To think the hotel were out of order with valentines stay/room?

I had a night away booked with my boyfriend on Saturday (the first time we had stayed overnight with each other).

It was a modern hotel with a glass window to the bathroom which was supposed to turn opaque when a button was selected. It was apparent this wasn’t working.

We went downstairs to reception to ask for it to be fixed, receptionist said they’d send someone to take a look. Maintenance man came up and said it was a common issue but he didn’t have the part needed (and wouldn’t have it until midweek) so he accompanied us back to reception again saying they’d give us another room.

The receptionist said there was no alternative rooms available as the hotel was full due to valentines and when this happens, couples have ‘seen it all before so just laugh about it’ and enjoy their stay.

I said this wasn’t acceptable and asked for the manager - who did appear from the back office but basically doubled down and said there was nothing they could do. She did offer us a voucher for a drink each in the bar (really!!) as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

As we had traveled some distance we decided to stay, and used the communal loos in the reception area whenever there was a need (luckily there was no need to in the night).

I found them thoroughly dismissive and am awaiting a response to my formal complaint to head office.

AIBU to find these customer service standards appalling?

OMG that sounds appalling! I think I would be demanding a refund! We have 3 toilets in our house but my husband gets relegated to using the downstairs one if he needs a poo! We have an en suite shower and loo which we both use to wee but we always shut the door. I do not want to see him on the loo or vice versa not to mention the smell! The hotels we have stayed in fortunately have had separate bathroom / toilets however I always try to use it before he does.

bananafishbones1 · 19/02/2026 08:57

I read the title and thought I know the hotel you mean! We've been together thirty years so it didn't bother me per se, but I took a video of the opaque glass changing and sent to friends as was incredulous that anyone would want that in an hotel room 😂

Mind you, I love the Sanderson but that has a rather similar bathroom situ going on 😂

It might be budget by the standards of your average six figure earning Mumsnetter, but I can assure you there was nothing budget about the price.

Its a budget hotel, comparing it to your average six figure earning Mumsnetter doesnt mean anything. Its a well known bed in a box room hotel, hence the price.

Travelodge is a budget hotel
They have proper doors and walls

Yeah I’ve stayed in loads of budget hotels in my time and they’ve all had walls between the room and the toilet. I don’t think you should have to expect to pay extra for that.

It’s nothing to do with budget. As a “six figure earning Mumsnetter” I can say the trend is rife in very expensive hotels too (possibly even more so as it looks all designer-y). There’s no need to be rude about the OP’s choice of hotel.

Well sadly, we can't all be a Slack Alice. Your low standards are your own business but some of us set the bar a bit higher!
.

DP and I were once seasick on an overnight ferry. Spent hours hanging over the loo bowl together to puke into it.
It hasn't wrecked our relationship, but also it was unavoidable.

Do we know what the hotel is?

and it definitely isn’t a budget thing the hotel I was looking at was a very posh Santa Monica hotel!

LarsenBiceshelf · 19/02/2026 11:32

In future you need to look at this site before you book - genius. I have been with my husband for 30 years and neither of us wants to see the other straining on the loo.

OP can keep that in mind for the next time she wants a romantic getaway then.

ThiagoJones · 19/02/2026 11:40

Honestly I can’t believe people are trying to argue that if you go to a budget hotel you shouldn’t expect to be able to shit in private.

I mean, do the plebs even have indoor toilets??? Surely they are all used to shitting in a bucket in front of the entire family....

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 19/02/2026 12:25

I’ve been married decades and I still do not want to see my husband take a dump on holiday. They sold you a room that’s not as described because they haven’t fixed the faulty privacy function.

At least she'd have beeen able to take a fucking pee or dump in private if she had!!

Ironic when you think that poorer people had only outside toilets, away from the house for far longer than the wealthy! Both my parents remember it well, plus of course the po at night!

Why not just turn off the lights if you are so bothered? It doesn't seem like something worth making a big deal of. What are you expecting?

Erm, privacy, maybe? You might be OK with crapping in potential sight of a partner, but I think you'll find most people are. And, as a pp has pointed out, it's not practical to take a dump in the dark.

dreamiesformolly · 19/02/2026 15:11

YourTidyGreyRobin · 18/02/2026 18:44

I'm sorry that you do not feel comfortable enough with your own partner.

And I'm sorry for your partner if you have one, if 'comfortable' in your book means you're happy to take a dump in potential view of them.

Weird that you’re so fiercely defensive of a hotel with no walls round the toilets!

I dont think iv actually mentioned the walls in the room at all

You’re being ridiculous.

I totally disagree with you. It is unacceptable. The hotel knew in advance.

Wait what? 😂

Well no. You don’t have to explicitly mention them. It’s what the thread is about.

LittleMG · 19/02/2026 15:50

I can’t believe people think this is ok. I am very close to my husband, he is the person who I’d tell anything to but I would not have a poo in front for him fgs that is so grim and I think disrespectful. And I am by no means one to stand on ceremony but this is a red line. Also I don’t want to see him go to the toilet do it? This is enough to kill the vibe on Valentine’s Day. I would 100% complain I’d want a refund or a voucher to stay. Awful.
