To phone in sick tomorrow due to a UTI?

Im on day 2 (possibly 3 but symptoms weren’t that bad first day) of a UTI, the worst day so far which triggered a visit the pharmacy this afternoon and I have been given some Nitrofurantoin.

I barely slept last night as I was up and down to the toilet, currently I’m up and down every 20 mins or so to the toilet. My lower back hurts, I can’t sit comfortably as my bladder constantly feels full and I’m feeling quite sick and have the dreaded burning when I go.

I work in a GP surgery as a receptionist. I’ll be on the phone for about 9 hours tomorrow (obviously not continually but whenever the phone rings it needs answering).

It would be quite disruptive for our patients (having to wait longer for phone to be answered) and for my colleagues, plus last time I had Nitrofurantoin it made me feel really sick and on top of how I’m feeling now I’m dreading it make me feel even worse.

Would I be unreasonable to call in sick given it’s just a UTI? If it makes it seem more reasonable, ive not had sick leave in almost 5 years.

JUST a UTI? We women have got to stop this negativity towards our own pain. Of course you should go sick! Get well, work is not your priority, your health is, and should always be your No.1. I hope you feel better soon

You are sick op, of course you can call in sick. Your colleagues will know you are not someone who takes the piss.

PurpleDisco · 20/02/2026 19:10

@HealthConcerns how are you today? If you have a UTI then you’ll need a course of antibiotics. Hope you took the day off. Btw as you work in a GP surgery could you ask one of the GP’s to write a prescription for you or would you need to see your own GP?

HealthConcerns · 20/02/2026 19:27

Just to update, I didn’t work today. Had a fever of 39 when I woke up and was being sick over night. Been in bed most of the day and finally have started to feel a bit better this evening. Have had 3 doses of my antibiotics and going to try to have a quiet weekend to rest and hopefully be back in on Monday

Op said in the first paragraph they went to a pharmacy and got antibiotics

FeedMeSantiago · 20/02/2026 20:10

If you have back pain and vomiting OP you probably have a kidney infection. I get UTIs a lot and have had 3 kidney infections.

I would try and get seen by an out of hours GP/walk in centre/A&E - make sure you're on the right antibiotics if it's spread to your kidneys as you may need a stronger course.

I’ve called in sick with a uti on more than one occasion over the years. My boss knows if I call in sick then I am genuinely too sick to do my job properly. I think after 5 years of no sick days your boss will know it’s genuine.

MMAS · 20/02/2026 20:42

You work in a GP Surgery and asking on here? God help any of the GPs patients who go to your surgery then. Are they really that bad you cannot even approach them yourself. If you have not had sick leave in 5 years as you say, then I would absolutely hate to come across you on reception trying to get an appointment.

HealthConcerns · 20/02/2026 20:52

@MMASactually, I don’t take sick leave as don’t get sick that often 🙄 If you read the full thread it was out of concern of judgement from my colleagues for calling in sick as a few of them can be right cows about others phoning in sick.

@FeedMeSantiagoI’ll go to urgent care in the morning if I’m still bad. The vomiting and back pain have now subsided and my fever has gone too. Just wiped out now

Do you have blood in your wee? If so, you might have a kidney infection . You mentioned that your lower back is hurting as well. Perhaps you should see your GP for some antibiotics. Either way you are not well and should go sick.

Tuesdayschild50 · 20/02/2026 21:16

Don't be daft .. your not well look after you we forget this sometimes.
Don't feel guilty getting yourself better.

Drink plenty of cranberry juice, works like magic for URI'S.. Many years ago training as a doctor , my boss told me cranberries are good for reducing blood pressure, improving digestion and for UTI'S . I still say to this day how right he was....

Hopefully you're beginning to feel better, that feeling if weeing out glass shards is absolutely awful.
