A couple of years ago I was singing 'It's oh so quiet' by Bjork to myself and when I got the 'shhhh, shhh' bit, my cat went into hyper focus then ran up to me, jumped into my lap and starting purring and buffing me!

Have done it several times since, same reaction.

Tonight I actually played the song and she immediately leapt across the sofa to get up close and personal with the Alexa 😂.

I appreciate this is a fairly batshit post but I would love to know if any other cats react the same way (or if they have other favourite songs or quirks).

Pic attached of the furry Bjork fan...😁

IsitaHatOrACat · 24/02/2026 21:29

Dear ancient cat is far too asleep for this tonight. Will try tomorrow 😁

Hyper focus from my Kiki but then crouched down like wtf love.

Middlemarch123 · 24/02/2026 21:32

Chairman Meow, our gorgeous Persian always heads to his throne, aka litter tray, when the into music to The Chase starts at 5p.m. Like clockwork. He then sits mournfully looking at his dish, waiting for the final music, when his dish is magically full of Sheba or Gourmet.
The two other cats appear from outdoors, at 6 p.m. They eat their dinner, go outside again, and come indoors when I go to bed at 10 p.m. All three are on my bed, dozing, but wake up for Dreamies at 11p.m. When I then listen to some George Michael, or doze off to a repeat of Gavin and Stacey. So yes, they respond to music and routine. Love cats x

I’ll try with my three tomorrow and report back! I’m expecting a range of reactions.

ReinsOfBucephalus · 24/02/2026 21:34

Mine just looked at me with concern as if to say “errr, you good?”

😂

I need to find a way to get a video of her doing it!

Mine ran off thinking I was hissing at her. She's a very timid cat.
I feel a bit mean now, she was just settling down! Whooops.

janietreemore · 24/02/2026 21:44

No response here I'm afraid OP, either to my rendition or the original artist's.
My cat Luna is only entranced by an Italian lullaby addressed to the moon, and sits gazing up in delight when anyone sings it.

razattack · 24/02/2026 21:55

OMG! Just sang the chorus at my cat who was sitting on the footstool and he ran over and jumped up to me 😻 Gonna try this when I need to get him in from the garden at night for bed (rather than shaking the dreamies). Thanks for the tip!

Frostynoman · 24/02/2026 21:55

Mine is still maintaining that they are asleep irrespective of the musical interlude…(they are not..)

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/02/2026 21:55

Not Bjork: but I used to own and live in a converted church with a lot of original features (which sounds like a brag but is absolutely relevant!) We had two Bengal boys, and one of their favourite things to do when we played Madonna’s Like a Prayer, was climb into the pulpit and then stand on the Bible-rest - and sing, at the tops of their voices, as Bengals do. They didn’t do it anywhere else in the house: not on the mezzanine balcony of equal height, not on the kitchen worktops, not on the tops of the bookcases which they also loved to climb. I wasn’t a cat person until I lived with Helmut and YoYo, but living with them, I grew to believe that cats understand shit.

I can’t find a pulpit photo, but here are my former boys playing chase me chase me in the churchyard.

Notashamed13 · 24/02/2026 21:58

Mine responds and without fail comes to me from ANYWHERE if I whistle the tune to "The Wombles" - has done since being a kitten and shes now 16 😁

MotherOfSixCats · 24/02/2026 22:05

One of my previous boys used to headbutt whatever was closest when you "ssshhh'd" at him, my other cats react in different ways - sometimes positive and sometimes very offended! Must be either "if love you" in cat language or "f off!"

thebabessavedme · 24/02/2026 22:05

Some years ago, for some obscure reason, I started meowing the the theme tune to midsummer murders (very easy, give it a try) my 2 old boys instantly joined in, they did it every single time, always fun when the family came round🤔😂

Left · 24/02/2026 22:06

Just tried with my senior girl and she swiftly left my lap and took refuge on the laundry pile on the landing. Not sure if it was the original or my singing that traumatised her. To be fair I do not have Bjork’s vocal range 😅

Interesting experiment though - I’ll see what other artists I can expose her to tomorrow, in the name of science.

Herecomesthehotflusher · 24/02/2026 22:09

Not a song, but if I make a loud sniffing noise, one of my cats gets really excited and boisterous (that’s a sentence I didn’t think I’d write today 😂)

Fgfgfg · 24/02/2026 22:10

As usual, Graham responds to nothing except the sound of food.

incywince · 24/02/2026 22:11

Mine just gave me the killer death stare. But she does that a lot to be honest. I frequently fail to love up to her expectations.

Meadowlands · 24/02/2026 22:19

My cat goes doolally when I whistle.

NewYearNewMee · 24/02/2026 22:22

Mine is sitting with his back to me, grooming, totally unperturbed 😂

SabrinaThwaite · 24/02/2026 22:23

Nope. Mine just opened one eye and gave me a glare. Not a Bjork fan.

I’ve always trained my cats to come to a whistle, makes getting them in for bedtime less stressful.
