To have “childish” hobbies?

I am 32 and I still play the sims occasionally and I love to colour. I have an assortment of different colouring pens and books and find it very relaxing to switch my mind off and do some colouring. Is this really pathetic?

They’re not my only hobbies. I also like to swim and read and go to shows and concerts, and we don’t have children so spend a lot of weekends exploring new places etc. but I almost feel ashamed of playing computer games and colouring in… my friends and colleagues are at home raising children and I’m sat colouring haha. Does anyone else have hobbies or interests that would be perceived as childish?

It s a lovely thing to have a hobby. Really important I think. Much better than mindless scrolling!
I recently bought myself a sticker book- because it was all about fashion history which I love! And I’m not their target age range at all :)

May I ask where you got this please? Would love some adult sticker books!

Ilovelurchers · 13/02/2026 19:42

I think some of my tastes are quite juvenile too - I am close to my teenage daughter, and there are certain shows I really enjoy watching with her, that I am sure are aimed at people a lot younger than me. There is even an anime series I love to read, and I like and purchase merchandise connected to that series, very much in the manner of a teenager.....

I also love plushies! One of the first things I did when I left my last partner was start a little collection of them.... I have about 10 now! DD bought me some of them and I especially love those.....

Even my more "adult" interests aren't particularly high brow. I love soap operas (Emmerdale and Corrie); horror films; reading crime fiction that is absolute trash.....

And why not? I work hard in a challenging job, and I feel like my down time is my own, to do what I will with.....

So you crack on OP! Do what makes you happy.

Well- it was just a children’s one from Waterstones!
We may have discovered a gap in the market!

I’ve been saying this for years! I thought you’d cracked the case!

Who doesn’t like The Sims?! I used to love hobbies until my job got crazy and my kids sucked the life out of me! I am still trying ti get back to them.

UltraAlox5 · 13/02/2026 20:00

Mum of boys here and played on their Fortnite after they went to bed with a v large glass on wine last night, perfect 😆

UltraAlox5 · 13/02/2026 20:01

Oh and won a battle Royale FYI

Ophy83 · 13/02/2026 20:04

I love the Sims. Haven't played it in ages but when I was doing my masters it was my treat - I would set myself a study goal and when I'd done it I got to play Sims for an hour. I'm tempted to get back into it!

GymBergerac · 13/02/2026 20:09

If you hadn't said you had no children, I would have thought you might be my DD! ❤️ A hobby can be anything you do that brings you enjoyment in your spare time, regardless of whether it's something typical "adult" or not. If you enjoy what you do, that's all that matters. I enjoy colouring and jigsaws, I have a 60 year old colleague who enjoys playing F1 video games, and I have a friend who enjoys roller skating. Fun has no age limit!

ImPamDoove · 13/02/2026 20:12

My son’s gf is 20 and she enjoys colouring in. So what if it’s childish? She’s mature in general, she just enjoys it.

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 13/02/2026 20:15

I love colouring and in 41!
It was my favourite thing to do when babysitting my nephew!
When I was 24 I was stuck in hospital for a month, my mum bought me a colouring book, it was the only think that kept my focus for more then 5mins.
A friend bought me a swearing colouring book when I broke my foot a few years ago, and I got back into it during covid.
It chills me out, empties my mind and I can pick it up and put it down as I want to, unlike other hobbies with expensive kit or time tables you cant miss.

Oh im also a dab hand at Tetris!!

Do you and sod anyone else is what i say.

BusMumsHoliday · 13/02/2026 20:32

I write fanfiction which is something I think you're supposed to grow out of at about 17. Tried "proper" creative writing and it doesn't work the same.

Also, thanks to the PP who mentioned the little house sticker sets. They look awesome and I've just ordered some.

Sunsetseascape · 13/02/2026 20:47

I don’t play sims anymore but I do have an Xbox, switch 1, switch 2 and Wii (and an old DS and even my N64 somewhere!)

I go through phases but at the moment I’m playing a lot of switch!

Lolamills · 13/02/2026 20:47

We are the same age and I wish I had a computer to play the sims on. Absolute banger of a game. I don’t think it’s childish. I am jealous!

dottiedodah · 13/02/2026 20:54

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 13/02/2026 20:55

My house is full of Lego and only some of it belongs to my kids 😂

I need to start playing Sims again

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/02/2026 20:58

I run a watchtower in a zombie apocalypse whilst I'm waiting for reports to churn for analysis then go and fight it out with other watchtowers from different factions at the weekend.

The reason I don't actually do 'proper' gaming is that I know I'd lose days to it, whereas this, I can put down and get on with work/sleep/dinner any time I'm not actually fending off a siege.

There are players in the faction aged from 18 to about 76, from all over the world (works well that way as there is always somebody online in case of attack or if you've been rudely awakened by the sodding cat because he doesn't understand it's a Saturday and there's a squirrel in the garden).

I have two questions that decide pretty much everything in my life.

Is it hurting anyone else?
Does it make me happy?

If the answers are no and yes respectively, it's all good.

This ! 🙂

TurquoiseDress · 13/02/2026 21:26

YANBU!

I love a good old colouring in session!

Especially on my own for an hour or so…also like doing it with my 7 year old but different characters to my usual books

TurquoiseDress · 13/02/2026 21:28

Oh and I really love doing Lego still!

And I’m the other side of 45

My 12 year old loves Lego too

I’ve got to stop myself buying another Lego flower set!

MyBestThing · 13/02/2026 21:34

Lovely reading about all these gentle hobbies. I was never interested in colouring as a child but I imagine it's therapeutic.
I'd like to say mine are reading and crochet but truthfully I spend more time scrolling.
I did for a few years play farming games. I could spend hours on Hayday or others. I always felt guilty for wasting time and eventually went cold turkey and gave them up.

Shame I can't be as disciplined about scrolling.

ChocolateHobbit · 13/02/2026 21:34

Who gives a crap. I played World of Warcraft heavily through my 20s and early 30s. It never harmed anyone, apart from myself.
My back is in ruins as a result 🤣.
