Is stodge ever coming back?

Glaspeated · 21/02/2026 23:01

Suet puddings, jam roly poly, dumplings, stodge, stodge, stodge. Britain was built on it.

But is stodge going the way of the jellied eel and the lampreys and swan, and being consigned to history?

Or will it ever make a come back?

If it does come back in fashion, I won’t be following it! Makes my stomach turn!

CalliopeFosterBeauchamp · 21/02/2026 23:18

I love sponge puds. And pasta. Stodge has evolved!

Helpforsummer · 21/02/2026 23:22

Dumplings are still a staple for me and my kids 🤌🏼

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 21/02/2026 23:22

I love making a quick sponge pudding, so yummy.

youalright · 21/02/2026 23:23

We always have dumplings

Wallabyone · 21/02/2026 23:23

I like jellied eels!

anddeepbreathandsigh · 21/02/2026 23:24

Macaroni cheese with chips is my stodge. Also bread and butter pudding

Denim4ever · 21/02/2026 23:24

Sticky toffee pudding never went away. Although not something I'd eat at home.

Sausage and mash, roasts, steak and chips, shepherds pie also very much still food people eat

neversaynevereverforever · 21/02/2026 23:25

The best comfort food ever. Sticky toffee pudding and dumplings in a stew really beats any other dish.

JetFlight · 21/02/2026 23:25

Dd made a steamed syrup pudding the other day. Was really good. Can’t say we have that often but we to have bread and butter pudding sometimes. That’s pretty stodgy.

UnctuousUnicorns · 21/02/2026 23:26

Last time I holidayed in Devon, I had a fresh, hot, cheese and onion pasty. It was blimmin' glorious. 😋

HeddaGarbled · 21/02/2026 23:27

It was a cheap way of filling you up. Most people don’t need to do this now.

Sasha07 · 21/02/2026 23:28

It hasn't left my house! Love abit of stodge over winter.
If anyone worked in school kitchens in the 90s and knows the semolina recipe, I'd be at full stodge happiness. Every recipe I've tried just doesn't hit the same.

gototogo · 21/02/2026 23:29

Still make dumplings, suet rolypoly etc here

Nutmuncher · 21/02/2026 23:31

Dumplings, steak and kidney puddings, sticky toffee pudding. It’s a huge chunk of my diet. Stodge is king in our house

MidWayThruJanuary · 21/02/2026 23:33

Sussex Pond pudding is delicious

TofuTuesday · 21/02/2026 23:33

Spotted dick and custard. Amazing.

AWedgeOfLemonAndASmartAnswerForEverything · 21/02/2026 23:38

I only make it every few years but, by god, steak and kidney pudding is delicious.

Crinkle77 · 21/02/2026 23:42

It's never gone away for me. I had a steak pudding last night from chippy with chips and gravy 😋

Nomorecoconutboosts · 21/02/2026 23:44

@sasha- I don’t have the semolina recipe but for me I recall the red jam on it - more like a cross between cheap jam and that red stuff we had on Mr Whippy ice creams? If you made normal semolina but slightly watered down, and created the jam, I think it would work?

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2026 23:49

I do like dumplings on top of a rich beef stew but only when they are crispy on the top, I don’t like stodgy puddings though.

CombatBarbie · 21/02/2026 23:51

I started buying mr kipling sponge puddings, first for nostalgia then for a "period stodge fest" or just because....with custard! Banana bread and custard still happens frequently too!

KarriTreeSullivan · 21/02/2026 23:51

You must live in London or something? In the countryside stodge is still a staple! A pie and mash shop has just opened in my area. I bake sponges most weeks, pasta is in so many meals, mash potato, homemade pastry too. I even make dumplings from time to time though not with suet. To be fair suet is probably long gone. Roast dinners are still a big thing round here with people regularly asking where's the best in the area. Sticky toffee pudding is a regular on menus round here too and loads of stuff with custard.

mrsCtheRed · 22/02/2026 00:02

Stodge is still alive and well in my house.
But then, I live in the North, and would eat a scabby horse if it had gravy or custard on it 😋😋

canuckup · 22/02/2026 00:11

It needs to. Meat and two veg and a pudding is filling, healthy, and often cheap
