Over the years at work I’ve gone above and beyond for clients doing things that technically weren’t part of the job we were contracted for, or getting things done faster for clients when really we didn’t have to, and most people are grateful but a minority end up complaining that the thing I’ve done for them that I didn’t have to wasn’t good enough, or wasn’t fast enough - to be clear there was never a problem with the things I’ve done, they were just unpleasant people who would find a problem with anything. So I’ve made a decision that I will no longer do anything that isn’t specifically part of the job I’ve been contracted to do, even if it would be no effort for me to go the extra mile, I just won’t.

The ones that appreciate it and thank you and it gives you a good reputation among, then maybe still do it. Don't do it for anyone who either hasn't noticed or says bits of it are wrong/are ungrateful etc.
If it's a case if new clients coming through on a regular basis and the appreciative ones have all gone you may as well just fully stop.

I think you can be flexible. There’s a person I work I do absolutely nothing but the bare minimum for because he’s a lazy, pompous dick who will try and get you do everything for him.

Whereas his colleague is so helpful, grateful and generally lovely that I always go out of my way to do things for. Because it would be mutual.

I agree. I’ve started doing something similar. I. Setting the bar lower for all customers. I’m not incentivised or paid more if I do a good job or not. I have a standard, which is high in itself, but any extra is a no from now on.
