To have “childish” hobbies?

Littleanchor · 13/02/2026 12:23

I am 32 and I still play the sims occasionally and I love to colour. I have an assortment of different colouring pens and books and find it very relaxing to switch my mind off and do some colouring. Is this really pathetic?

They’re not my only hobbies. I also like to swim and read and go to shows and concerts, and we don’t have children so spend a lot of weekends exploring new places etc. but I almost feel ashamed of playing computer games and colouring in… my friends and colleagues are at home raising children and I’m sat colouring haha. Does anyone else have hobbies or interests that would be perceived as childish?

I run a watchtower in a zombie apocalypse whilst I'm waiting for reports to churn for analysis then go and fight it out with other watchtowers from different factions at the weekend.

The reason I don't actually do 'proper' gaming is that I know I'd lose days to it, whereas this, I can put down and get on with work/sleep/dinner any time I'm not actually fending off a siege.

There are players in the faction aged from 18 to about 76, from all over the world (works well that way as there is always somebody online in case of attack or if you've been rudely awakened by the sodding cat because he doesn't understand it's a Saturday and there's a squirrel in the garden).

I love the sound of this. What game is it?
I used to belong to a group of MNers with a collective on Hayday. Always someone online to help with tasks.
I've heard of Sims but don't know what it is?

SecondStarOnTheRight · 13/02/2026 21:56

Are you me??

Ive just bought myself a new computer in the hope of getting into Sims 4, haven't played it in so long, but trying it again. Always preferred the open world of Sims 3.

Endofyear · 13/02/2026 21:57

I play candy crush to relax - my adult kids laugh at me, I don't care! Whatever works for you is nobody else's business 🤷‍♀️ when my kids were young, I used to play tomb raider on their games console when they were in bed 😂 I got quite good at it!

You've done it now. Lego is ridiculously addictive.
My dd bought me a small kit for Christmas about 4 years ago. I now have no room left for any more. And I'm 68 next week. I do have space for 1 more if I shuffle stuff about but it will need to be a specific size.
I also love colouring in.

Grins, your story made me laugh! Cheers!
Yes, since the cat I have bought him a London bus (this is something he deals with at work), another cat for him and a camera for me. I will let him do them all though, he so enjoys it.

Usernamenotav · 13/02/2026 23:44

Not pathetic in the slightest! I'd die to have time to colour and play sims 🤣

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 13/02/2026 23:48

I am 34 and I played The Sims a few days ago for the first time in years and years. Found it on an old laptop. I ended up playing it for 5 hours hahahaha

MongoIsAppalled · 14/02/2026 06:50

Ive spend t the last week building a rainbow road on sims after seeing it on tiktok with 7 3 storey houses on a plot each a different colour. I flit between sims and 2 other games. Ive played sims since the first game. I also love drawing and colouring books. Im in my mid-40's. Its absolutely a normal hobby.

HaloDolly · 14/02/2026 07:23

I’m mid 50’s and I play Roblox.

I’m the same, feels hard to take backwards step it feels like! But sims 3 was so buggy.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2026 08:19

I’m 44 and do those things apart from video games. Colouring is great!

geminicancerean · 14/02/2026 08:20

I LOVE Calm Over Chaos books and sheets but I cannot get on with the pens at all, after many many rewatches of the tutorial she had to post because everybody else had the same issue. I have a subscription to her colouring sheets because I love her ethos and style but I use Winsor and Newton Promarkers or the alcohol markers they stock in B&M - which are surprisingly good!

Alsonification · 14/02/2026 08:25

I also have some adult colouring books & I even bought some fancy markers!
I'm currently mid dollshouse renovation cos I love dollhouses & tiny things.
My son got me some Lego botanicals for Christmas & I loved them so much I’ve asked for some for my birthday next week!

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with “childish” hobbies. Who cares what anyone else thinks, as long as you’re happy & not hurting anyone, then crack on.

sunflowerdaisies · 14/02/2026 08:29

I voted YABU as I meant it in a way that you are being unreasonable to worry about your hobbies, not that your hobbies were unreasonable!

InMySpareTime · 14/02/2026 08:32

I have a colouring book that is definitely not for children. It contains swear words that are all kinds of colourful!
I make puppets and costumes for stories.
I play jigsaws
I painted a fantasy treasure map on the ceiling and a giant dragon.
I hid a load of tiny figurines around my house and I love it when people find them.
I made some model aircraft out of Meccano and hung them up so they look like they’re flying.

DH is no better, he collects railwayana and has a model railway.

ItsNotMeEither · 14/02/2026 08:33

I'm over 60. I play games on my phone, and I go to ballet and pilates. I spend a lot of time on social media for someone who isn't a teen.

Squirrelsnut · 14/02/2026 08:43

Even if they were 'childish', so what?
Enjoy your life

Alwaystired23 · 14/02/2026 08:52

Umm, if it makes you feel any better, I have 2 children and I also sit at home colouring in or building lego. I had a great set of pens and books off my husband, sister and mum for Christmas. I'm in my early 40s. I work full time, and am currently undertaking a masters. I find colouring and building lego very therapeutic. It really does help the mind to switch off in my opinion. I also love going for walks and reading. You're not hurting anyone, so enjoy!! Life is precious and you never know what is around the corner, so just do tje things that make you happy (within reason obviously 😀).

ohfook · 14/02/2026 08:55

You are my type of person. I think it’s far too easy to stop making space for joy in your life. Even a lot of people with hobbies now it seems like it has to be a productive hobby (making you money or losing weight essentially) or it’s not worth it. I actually fell into that trap recently of stopping making time for something that I enjoy because I forgot that is reason enough to do something. To find something that makes you happy and to do it just because is a fabulous thing.

I think some of my tastes are quite juvenile too - I am close to my teenage daughter, and there are certain shows I really enjoy watching with her, that I am sure are aimed at people a lot younger than me. There is even an anime series I love to read, and I like and purchase merchandise connected to that series, very much in the manner of a teenager.....

I also love plushies! One of the first things I did when I left my last partner was start a little collection of them.... I have about 10 now! DD bought me some of them and I especially love those.....

Even my more "adult" interests aren't particularly high brow. I love soap operas (Emmerdale and Corrie); horror films; reading crime fiction that is absolute trash.....

And why not? I work hard in a challenging job, and I feel like my down time is my own, to do what I will with.....

So you crack on OP! Do what makes you happy.

Ilovelurchers this is me too! I've watched a few anime with my teenage daughter and now found ones I like on my own. This wasn't available to me when I was a teenager so I'm enjoying catching up!

Life is stressful enough without having to worry about relaxing in the 'right' way. Do what works for you 😊

Sadcafe · 14/02/2026 09:33

Lots of adult colouring books on the shelves, it’s considered mindful, nothing wrong with playing computer games, making Lego or anything else if it brings you some pleasure and doesn’t hurt anyone else

DancingLions · 14/02/2026 11:56

@BatshitCrazyWoman
These are the ones I do. Sticker book
They’re Chinese and they’re cheaper on Temu I think. Which I don’t normally shop with but might try it to get some more.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/02/2026 11:59

Thank you @DancingLions

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 14/02/2026 13:40

I play Pokemon go every day. I’m 43. I also love colouring and Lego.

AfternoonTeaAddict · 14/02/2026 13:49

I wish i had a hobby. I've let so much of myself go in the past 15 years. DS1 has disabilities and I feel as if my only hobby is drinking wine after he goes to bed.

I was thinking i ought to start a jigsaw now i am not drinking. Keep my hands busy. As a child I adored riding but I can't do that now due to severe injuries sustained from riding.

I envy you OP for having something you love to do. And everyone else on the thread. I'm getting some lovely ideas, thank you all. Thanks

Dark Shelter Survival. It's just a bog standard mechanics farm/develop/fight game, lots of pay to play options but it's perfectly simple to pootle along f2p in a chilled alliance. Sometimes there can be some really weird people on servers that don't quite get the idea it's only a game and seem to have their entire sense of worth wrapped up in being the biggest/richest player, but any game that involves others is going to get people like that.
