To think the hotel were out of order with valentines stay/room?

I had a night away booked with my boyfriend on Saturday (the first time we had stayed overnight with each other).

It was a modern hotel with a glass window to the bathroom which was supposed to turn opaque when a button was selected. It was apparent this wasn’t working.

We went downstairs to reception to ask for it to be fixed, receptionist said they’d send someone to take a look. Maintenance man came up and said it was a common issue but he didn’t have the part needed (and wouldn’t have it until midweek) so he accompanied us back to reception again saying they’d give us another room.

The receptionist said there was no alternative rooms available as the hotel was full due to valentines and when this happens, couples have ‘seen it all before so just laugh about it’ and enjoy their stay.

I said this wasn’t acceptable and asked for the manager - who did appear from the back office but basically doubled down and said there was nothing they could do. She did offer us a voucher for a drink each in the bar (really!!) as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

As we had traveled some distance we decided to stay, and used the communal loos in the reception area whenever there was a need (luckily there was no need to in the night).

I found them thoroughly dismissive and am awaiting a response to my formal complaint to head office.

AIBU to find these customer service standards appalling?

And I'm sorry for your partner if you have one, if 'comfortable' in your book means you're happy to take a dump in potential view of them.

Maybe it could be a new Instagram Official stage:

‘Happy to announce that I’m now so comfortable with my partner that I took a shit in front of him this morning. #MakingMemories.’

UnctuousUnicorns · 19/02/2026 16:24

The latest in all fresco retro w.c. chic...

Mind, I shouldn't give them ideas.

I've shared a hotel room with my brother in the past, despite the fact we get on well together, we don't get on well enough to actually take a poo in a small hotel room with glass around the toilet area where it can be heard or partially seen.

Walls and a closed door is my normal for a poo and that's how it will always be.

I was looking on rightmove earlier this week and a house for sale near me has an "open en suite" in the bedroom. Yuk!

Replies here are so odd. People are different and it’s not a badge of honour to happily
crap in front of anyone but what isn’t different are walls. If I pay for a hotel room I would expect not to be able to see into a bathroom when the door is closed.

It also ignores the fact that it's not always a partner that you are sharing a room with! Could be an offspring, a parent, even a friend - I mean, I love my friends, but I am NOT going to sit on the toilet in front of them.

LarsenBiceshelf · 21/02/2026 20:27

The woman that set up the website I linked to earlier started it after booking a twin room with her dad and then finding out they had an open plan loo 😱

MummyWillow1 · 21/02/2026 20:38

What stupid hotel designer ever thought it was a good idea to have a glass wall in a bathroom?!

I would have asked for a refund and gone home even if it was functioning correctly.

I sometimes stay in a room with my daughter or a friend and wouldn’t want them to see me in the bathroom either!

In once stayed at a really cheap ‘budget’ hotel for a work trip and the shower was in the room! It at least had opaque glass so you couldn’t see through it but the toilet at least had a proper door!

Fizbosshoes · 21/02/2026 21:29

Just stayed in a Clayton hotel. Can confirm it had a proper door (and walls!) on the bathroom, no annoying fan that whirrs all night, it was dark enough, duvet not tucked in ....but I was too hot
....and there was not enough towel hanging space

How the fuck do you do that? If I need to shit, then I need to shit. It’s not going to wait quietly. At the very least I’d be farting while attempting to hold it in.

I’m another who has been married for a long time and I have no desire to see my DH taking a shit. I don’t want him to see me taking a shit.

I agree with the second part of your statement.

As for the first, I had no idea people couldn't control this. I dont do it at work, in public toilets and certainly not in hotel rooms with clear windows.

Don't be silly.

Genuinely had no idea people were unable to go 20 hours without it 😳
Are you the people pooing on aeroplanes and making the whole cabin stink?

If I need a poo, I can wait as long as it takes to find a toilet. If I need a poo, I can’t wait 20 hours to go for a poo. Where do you think it would go for those 20 hours? Back up?
if I don’t need a poo, I can easily go 20 hours without one, because I don’t need one.

MapleSyrupOnToas · 21/02/2026 21:55

Yanbu. I cant stand this stupid trend for hotel en suites to have a lack of privacy. There should be a wall and door.

People who like to share their bodily functions can leave the door open. The rest of us can have our privacy. WALL and DOOR!!

Or rather, don't do one. Whatever.

Yes indeed.
Not only that, but it further ignores the fact that it's not just about happy crappers; what about the crapees? No one wants to see someone else sitting there heaving, plopping and wiping, regardless of relationship, and regardless of how unbothered the crapper themself is.

Furthermore, the whole room would just look like a bathroom if you can see the loo. Who wants to spend a romantic (or any) weekend in the bog?

scottishgirl69 · 22/02/2026 09:52

To be fair they tried to fix it. They couldn't move you rooms as the hotel was full - I'm not sure that equates to awful customer service to be honest.

What was it you wanted them to do when they didn't have another room to move you to?

The OP wants (I presume), and should get, a full refund for her stay, because for those of us who value our privacy when answering the call, a glass walled, see through bathroom is not fit for purpose, and as such, ruined her and her boyfriend's what should have been romantic getaway. And that is shit (pun intended). A poxy drink doesn't wash (ditto) as sufficient recompense. Other hotel chains will fully refund for less. VH are clearly sharks.

Lots of hotel chains won't refund even if there are issues.

I'm taking it your in a relatively new relationship?

I can understand if your uncomfortable, having someone watch you isn't very nice.

For me that dignity left the relationship years ago 🤣.
I'm 20 plus years in and the times the door has been opened to ask my opinion about this that or the other whilst I take my constitutional is numerous.

Having a bath and they come home stressed so we have a conversation one on the toilet the other in the bath is also numerous.

We don't have children so we are each other's comfortable. Its how it is. There were times I would be like really????

But I would miss that should it stop now. Its a closeness i have never experienced in my whole life.

Ok im done reflecting im off for a cuddle 🤣

I have had an email response today.

In short - they back the hotel for their handling and said all advertised facilities were available (the bathroom screen is not referenced on the booking details).

They said the first colleague I spoke with attempted to inject some light hearted humour and had not anticipated I wouldn’t appreciate this. They then said the colleague ‘noted your acquaintance did appear to see the funny side’.

They also quoted my check out time and said I made full use of the room.

Edited

That’s pretty awful.

please make sure you review on trip advisor so that others can be warned and avoid this hotel

Exactly this. Quite apart from not wanting people to see me on the toilet, I don’t want to see them on the toilet. I’d quite happily go through life not seeing anyone else shit. I mean, sometimes it may be unavoidable (caring for an ill relative, having young children etc), but that’s entirely different to being on a romantic night away with a new partner.
I’ve been married to my husband for 16 years. I still fancy him and we have a very healthy sex life. Would that be the case if I regularly saw him on the toilet? Not sure!
