What would you think of this incident at work? Xenophobia

In a Teams group at work with a number of other teams, working in a public facing role.
I'm one of the very few with a 'European' surname and basically a surname that isn't Smith, Jones, Roberts etc.

A woman made a joke about a certain nationality, she had some customers that were suspected of fraud and she wrote in the chat 'And of course they're _ nationality, no surprise there 😂'

I was quite surprised she put this in a public Teams chat with over 40 people on. I saw she deleted it 2 minutes later then literally right after that I got a private message from a manager saying, 'Oh just out of interest, where's your surname from?' 🙄

Clearly trying to check it wasn't the country she'd made a comment about. It isn't but it's a neighboring country, tbh it's made me think a bit less of the woman who posted it, people can have their opinions but to voice it so publicly says a lot.

Is there a country stereotypically associated with fraud? I can't think of one?! But she was wrong to type it and stupid to do so in such a forum. It sounds like it was dealt with swiftly at the time though?

I observed the same situation a few years ago - someone on a conference call re insurance fraud made a "joke" comment about all the Romanians being at it 🤨 they were rightly pulled up on it. It absolutely is xenophobic.
