To stop nurse from giving me an Iv flush?

I don’t know maybe I was. I don’t gel with her anyway she’s a band 4 with no sense of personal space. This morning she woke me up with her face in mine it really made me jump. Them proceeded to
hrlp me sit up o am not a complete invalid and she had me in a hold right next to her bust. I literally shouted that police song Don’t Stamd so close to me. She’s been on am hour and now she’s been in 9 times. Jesus I have to
jsve a shower and it’s her I’ve asked for some omelet as well.

Sou picc line needed flushing she went off and drew something up and tried to flush I syopprd her straight away and said she wasn’t qualified to flush long lines and I don’t know what was in it. She said she’s qualified on her own country for years. I’m a nurse, the band five came in flushed it and said the four can flush as she’s qualified at home. Am o wrong then? They are all lovely and trying their best but I just thought I don’t know what I are putting on me and it needs to be done sterile.

i will have a think about the personal space thing as it’s a difficult one she could be horrible to me

making my texts very complicated to follow

Don’t apologise OP. You are clearly struggling and some of the people on the thread have been harsh. You have the right to choose who treats you. No one should have to put up with someone they don't feel comfortable with, more so when they are ill. Get well soon Flowers

And the thing is, she doesn’t see it.
Fascinating in a way to see how truly nasty people justify it to themselves.

Differant bands have different coloured uniforms now. They were changed a while ago.

Thanks. I’m learning a lot from this thread! There had been nothing explaining this in the clinics that I’ve been to and the admin staff and medics that I’ve seen have all been in their own clothes.

So do all band 4’s wear a certain colour, and all band 5’s? Do bands dictate the uniform or roles (nurse / therapist / porter etc)?

CarefulN0w · 22/02/2026 17:57

I’m with OP on the sippy cup too. Someone who is too dim to work out who can drink from a normal cup and who doesn’t understand why sippy cups are strongly discouraged, doesn’t belong anywhere near IV lines. Sending you good wishes OP.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 22/02/2026 17:57

Sending you love and strength OP. You are really going through to but hope you are okay x

No... I agreed with her questioning the care.

I said there was no need for her nastiness about other aspects (complaining about the teacup, shouting at the nurse trying to help her get up, and being arsey to people who asked valid questions early in this thread).
I don't think it's reasonable to want respect whilst not giving it back.

I've said throughout that she should escalate the IV flush issue with more senior staff if she is unhappy with the care and suggested she also ask for a 2nd qualified staff member to be there for medical procedures if that would help.

You are despicable. This is a woman with advanced cancer who is clearly gravely unwell and struggling, and you can't give her a bit of grace?
You should be ashamed.

SpaceRaccoon · 22/02/2026 18:22

OP sending you love, and huge admiration for advocating for yourself so strongly even when you feel so poorly.

I've spent plenty of time hanging about in hospitals, thanks. They've been spread over several trusts and I can say, without hesitation, that I have never come across any such thing. Some departments have had photographs of the staff, giving their names and titles but nothing about uniforms.

What hospitals? It's really unusual if they haven't got what the staff uniforms mean.

So ive had a shower sitting on the chair with this band 4 and my band 5 this is the second time ive been with both of them and the band five knows somethings up as ive quietly mentioned it before. This to me is invading my personal space. I told the band five i would wash my own bits as i didnt want the bag disturbing ( this was a lie) so the shower is fine i repeat ill wash my own privates and im sat on the chair and her hand is down the back of my bum i move out of the way and take over then im dry the cream is out she says shall i do your breasts i say no put it in my hand and the band five says put it in her hand so while im doing one giant boob she starts to do the other! I think she is treating me like im care of the elderly. Maybe i should just be glad of the attention but at least it was infrontnof someone.

i had the bag changed this evening that was painful there was loads of old glue attached to my skin.

tomorrow is another day hopefully my giant leg can be sorted out and my insulin.Fingers crossed.

Now that the b5 has seen how uncomfortable you feel there is no need for you to have 2 staff for personal care, the nic can allocate someone else to look after you. All the best for tomorrow, are you getting any treatment for the fluid loss, it's over 2l a day.

But people are allowed personal space aren't they. Imagine sitting on a bus and someone randomly comes up to you and pulls you up. What's the difference?

Yeah I’m riddled with cancer and have a massive infection. I think it’s playing with my mind! I honestly thought two people had to check.

Wishing you a full recovery 🙏

The difference is the staff are not random people, ideally you just say please give me some space I can manage thanks but op is under a lot of stress and seemingly little things can feel very overwhelming.

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2026 20:37

Ive said it a thousand times😃 im beginning to think she doesnt understand my accent or shevhas hearing issues.

i’m in two minds - we’d all like to think that all hospital staff are great, competent and professional. But sadly anyone who has been around hospitals personally or professionally knows that’s not the case so I don’t blame you for questioning. Having said that there is a way to do it politely - if you get their backs up you risk being labelled “difficult” - it shoudnt make a difference to the care you get but….

They aren't personal friends so yes they are random people. And they should ASK if help needed rather than manhandling someone

FranticFrankie · 22/02/2026 20:46

Band 4 is likely to be a Nursing Associate as band 5 is an RGN (registered nurse)
Speak to the nurse in charge if you're not happy with any aspect of your care

Hope you are feeling better soon OP 💐

So sorry for what you are going through.
I'm a RN as well, they should be flushing the PICC line under sterile conditions.
Especially when you are immuno-compromised.
You are right to insist on this and speak to someone senior.
Just because someone can do something " in their own country "- they should not just be allowed to go ahead here.
I don't know where you are but I've only came across a few band 4s where I am and they weren't allowed to give IVs.

They should have been assessed and given training in this hospital to ensure they are competent.
This has happened to me starting in a new hospital even though I'd been giving IV drugs for years.

Hoping you are soon feeling a bit better and things improve.

As a nurse, you should know , nothing is sterile....on the ward, that is why we do ANTT......

ToffeePennie · 22/02/2026 21:45

Trust your instincts. I was in anestetics being prepped for surgery; I knew something would go wrong so I asked them to not flush my line until the last moment. I suffer white coat syndrome massively, so they did what I said to keep my blood pressure down.
2 seconds later someone ran in screaming that the path lab hadn’t accepted my blood sample and therefore to cancel surgery.
Luckily - my unflushed line provided enough blood to allow the procedure to proceed.

Screaming. ...really??
They couldn't have just taken another sample?

Such drama!

@EachandEveryone did she have a dressing pack, alcohol wipes, etc? You'll know that a sterile non-touch technique is used for a PICC, so if she really did just go and grab a flush, that's quite concerning.

I think you need to raise the personal care issue formally, if you can. You don't want someone touching your intimate areas and you don't need it.

Is your wound too shallow for a vac dressing?

Sorry you're so poorly.

I remember it like that. It probably wasn’t that extreme, but like I said - major white coat syndrome. My BP was skyrocketing and I was hysterically crying before she came in.
