He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.

He was diagnosed with colorectal cancer last year.

not to be mean, at all, but I thought he had already passed? I wonder who I was thinking of.

That's really sad. I saw the reunion thing that he couldn't attend but his wife and kids.

I'm gutted, he seemed like such a lovely man. Some of their poor children are still so young, I think the youngest is only 3.

Anybody who is a fan should watch Don't Trust The B In Apartment 23, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself. He was absolutely brilliant in it.

This flashed up on my screen from TMZ before it had even hit Wiki. I was hoping for a few minutes it was wrong but already pretty sure it wasn't. His wife posted a lovely tribute to his Insta page.

Dawson's creek was such a 'moment' from my late teens. Was genuinely saddened (though not surprised) by the news tonight. Think his youngest child is about 4 yo.

Don't know too much about James Van Der Beek apart from that he seemed from SM to be a genuinely nice guy, but loved Dawson Leery! 6 children though, and fundraising for treatment? Always assume famous actors are well off but obviously not, all best wishes to his family

Sad that he had financial pressure at the most difficult time. His wife started a Go Fund Me, too.

His medical insurance lapsed as he wasn't working enough. He wasn't working enough as he was ill. A horrible catch 22 situation. Delay, deny, defend

It’s so sad but sadly when he got diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer you knew it was over. He looked horrific the last time he was seen so it was obvious it wouldn’t be long sadly. More and more younger people are getting diagnosed with this and it’s scary .

So sad...I was a teenager watching Dawsons Creek.
He's the same age as me.
