To be madly in love with my pet

Homeiswherethedogsare · 12/02/2026 08:04

Wanted pets all my life but wasn’t allowed as a kid and lived abroad after uni for a long time which means I have only just recently been able to become a pet owner.
My cat has improved my life so much. She gives me so much love and company, she makes us all laugh as she is so funny and silly, we couldn’t imagine not having her. I sometimes stop to look at her and sm mesmerised by her beauty and cannot believe we have this gorgeous animal as part of our family.
She has been a great addition for DD too, she loves her to bits.

Am I ott to think she has improved our lifeand to never want to be petless again?

Pets can bring you a lot of joy. My dog walks helped me after a beareavement, as he had to be walked in the fresh air and it got me moving outside. 🐕
He is a source of comfort and is a member of our family 💕
Edited to say, you are deffo not OTT 😇

LittleBird74 · 12/02/2026 08:06

Not unreasonable! Your cat is lucky to have such a loving home full of people that love her, not all cats are so lucky.
Im also beyond obsessed with my dog, as is my teen son. We couldn’t live without him and he’s our absolute world. He’s the best thing on earth and so so precious to us.

My family always wanted a dog, me I was 50/50 so we waited until I retired at 58 before getting a border collie, a bread my DH has always wanted. He’s 7 now and we laugh at him, he gets us out everyday whatever the weather, helped my DH recover from a heart attack and operation. I love him, but my DH is seriously in love with him. If he had to choose between myself and the dog, I don’t stand my chances.

Ahahah yes it should! My username is linked to something else, an old story.
But I also absolutely adore dogs and infact used to be more of a dog person, then I discovered cats and I am now obsessed with them too.
Would love a dog one day but it’s not the right time for us for many reasons

I've always enjoyed having cats: they're so sleek, and sophisticated, but yes very silly also!

But having our first dog was something else. He was so handsome, intelligent and affectionate, and he transformed my life and health. There's somehow a closer level of communication and understanding with dogs, too.

Lost him to cancer last year. Heart still broken 😞

You are being unreasonable for not sharing a photo...

Pets enrich our lives. I utterly love our basset hound he makes me laugh every day and life is just better with him in it.

Basset hound is such an amazing dog, I love them!!! What are they like personality-wise?

To all of you who have dogs: do you all have flexible jobs or work from home a lot? Main thing stopping us is that we are all out all day at least 3 times a week and also more difficult to manage when we are away

My huge cat has just jumped on my chest , sat up straight and is gazing down on me benignly. We both agree.

Dollymylove · 12/02/2026 08:26

I hear you OP. My cat is the best cat in the universe and is treated like (and acts like) an emperor.
Not for nothing did the ancient Egyptians worship them 😆😆

I have a very flexible and worth her weight in gold dog walker

I WFH 2 days a week, has a dog walker the other days. I also work just round the corner so am home every lunchtime and DS is back from school around 3.30pm. He occasionally goes to a daycare if we’ll be out all day.

Yes, I work from home fully remote and DH is on permanent late shifts and average four day week. I resisted getting a dog for years until I had a manager that let me go hybrid and work from home during summer (we all did regardless of pets). Then I moved to a remote role. We do have a retired greyhound and although they dont need lots of exercise ours has a 1.5 to 2 hr walk everyday which he adores. He loves sniffing and meeting others its all so enriching for him. He deserves it in his retirement ...and my sofa.

Mirrorxxx · 12/02/2026 08:31

Not at all. I love my dog more than I can describe.

Mirrorxxx · 12/02/2026 08:31

And he goes to doggy daycare the days we work in the office.

I wfh at least 2 or 3 days a week. Have a flexible dog walker as well. Holidays are dog friendly and they come too.

askmenothing · 12/02/2026 08:34

Genuinely think I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my dog. There were days I only got out of bed to let him out or take him for a walk. He got me through lockdown. I love him sooo much! It helps he is the goodest of all the good boys ❤️
The whole family will be a wreck when we loose him.

CinnamonBuns67 · 12/02/2026 08:41

I do love my cat, I've had her almost 11 years (shes almost 13 as she was 2 when I got her) and she is the best. I like her more than I like nearly all people.

WoooMumma · 12/02/2026 08:46

I absolutely adore my cat. And all cats in fact 😆 I love to sit mindfully just stroking and smelling and admiring her 😍 I love that she chooses to stay and live here when she could go anywhere!

SusanChurchouse · 12/02/2026 08:49

I think I must be missing a gene or something as I haven’t developed any kind of affection to my cat. Got him in the aftermath of my mum dying, though we’d talked about getting a cat for years. Got a rescue as I believe that’s the right thing to do and he’s just ‘there’. He’s well cared for but I’m not sure I’d miss him if he were gone, and I’m not sure I’ll get another cat even though I adore them.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2026 08:51

My main source of joy is dog cuddling. It’s good for them and me.

We are the same as you (out of the house 3 days a week). On those days either me or DH give the dogs a big walk before we leave for the day and then we have a dog walker come in the early afternoon (1-2ish) to take them out for an hour 😊We get home around 6ish and they're always fast asleep when we walk through the door (then they get another small walk before bedtime to go to the toilet).

Same here. Plus a brilliant boarder who are dogs go to when we're on holiday. They're both amazing and the dogs love them 😊
