To have “childish” hobbies?

Littleanchor · 13/02/2026 12:23

I am 32 and I still play the sims occasionally and I love to colour. I have an assortment of different colouring pens and books and find it very relaxing to switch my mind off and do some colouring. Is this really pathetic?

They’re not my only hobbies. I also like to swim and read and go to shows and concerts, and we don’t have children so spend a lot of weekends exploring new places etc. but I almost feel ashamed of playing computer games and colouring in… my friends and colleagues are at home raising children and I’m sat colouring haha. Does anyone else have hobbies or interests that would be perceived as childish?

I thought colouring was a ‘thing’ - loads of books for adults on Amazon, and it’s more sophisticated now with shading. I’ve always liked it, so what anyone else thinks doesn’t bother me.

RoniPepper · 14/02/2026 21:53

I'm 48 and I love colouring. I also have a collection of cuddly toys🙂

WashingQueen16 · 14/02/2026 21:58

Im in my 40's and I like colouring.
I have my own book & pens, would maybe let the kids have a go now they are older teens and won't ruin them lol.

I also love Pokemon Go & can be found going for Pokewalks alone or with other adults I met in town that also play. Get some funny looks from other people though but I don't care. The kids don't play like they used to so won't go walking with me any more.

I like crafts too - card making, scrap booking, sticking, glueing, trying new crafts.

I know loads of adults that play various computer games.

I think whatever helps you unwind. I like things that with little or no thinking involved, often creative stuff, as I use a lot of brain power at work.

MauveLibrary · 14/02/2026 22:13

If you have a hobby that you love and you arent hurting anyone by doing it then absolutely crack on with whatever makes you happy. I love gaming, crocheting, adult colouring and reading. These things bring me joy and help me unwind. Nothing better than curling up with a cup of tea and a good book on the kindle or gently and calmly crocheting a blanket while I have Netflix on or listening to an audiobook while I do some adult colouring for mindfulness. I love playing some of the relaxing platform or open world games on the Switch. With the world feeling like such a frightening and depressing place its important to do things that make us all happy and relaxed.

I have just realised another hobby of mine that resurfaced from childhood- a dolls house.
That is lots of fun and quite addictive!

I’m 40, have a DD and I play Call of Duty, build miniature kits and I’ve just started learning electric guitar - YOLO, do you

Pryceosh1987 · 15/02/2026 00:41

Colouring is good, i stopped in my early teens doing that though. I used to draw things with my brothers and colour them in. A hobby is a hobby, its nothing to be ashamed of.

I saw a post on Instagram only yesterday from someone wearing one of those Oura rings and it showed how high their stress levels were when watching tv against how low they went when they were colouring in their colouring books. It seems to reset their brains and helps them relax.
Anyway, yanbu to enjoy your hobby. I love crochet, knitting, gardening and cross stitching and have done most of these things since my mid 20s, age is not a determiner of what hobby is acceptable. My dh is mid 50s and still loves pc gaming, something I have never got into, although I do enjoy free puzzle games on my phone

I have noticed this too. Whenever I draw, colour, make any sort of art, I feel so relaxed.

I think it applies to any sort of craft where your attention move to the activity.

Do you mind if I ask you about the instagram account which posted this?

My workplace puts out colouring books and pens for people to use. Ditto with origami sheets and crosswords, word search, suduko etc. It's actively encouraged to pick an activity and have a bit of down time.

what kind of workplace is that? its very good! I had psychosis from stress at work

MIAMNER · 15/02/2026 09:41

I wasted far too many years abstaining from hobbies because they weren’t cool enough. Now I sew and wear historical costumes. It’s adult dress-up and I love it!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/02/2026 10:29

I did colouring when I was anxious. I read a lot now.

Muddyevil · 15/02/2026 15:54

I read, play modern boardgames, play cozy grove on switch and I collect Disney traditions. I like the fact that my hobbies let me reignite that childish wonder. I've also done a lot of crafting, gardening, embroidery etc in the past. Sometimes I think my hobby is collecting hobbies lol

Oooh I was a medieval reenactor for 25 years! Now I wanna go to a fancy book ball and dress up like a high Fae or woodland witch lol 😅

Libertoo · 14/02/2026 19:11

Don’t worry about it - I’m 36 and love board games and graphic novels as well as the more “normal” things like going to the beach, hiking etc. The ladies in the office looked at me like I had two heads when we were discussing free time 😂

You sound cool as in my eyes! Off to a comic con with youngest next month. Don't watch anime much anymore but still love it! Will prob come home with lots of geeky merch. Also a boardgamer here...ttrpgs, deck builders or run of the mill modern board games? I work with 2 older ladies and one looks at me like I'm 6 sometimes and I care not lol

TheGirlWhoLived · 15/02/2026 16:09

My hobbies are that of a 14 year old (I am a late 30’s mum of three!)

I play sims, animal crossing, various other computer games. I watch YouTube ABOUT these games, I read literary RPG books, I like to sticker, colour and colour/make my own journal, and I still manage to live a fulfilled life 😊

housemaus · 15/02/2026 16:23

I'm mid-30s and I play games (including the Sims - haven't played it in ages though, might redowload!), read and write fanfiction, and play D&D... I don't think they're childish!

(As a PP pointed out though, while it's lovely that this thread has shown plenty of people like gaming, if you mention on here that a man likes gaming it gets a very different crowd responding to say it's childish and ridiculous!)

NewBrightonEel · 15/02/2026 17:09

So many people I have come across just sit glued to the TV all day - if there's nothing on they will watch utter rubbish rather than get up and do something else - better a "childish" hobby than that (nothing wrong with your hobbies OP - we love The Sims in our house)

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/02/2026 17:15

I'm 58 and I play video games and stream on Twitch. 🤷‍♂️

PersephonePomegranate · 15/02/2026 17:23

Do what you love! Free time is so limited, use it doing something that makes you happy.

JaneGrint · 15/02/2026 17:25

I’m more than a decade older than you and I still play the Sims. I was playing it last night after the DC went to bed.
One good thing about getting older is that I care far less about whether other people think it’s an unsuitable hobby for an adult!

i don’t do colouring in, but if all the adult colouring books out there are anything to go by, you’re far from the only adult to enjoy that.

Those are actually all creative hobbies and linked to the same core theme of story telling.

Colouring in is also a creative hobby. Nothing wrong with any of those things!

I have two questions that decide pretty much everything in my life.

Is it hurting anyone else?
Does it make me happy?

If the answers are no and yes respectively, it's all good.

Im 59 and find colouring very therapeutic. Nothing wrong with that.

Bravemama · 15/02/2026 17:35

This is a lovely thread ✨️ Im not sure if this counts or not but I do feel childish about how much a look forward to my birthday every year. It doesnt have to be anything like a big party with loads of friends and big expense but if I wake up and DH has a card ready, bouquet and chocolates and I get to stroll a garden centre then Im thrilled ☺️

I have do the same thing! I colour on my tablet and i love playing the sims! there is nothing to be ashamed about. You are allowed to have interests outside of your children, sometimes its the only way we keep sane. My daughter also loves to join me when i play the sims and its one of the mutual things we can do together that doesnt cause me pain (i have a thread on here more about that ) and we love doing it, shes not 100% into it all the time but when she wants to have a go we have some fun...im not sure how old your kids are but this could be something you do together...colouring can be the same too.

Look i cant tell you how to feel but can we honestly say that the sims is a childish game? if youu think about it what child should know really what woohoo is a how to get married and pay bills with a house and jobs...honey its not childish at all its an escape from the real world where when we have had enough of whatever is happening we can turn it off. we can control everything in the game that we cant in real life and honestly its cathardic personally.

I dont know if this app has messaging but i am fully here if you would like to chat more or even sims and colouring ideas <3
Please dont judge yourself for finding something that is safe, relatively cheap and makes you happy <3
