I've not tried very often tbf, is there something I'm missing?

I started feeling unwell 4 weeks ago, just a standard cold. So I let it work through, but at the end was left with a nasty cough and completely blocked ears. Tried some home remedies, which didn't work, and then 2 weeks ago started feeling fluey, shivery achey etc. And my ears started leaking muck.

So clearly something infected, prob need antibiotics. I went to the chemist, who gave me a full list of questions, and then said they couldn't look at ear infections unless I was under 17. At the age of 49, I reckon she could have informed me of this before asking all the questions.

She advised me to go to the GP (next door) and ask for an urgent appointment. I knew it was going to be too late in the day for that, but went in to ask. They confirmed that I couldn't have an appointment, but looking at me thought I should be seen by out of hours, which I should phone after 6.15.

I phoned as requested, and after a triage I was told the Dr would phone back within 2 hours. They said it was likely I'd have to go to a location 30 miles away, which DH would have to take me to because although I drive ,I'm only insured on the work van for work purposes (yes this is ludicrous, but I've been quoted 4k minimum on the family car because I once ASKED whether I could do some deliveries in the car, and they decided to cancel my insurance!)

So we sat up till midnight waiting for the call, both of us had work in the morning so gave up then. I eventually got a call at 4.30 am, which of course I missed. So the following morning, I actually felt a little better, but the pain and itching in my ears was extreme. I attempted to phone the GP, the recorded message informed me I could hold, or make an appointment in person. The surgery is roughly on the way to work, so that seemed the better option. I went in, to be told that no I couldn't make an appointment in person, I should go and phone. I tried to phone from outside, where it said I was number 45 in the queue, but they could call me back.

They inevitably called me back when I was driving, and when I phoned again all appointments were gone. The following day I tried again. Work can in theory be a little flexible, they don't mind me picking up the parcels an hour late, but of course if I do so I need to work late. And of course the later I start, the further from my home town I'm likely to be at a time I might be offered an appointment. I've never had a day sick, and I accept it'll have to happen sometime, but I really can't afford to take a day off just to attempt to make an appointment, costing a day's wages and risking my job (self employed gig economy, they just give your round away). Again I missed the call back while driving.

So I googled the antibiotic ear drops I'd had a few years ago. I was surprised that I could buy them and pay 24 hour delivery. I purchased them, and nothing turned up. So I rang the chemist, who said there was a hold on my order because of a tech issue which hadn't confirmed my email. She sorted it out on the phone, and sent me an email so I could confirm details. It didn't arrive again. I phoned again to be told there was a note on my file that they were out of stock, would I accept a different brand? Yes, of course I will, why haven't you emailed/texted/called? What use is a note on a file I can't see?? I receive the eardrops 4 days late, my ears are agony...

The eardrops work a treat, after a week all itching/pain/discharge has gone. But I still can't hear, and there's quite a bit of swelling in my neck and jaw which is uncomfortable. I still think I should see a doctor. This should be easier now because it's not urgent? I can just book an advance appointment I can get to? No apparently not, I've got to do the 8.30 call back thing, and hope that a) they don't phone when I'm driving and b) they can offer a late enough appointment that I won't be miles away and can get to it.

I just don't understand how I'm supposed to make this work.

Whilst I agree that the current set up is an absolute shambles, beyond awful…
I do feel however that if you are well enough to go to work and likely are recovering from a ( probably) viral infection, you just need to ride this out and you probably don’t need to see a gp

You may be right, but for other reasons I would like to see a GP about my thyroid. But I have no idea how to get an appointment.
If I can't get time off when I'm unwell, I haven't got hope when I'm well enough to work.

Oh gosh, you need to get this sorted. Does your employer not pay sick pay? I feel for you, please contact the practice manager

I work for evri. They call us self employed, even though we have to work to all their conditions as an employee.

So you know how to get an appointment at your GP surgery, you just dislike having to do it because it won’t be perfectly convenient.

It’s not true @Simonjt OP needed to go to work, she could wait 1 hour but 1 hour wouldn’t cut it as she was 45th in the queue. Our surgery has this call back system for enquires and at some points I called them before 11 am and got call back at 3 pm. Who could wait so much?
I could as I was at home anyway but when DH was trying to make an appointment similar to OP’s experience he twice missed phone calls as he was at the meetings. Now luckily we have e consult and it’s a different story.

I would never have tried to see a GP for the initial cold. It was when I had clear symptoms of an infection that I tried to do this.

By the way @SEmyarse you won’t be able to make an appointment for hearing AND for thyroid. They are supposed to be 2 separate appointments ☹️
don't know how to make any of them though, the system is complete shambles.

Soozikinzii · 23/02/2026 19:30

Call 111 they can get you an appointment at nearest drop in place .

I'd whistleblow on this - you have to meet certain standards to be SE, they're breaking the law if you don't actually meet the requirements. Contact HMRC, it will trigger an investigation

It won't help with a doctors appointment but why should you be penalised for being SE when you're not? People generally choose to be SE for the benefits but you're not seeing these benefits if you're working as an employee! God, I hate Evri even more now!

I sort of knew that. Was intending to make the appointment on the premise of being generally run down and exhausted, hence struggling with recent virus, and suspecting that it may have an underlying cause relating to the thyroid.

I'm aware I'm being a bit pushy, but tbh previous issues have all been pushed into the background because I knew it'd be a nightmare getting time off work. I've not had a day off in 24 years, I'm never properly ill. I am however persistently drained , and have some odd symptoms that I'd like to discuss.

It's very annoying that I pay tax for a service that I can't use, but have many friends on benefits who use it for minor issues all the time.

OP, could your husband make the 8am call and request the appointment for you? He could just tell the receptionist that you’ve lost your hearing.

You really need to be seen. Hearing doesn’t always come back if you leave it too long.

Haha, this'll be a tangent and a half if I get going!
7 years ago 194 couriers (including myself) took Hermes (as was) to tribunal, and won, proving that we're not self employed. We were awarded holiday and pension rights. Evri then renamed themselves and declared everyone to be self employed plus, as if that means anything. The GMB union got involved, and it did improve for a while, but gradually everything has been eroded and we seem to be back to the start, with the union pocketing our contributions, under the guise of protecting us, but don't actually DO anything. I'm still unclear why it is so corrupt. If anyone leaves the union they are immediately given an enormous rate cut.
Just before Xmas some couriers tried to do an expose with Panorama, but they were told they could only criticise the company, not the union, so it was limited.

This might well be the plan of action BUT there's still a really good chance that he'll be offered a time that I just can't make. He won't know where I'm likely to be, apart from after about 4ish, when I should be close enough to divert and go back out.
It still seems absurd that I can't just make an advance appointment so I can plan round it. Although I live in a town, I deliver in the wilds, it's very awkward to work around.

Kinda feels like I'm underwater at the swimming pool, just muffled distant noises

Please call either your drs out of hrs number or 111 & tell them you have lost your hearing or better still get hubby to call.

you could lose your hearing permanently, usually they need to give you steroids pretty quickly. Don’t keep leaving it

agree about drs being a nightmare, 6 weeks is the wait for a routine appointment round here & then it is never with an actual dr. Dr appointments are like gold dust

redboxerclub · 23/02/2026 20:06

I had this last year OP and it feel so punitive to people who work. It was an awful and I ended up sobbing a a sobbing and sobbing and the GP was so awful to me that after the call he realised he misjudged and the practise manager called me to discuss. I’d called for an appointment at 5.30 thinking I’d get straight through and there woould be no queue. After a bit of chat she said she would ask the urgent care team what I could do. 2 minutes late cue a GP calling me. I was so happy, so polite and kind and thankful ans all h did was yell at me about what an awful person I was. I was awful. The manager rang me presumable to stave off a complaint. It is a an absolute shit show.

Call 111 say there are no appointments left. They will help you.

I wish all the luck in the world navigating this hell.

I was so upset I had to have the next day of work. Plus I was really sick and just trying to survive with work and sleep! I cracked .

Auroraloves · 23/02/2026 17:44

Do you have an online account with this GP. I usually submit an e-consult and then get a message or email with advice or treatment.

Ironically my GP insisted you have an appointment with them to get on the online system. Which is crap as impossible to get the appointment in the first place

WhatMummyMakesSheEats · 23/02/2026 20:12

I always phone 111 if I’ve missed the chance of a same day appointment. Or sometimes I do that anyway in case a nurse can talk to me instead or whatever. They book you into a gp hub or just have a gp or nurse phone. For routine appointments I use their online triage system but it’s relatively new to my gp. 111 all the way for urgent but non emergencies.

That's disgraceful...surely just changing the name doesn't stop them from having to follow the law? I had a business that changed from a sole trader to a Ltd company and anyone who'd worked under the previous incarnation carried on their rights into the 'new' company? Argh, it's just awful that these companies with enough money can cheat the system!

loislovesstewie · 23/02/2026 20:17

My surgery has a form to be completed on line. It's then triaged. I find they do get back fairly quickly. Does yours not do that?

CanIRetirePlease · 23/02/2026 20:20

my gp has a recently switched all appointment booking to a new online system . You have to fill out a long form online and submit it for “triage”. You can’t submit it on a weekend, and basically if your form isn’t there at 9am you won’t get an appointment - you get an automated reply telling you all appointments are gone and you can either call 111 or try again tomorrow.

It is much worse than before!

Birch101 · 23/02/2026 20:29

Well they have to book in some some appts in advance e.g. prescription review, go in and speak in person and if not start calling other GPs in area to see how they operate and switch. Our local uni one is great as most client's are students so can get appts

But it is worth checking re e-consult, if not ooh utc and hopefully you'll get a referral for blood test go check thyroid

Studyunder · 23/02/2026 20:33

I’d call 111 again. You at least get to speak with a medical professional

gamerchick · 23/02/2026 20:38

Those of you who are saying 'just take a day off' need to watch. Sorry we missed you, to see what it's like as a self employed parcel carrier.🙄

This is why A&E is so swamped with people.

Tootiredcantsleep · 23/02/2026 20:44

I think the biggest issue here is your 'employer' not the NHS.

Your hearing needs to be attended to as a matter of priority. You shouldn't have to risk losing your job for a GPs appointment. Equally, the NHS shouldn't have to offer flexibility to make up for your uncaring employer.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 23/02/2026 21:31

I think it my ear was that painful and leaking gunk I would have been off work anyway and would have sat and waited or gone to a walk in.

other option is Bluetooth - start work early, call and then take half day off as needed for appointment and make up the time if needed to not lose the round.

when waiting for call back put phone super loud and vibrate so you don’t sleep through.
