To think that a lot of surgeons profit from women’s poor self-esteem?

It sometimes feels like the cosmetic surgery industry thrives on making women feel “not enough” and then sells them the fix. I’m not saying every procedure is bad or that no one should ever get work done but the way certain surgeons and clinics market themselves feels exploitative.

AIBU to think we should be talking more about how this plays on insecurity rather than empowerment?

It doesn't sometimes feel like that. It is that, for women and for men. That's literally the point of it - non-essential cosmetic work that people wouldn't need if they were happy with themselves. There's a whole spectrum ofc and people may genuinely get a self-esteem boost if they've always had a hang-up about their nose or whatever, but generally it's more about change the physical stuff when the real issue isn't physical. But regardless, it's not just surgeons profiting, it's everything from the fashion industry to hair salons to surgeons to tattooists, so why single out surgeons. At some point, you have to let people make choices and if they choose to spend their money on surgery, why shouldn't surgeons profit?

When has anyone ever said that cosmetic surgery is empowering? 🥴

Of course it's about fixing an insecurity. I can't wait to do it, personally.

BlueJuniper94 · 15/02/2026 16:56

Yes.

People absolutely claim they are 'doing it for me' and 'it's my choice' etc. Definitely a load of empowerment claims.

TheActualQueen · 15/02/2026 17:36

Literally this is why they exist.

Yes the number of women that go for cosmetic surgery on their vaginas has been directly linked to the fact that the majority of women have absolutely no knowledge that vaginas vary tremendously from woman to woman. They are sold a story that that there is a specific way vaginas should look. As depicted in porn. And so they opt for totally unnecessary surgery for a problem that doesn't exist.

And similarly women are presented witb a " look" that is manufactured by the cosmetic surgery industry regarding their face, their breasts, their bums, and told that is the norm and they are inadequate if they don't conform to that.

Absolutely criminal imo.

This isn’t a new concept or theory OP, it’s very well established.

LadyKenya · 15/02/2026 19:17

Is that not the foundation of the whole beauty industry? Women are encouraged to spend good money on anti-ageing creams ect, that really don't do anything, except lighten the purse. It is all built on the insecurity of Women, and increasingly Men!

usedtobeaylis · 15/02/2026 19:18

Yes they do and it's also where 'choice feminism' taken to the extreme falls flat on its face.

Everything thrives on women’s low self esteem. The amount of ‘basic’ grooming women do now is insane. Half the women here have a regular appointment for acrylics, false lashes or LVL, ‘HD brows’ and they also fake tan and have high maintenance looking hair. It’s madness - who has the time or money? They look amazing but I’m genuinely wondering how they fit it in as well as caring for DC and working

The thought of that is terrifying! Why do women put themselves through such pain...it's so sad industries prey on this.

Can I ask what area you're in roughly? I think grooming levels have gone up, and yes it is q shame. As Gloria Steinem said in the 70s, many women feel they should pay more attention to what they wear than what they read.

HoskinsChoice · 15/02/2026 23:34

Wait. A woman volunteering to go to a surgeon to have her body chopped up is the surgeon's fault? What? Nobody forces them. Its the woman's choice. If she is so vain that she wants someone to inject her face with chemicals or have bits of their face/body chopped off, that's the woman's fault, nobody else's.

Christ, women are pathetic. Stop blaming men for everything. Sometimes women have to accept that women can be a bit stupid.

MindYourUsage · 16/02/2026 00:08

Corporations would stand to lose billions if women simply decided they're happy with the way they look.
