Issues with formula availability

AIBU to be concerned/surprised about the current situation with first infant formula? Three of the main brands cow and gate, Aptamil and SMA have been off the shelves everywhere I’ve been for over a week now. Kendamil doesn’t agree with my baby which only leaves Hipp and that’s hard to get hold of.

AIBU to be worried about this and to be surprised there is not more coverage of it in the news? I can’t believe there will be enough stock of Kendamil/SMA to meet the demands of all the babies who are used to taking the three recalled milks!

Have you tried the aldi brand?

There is no shortage. It’s simply supermarkets hadn’t ordered enough. I’m sure they will adjust their numbers and stock the shelves accordingly. If you order direct from Kendamil there’s no issue

I don’t know anything about the shortage if there is one but if there is, it makes perfect sense that it’s not being reported in the media. That would just cause panic buying.

I lived in Australia when there was a formula shortage because of an issue in China and it was dreadful. And also insane. You could only buy one tin per customer and it was ‘out the back’ rather than on the shelves and people were ringing everyone they knew and getting them to come and buy one each. People were desperate. Shops were refusing to sell it to people who they thought were selling it on.

There is a shortage due to the recall of formula that was contaminated and making babies ill. It will take time for stock to be replenished

Pinkstuffs · 16/02/2026 19:35

I know why there is a shortage but the narrative was that it only impacted a few batches. All of the brand’s milks have been taken off the shelves, not just the impacted batches.

There have been recalls on all the three main brands and all the stock has been taken off the shelves so there is a shortage. Kendamil doesn’t agree with my baby unfortunately.

Yeah I ordered mine off Amazon directly from SMA - But they refunded me for batches that were not affected. So I would say by that logic they have purged all their stock to be safe.

This then will take time to rebuild stock profiles. My boy has just turned 6 months so we can move on to follow on pretty soon. But I really feel for newborns 2-3 months old on formular!

The government should of stepped in on this for some support. But they are more useless then many past governments!
