Is having no money as it can go so quickly

OP posts:
gototogo · 15/02/2026 10:31

we are all different with money and whatever have, I keep a higher balance because I don’t want to go lower, it doesn’t mean you spend any more you just treat £5k as zero . It means I have a cushion for emergencies. As for £2k disappearing quickly, I don’t earn £2k so I have to be more careful. My bills are £650 a month plus a save £100 for car related annual expenses, we share these costs between us. We spend overall around £1500 per month now (mortgage paid off)

Ihavelostthegame · 15/02/2026 10:36

Oh good another coast stealth post from a completely out of touch poster. No OP £2000 in your account is not nothing! It’s a heck of a lot more than a lot of people have and it makes you incredibly fortunate.
Im “working” on having £100 permanently in my account. It’s not going well.

Puttingonabraveface247 · 15/02/2026 10:41

Slightly off track but does anyone else find that if any extra expenses are going to be needed they always happen towards the end of the month when funds are at there lowest? 😥

Examples of past months have been the fridge/freezer needing replacing, my child's iPad smashing (he has SEND and relies on it), his spinner seat breaking (needs it for sensory), his coat needing replacing (came home from school with it ripped)......It's always when I'm at my lowest.

For context I'm an unpaid carer (single parent) of a child with complex needs.

I do remember thinking this also, but I suppose you do remember when you are stressed more than when all is ok.

That seems pointless to me because that £5k could be earning far more interest in a savings account than sat in my current account.

Bjorkdidit · 15/02/2026 11:31

Many current accounts pay a reasonable interest rate, not much less than a savings account.

At most you're going to get about £200 pa on £5k of savings so people might be happy with say £120 for the convenience of keeping a bit of a float in their current account.

Yeah maybe. I can transfer from my savings to my current account in about 30 seconds on my phone if needed so I’d rather earn the extra interest.

BashfulClam · 15/02/2026 11:38

I have £16 in mine so that would be a lot of money.

Isobel201 · 15/02/2026 11:49

my current wage is 31k a year, so just over 2k a month however I'm slightly different because I do get standard rate PIP as an extra benefit. I'd say I always have about £500 left per month after all bills have been paid.

How long does that need to last? 😢is it just for you or dc too?

slow day again!

Edited

Just me and i get paid on 28th. I have enough food etc so it’s just ‘spending money’.

Laughanotherday · 15/02/2026 13:02

Yes easily gone - we had a car issue on axels, 1.5k and that wasn't with a main dealership.

Never mind a private root canal at the dentist or crown work.

Moneymadness · 15/02/2026 13:26

To be honest I think most “major” emergencies would wipe out the best part of 2k. And as someone already said for most people it takes longer to save 2k than it does to spend it.

FamilynotMaiden · 15/02/2026 00:29

I've currently got less than £400 in mine! £2000 I would consider a luxury.

Same.. well I have less than 400 .

Chinsupmeloves · 15/02/2026 18:08

Do you mean as in all your money or just in current account? A bit more clarity needed but it's of course a good amount, better than being overdrawn!

SmudgeButt · 15/02/2026 18:30

We have a flexi mortgage which basically means that we have a massive arranged overdraft. I used to look at it in despair every time I took money out of the ATM as it would tell me I was overdrawn by £120k+. I've now got it down to the point we're out of the overdraft which after 20 years looks pretty weird.

You’ve not really given any information there OP. Is that £2000 in your account before housing and bills come out or £2000 left after that’s all come out. That should of been a key bit of information in your OP

Is this a real post or a bit of bait to induce traffic?

Sorry, Coconutter24, I meant is the original post real? I was echoing your pov., that the original qun is meaningless and, I suspect, merely a traffic-generator.

You’re probably right considering they haven’t come back to answer anything

That "small " amount to a lot of people would completely clear all my debts, allow me to sleep at night and fill my food cupboard and oil tank up for the first time in years!

We can all dream...
