Was I rude at the hairdressers?

I have autism so I am not the best at reading social cues. I booked in for full head highlights cut and blow dry. Maximum it usually takes is 5 hours. I was in there for 7 hours because she fit in 3 clients whilst she was with me and I had the bleach on for a very long time. I understand that completely but 7 hours I think is excessive and she said ‘you have been sat here for long’.

It came to 157 and I only had 20 pound notes so I gave her 160 instead of 180. She looked annoyed at me and I then felt bad and came home and transferred her a tip of 20 pounds.

My friend said I shouldn’t have done that because I was in there for 7 hours but I was very happy with the result and didn’t think 3 pound was enough.

Was I rude at the hairdressers?

You weren’t rude at all.

I understand why your friend said you were rude.

Personally, I would have rounded it up or given her a maximum of £10.

If anything the hairdresser was out of line taking 7 hours and making you wait!

LadyCrustybread · 22/02/2026 11:52

A full head of highlights and a cut and dry has never taken my hairdresser more than 3 hours… usually 2.5. She’s taking the piss out of you and I would go elsewhere.

I also never tip my hairdresser… he’s paid more than I am! And that didn’t stop me giving his aunts contact details when I moved to her city (abroad) so that I could ask someone for advice not from hugging me and crying ahead of my wedding day. So clearly he liked me.

You don’t have to tip and you don’t have to accept 7 hours.

Createausername1970 · 22/02/2026 11:53

I don't think so. 7 hours seems quite excessive. I hope you were offered a drink and some biscuits!! If you were self employed then that is effectively an extra two hours of your time lost.

Tipping is a choice, it's not mandatory and if someone wants a tip they earn it. I understand that when I have highlights etc the hairdresser fits others in around me, but it sounds like she underestimated how long the other bookings would take.

Keep an eye on your scalp, if you think the bleach was on there too long then it could cause a few problems.

NotnowMildrid · 22/02/2026 11:53

*I don’t understand your friend

roseymoira · 22/02/2026 11:55

7 hours?!? Did she cook you dinner??

Tink3rbell30 · 22/02/2026 11:57

Tell her the £20 is towards your next appointment. Not sure why you would pay her extra when she took so long.

NovemberMorn · 22/02/2026 11:57

You were not rude, and you were very generous to transfer an extra £20 to her account after you got home.

You were happy with the results, so that's good, the seven hour visit...not so good.

If you feel uncomfortable, in any way, try a different hairdresser next time.

Iloveeverycat · 22/02/2026 11:58

he’s paid more than I am!.
My DD specialises in highlights 26 and is still on minimum wage. She never expects a tip and is grateful when one is received.

ladyamy · 22/02/2026 12:01

Autism or not, tipping situation is always a bit awkward. I think you were fine.

dudsville · 22/02/2026 12:02

Keeping you there for 7 hours is a staggering inefficnecy on their part. Tipping is assumed, but it should be for outstanding service. You were not rude.

SexyFrenchDepression · 22/02/2026 12:02

That seems an excessive amount of time, even 5 hrs seem crazy! Tipping is optional, hairdressers are so expensive now that a lot of people won't want to add another tenner to the cost.

I dont really understand why there is an expectation to tip.

My hairdresser owns the salon he doesn’t need my tips.

Delphiniumandlupins · 22/02/2026 12:12

I have never tipped my hairdresser, except the wee Saturday girl who washes my hair (and only if she doesn't freeze/burn/soak me). 7 hours is ridiculous, even 5 is too long.

Netcurtainnelly · 22/02/2026 12:39

7 hours lol. Whose in the hairdressers that long.?

ZenNudist · 22/02/2026 12:41

I'd never go back. It should take max 3 hours. I'd have expected money off for that kind of ordeal.

skyeisthelimit · 22/02/2026 13:01

You weren't rude and you need a new hairdresser. I have foils, wash cut and blow dry and am usually there for 2-3 hours. She does fit other clients around me, but I am never sat there for very long waiting.

I don't tip because they get NMW now same as a lot of other people who don't expect tips, like office staff or shop staff.

AldiLidlDeeDee · 22/02/2026 13:10

Christ, she did not deserve a tip!!
You’re already paying far too much.

She took the piss by fitting in too many extra clients so leaving you sitting around for longer than was necessary. That would piss me right off and I wouldn’t return.

I would have given her the £160 and stood waiting for my change.

Stop being a pushover and learn to value yourself and your time.

Londontown12 · 22/02/2026 13:13

That's insane even if u had bum length hair length !! Shouldn't be know more than 3 Hours tops 3 and 1/2 if running behind with and in-between client !!
How did she do 3 clients u must have been at the basin along time !!!
I'm a hairdresser looks looks like maybe her column was full and she not experienced so her timings were slower than an experienced stylist !
That's 3 pound tip is a tip and if u thought that was enough she should be grateful u don't have to tip ! I've never expected a tip from any of my clients I did my job and got paid for it !!!

Buscobel · 22/02/2026 13:19

My hairdresser is the owner. She buys £400 bags, designer clothes and shoes and has far more money than me, so I don’t tip. I sometimes buy a product and I know they get perks for upselling.

holycrapballs · 22/02/2026 13:19

The most my highlights and cut has ever taken was 4 hours and that was when I had very long hair so everything takes longer. 3 hours now is average. She does do stuff inbetween but not to the point I’m made to wait.

It makes sense to have cuts and other colours booked in because you’re sat for ages for it to process but I wonder if someone had overbooked her.

Unless she’s amazing I think I’d find another salon.

holycrapballs · 22/02/2026 13:21

I do tip my hairdresser because I really like her and she’s so good. I’m inconsistent though as I never tip my beauty therapist who I also really like.

ExtraOnions · 22/02/2026 13:40

I’ve been with the same hairdresser for 15 years, never given a tip.

Full colour, which includes foils to bleach out highlights, so the colour I have looks right, full head of colour .. takes max 3 hours, and costs £76.

Your hairdresser is being disrespectful of your time, and charging you for the privilege

ClairDeLaLune · 22/02/2026 21:56

You weren’t rude at all! You were very restrained to not complain and I can’t believe you left a tip at all. 7 hours is ridiculous!
