infrastructure of the water plants or the UK environment, and then we ask them to self regulate, what could possibly go wrong? 🤦‍♀️

YellowBirdSong · 27/02/2026 15:02

It’s fucking disgusting, a total disgrace. These people should be serving prison sentences !!!
