Drinkers in Spoons

I'm away and at spoons having breakfast.

Every single table apart from mine has pints going, at 8.30.

Aibu thinking it's weird?

Sorry? You've never been to the pub on your own? Wild.

I went today whilst my family were at home.

Not going to start getting pissed at 8am though

You've just said retail so yes supermarkets are ideal and are now open for extended hours. Some 24hrs. There are plenty of places to go for 'human contact'. Getting pissed at 8.30 is not necessary in the quest for human contact.
Or maybe get a dog. Dog walking is a very sociable pass time and cheaper than booze.

What planet are you on where dog ownership is cheaper than the odd pint on a Saturday morning? 😂

There’s a bar by my work (not a chain place, a proper little boozer) which has shifted opening hours - really early opening but then shuts mid afternoon. When I pass it on my way in about 8am it’s always busy and I assume it’s people coming off shifts at places like the harbour.

Which is clearly for male shift drinkers.

Nobody is asking you to.

Just stop hoiking your judgy pants.

Tarkan · 14/02/2026 13:04

Our Spoons doesn’t serve alcohol before 11am so it’s all people in for breakfast and coffee/soft drinks before that. You get to a couple of minutes before 11 and the regulars all start queueing up for their pints though.

DH is a night shift worker and I know the last thing he wants to do after a long shift is have a drink. At best he pops into Greggs for bacon rolls to bring home and then he heads to bed. He only drinks when he has a day off. But then it’s a long wait until 11 even if he did want a drink after work. He’s also not allowed to wear his uniform to any pub no matter what he’s having, even if it was only a Spoons breakfast and coffee.

Having breakfast before my oncology appointment? I stayed in a cheap hotel and had no cooking facilities

Maybe they have no cooking facilities. Maybe they work night shifts. Maybe they just want a pint at 8am and don’t expect someone to be pretending to have never heard of alcoholism!

GreenGodiva · 14/02/2026 13:08

TheDaringOliveNewt · 14/02/2026 09:44

Why would you go to a pub by yourself at 8am. Alcohol is expensive and the effort of going outside lol

I know several shift workers that finish work and head off straight to spoons for breakfast and a few beers as soon as it opens. It’s their version of a Friday night drink, surely you can see that ? It would be even more weird for them to get up at 8pm and have beer for breakfast and then go to work surely 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 13:10

@TheDaringOliveNewt see that is an interesting mindset - having a drink =getting pissed.

Mr Monkey works shifts and some weekends or bank holidays I will be on my own. Often I will take myself off a new place for a walk or a museum/gallery visit. I sometimes end the day, before I get the train back, in a nice looking pub and have a pint or two while I read a book or just muse on my day.

Ok the rest of them are regulars and don't work. Explain that

You can have a drink without getting pissed. Do you struggle to just have one?

This is such a bizarre conversation. Nobody is arguing that all these people are there for the same reasons. As mentioned multiple times, some of them are alcoholics. Surely this was all obvious to you before you started the thread?

It’s so weird and disingenuous. Just say you want to pile on sad alcoholics to feel superior, don’t pretend.

My local Spoons does an absolutely lovely breakfast.

You can also get a refillable tea/coffee so it's good value too.

Well over half of Mumsnetters are chugging down booze at 6am on Christmas morning, so 8am is nothing to many people 👀

NewGoldFox

drinking alone is absolutely not just for alcoholic s! Sweeping statement! I absolutely love sitting in my local people watching- by choice- alone- for a bit of downtime.

Of course they don’t work. Apparently they all sit on their own and refuse to speak to anyone ever. Who’d want to employ someone like that? They wouldn’t do very well in a job interview refusing to speak.

Or of course they could be retired.

Shamsie24 · 14/02/2026 13:17

Bit harsh - they might have just finished the night shift or have early morning jobs like Post workers or bin men.

trappedCatAsleepOnMe · 14/02/2026 13:18

I expect most are just having breakfast with coffee and tea - though depends on the sppon in question - the one left in town is now full of older male drinkers who do seem to start early - other two that closed were much nicer to go for family meals in.

We were trying to have an early lunch with family at local independent pub here that does good food - couldn't get a table then when we finally did turned out they weren't doing lunch till a set time - entire place was packed out for their Saturday breakfasts. Unfortunately that annoyed family member we were with who then stormed out.

All the supermarkey cafes that used to be around have closed in recent years - coffee shops also seem to be closing.

Drinking in a pub? What next reading in bookshop? Where will it end?

Don't be obtuse. It's drinking at 0830 that's the point.

And what point is that, exactly?

rainforestalliance · 14/02/2026 13:21

I like going to spoons for breakfast, it’s 2.99 for a breakfast wrap with unlimited coffee. Win.

Agree I couldn’t stomach alcohol that early though!

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/02/2026 13:22

There was a lovely old boy in our block of flats who would go to Spoons every day for a mid morning pint after his walk and would make it last a couple of hours.

Deapite efforts of various neighbours I think he was a bit lonely and this was something to do and look forward to. We invited him out for a drink a few times but he did not like going out in the evenings. He went down hill mentally in covid when he was unable to get out and about and he sadly died not long afte lock down ended.

I feel sad that some people on this thread would be judging him.

Apparently this is not weird in spoons, it would be weird if they were all sat there with coffee or orange juice for breakfast

Imbrocator · 14/02/2026 13:33

Most alcoholics don’t like the feeling of disapproval or worry from others about how much they drink and when they start, but they still want the companionship. If you’re surrounded by other people who begin drinking at 8.30am then it’s normalised and unremarkable. You can have a nice time and you don’t have to confront the problem as you would if you were having breakfast with relatives/friends who had a healthy relationship with alcohol. Like others have said, the rest are possibly shift workers.
