I am currently using my iPhone 14 pro for my photography, but I’m hoping to upgrade to a Canon 1300D in the next couple of days, but I would like to know first if people think I have potential? I don’t want to waste a couple of hundred if I am delusional about my skills!

They are nice photos, but as pp said try to avoid cluttered backgrounds. See if you can get close ups of him which capture the light in his eyes. This is one I took on my phone of DB’s Labrador, sadly no longer with us.

Didn't you post before and get really pissy when offered constructive feedback?

BillieWiper · 13/02/2026 14:30

They look really good. A couple I could believe were professional. Idk anything about how or why a photo looks professional but they look really pleasing and composed well. Maybe your subject is very patient? 😁

Definitely get the camera.

Aah, beautiful. ❤️

I.mean they add to the composition not that they're particularly lovely cars.😆

I was wondering about that!

OriginalUsername2 · 13/02/2026 15:23

I see you understand the rule of thirds, that’s about as far as my photography knowledge goes! They’re lovely. Enjoy your new camera!

BitOutOfPractice · 13/02/2026 15:23

I think the first one is great because it’s real and I like the messy, out of focus background. I think it looks very, erm, I dunno, contemporary. I personally prefer that to something that looks very staged and I like the different focus levels on it.

I think you’d get a lot out of a photography course op if you haven’t done one. When you get your new camera.

"Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong" - W.R. Purche.

It's true!! 😁

Dollymylove · 13/02/2026 15:48

I dont know anything about photographic skills. I cant comment mainly because I was too busy admiring that very handsome dog 🥰🥰

Sminty2 · 13/02/2026 16:29

I particularly like the second one, dog sitting in front of water.

His head is turned the same direction as the grass heads are blowing. It’s a nice movement echo.

As I said up post they are good considering they are taken on a phone, but as you asked for it, here is some hopefully constructive feedback. (Please don't be disheartened I'm being 100% honest, and it's just my taste / opinion)

Dog with Cars in background
I like the stance of the dog, and the leading line of the wet path and the colour tones. I don't like the background, and the right hand side of the dogs face is a little black crushed which has lost detail. (not that you could do much about it with a phone, unless you had a reflector or flash). I can also just smell a hint of wet lab!

Dog on Riverbank, head turned
I like the composition, but image looks under exposed, and distractingly not straight.

Dog with stick on the ground, log grass in the background
Generally like the composition, like the stick, but find the dog's position a little odd as it looks like his tail has been docked.

Dog looking to camera, water behind
Probably my favourite, like the composition, the stick and the level horizon. but looks under exposed / crushed, bit soft on the dog's face, and the post with the "5" is distracting.

Once you have your DSLR, the best tip I can give is be brutal on your evaluation and culling, don’t be worried if you shoot all day and have nothing worth keeping.
