Is twice a week at the gym good enough?

I’ve been sticking to going to the gym twice a week since the middle of last year. I usually spend at least an hour, usually more. I do a warm up on the treadmill or bike and then a full body workout using a variety of machine and some free weights. I struggle to go any more due to work and kids and on the odd week I’ve managed 3 sessions I find myself getting bored. Twice a week is still relatively enjoyable for me!

But is it actually doing any good? I don’t feel much fitter and I haven’t lost weight. Is it actually worth it?

It's always worth it, but you'd see my h better results from 3 to 4 times. You could try shorter sessions more often.

I think 3 is better but maybe you need more variety to retain interest?

I think it would just depend on how hard you push yourself once you're in there - how much are you pushing on each run, how far off failure are your reps, are you pushing for progressive overload etc.

I could have 3/4 short but hard sessions and that would have a bigger pay off (for me) than hours of low effort gym time.

For the weight loss part, thats really going to be mostly diet based so comes down to what you're eating

2 is better than nothing. Of course 3 would be better than 2, 4 would be better than 3 and so on but you’ve said due to work and dc commitments you struggle to go more so…
as for the topic of boredom, I wouldn’t go at all if I found it boring. I’m a firm believer in finding a hobby you love and will stick to. For me that’s open water cold swimming (all year round, it’s less cold in the summer but it’s never warm!) reformer Pilates and the gym. I love all of them and make time to go and do one of them every day.
2 is better than 1 and 1 is better than none.
Just keep at it and vary what you do there to keep it a bit more interesting and possibly find a few things you really enjoy.

Well you won’t usually lose weight with gym / exercise

weight training twice a week is good and enough of that to be really useful for your future health

probably need at least one more session - a good walk or swim , or a class you enjoy rather than more of the same

you are way ahead of most of the population already !

Could you look at mixing it up if you want to do a third session? Maybe look for a class or similar?
