Fevers for 3 weeks!

AIBU to think this illness has gone on WAY too long??

Honestly don’t know if I need perspective or a reality check. My 16-month-old has basically had on/off temps for nearly 3 weeks now and I’m losing the will.

He started with what doctors said was a viral thing – loads of snot, sore tonsils, high temps etc. Chest checked and clear. At one point antibiotics were tried but then another doctor said likely viral so stopped them.

Since then it’s been this weird pattern where he’ll be totally fine and acting normal with a normal temperature for ages… then randomly spike to about 38-38.7 again. Today he’s ridiculously bunged up in his face and temp went back up but he’s running around playing and eating like nothing’s wrong. Temps went over 40 at some points but not at the minute he’s been checked 3 times by a doctor.

He hasn’t even been at nursery or mixing with other kids so I don’t get how it’s dragging on. Nursery also won’t take him with a fever so we’re stuck at home indefinitely which is stressing me out more.

Doctors aren’t concerned because he looks well in himself, but nearly 3 weeks of this feels excessive to me??
AIBU to think something must be getting missed or is this just standard toddler immune system chaos and I need to chill?

Sounds stressful. Are you letting the fever do it's job, or always bringing it down with Calpol?

What's the actual pattern been over three weeks - you say his temperature has been normal for 'ages' before going up again. Is that hours, days...?

We had something going on a while like this a few months ago (DD is 2). In the end, the doctor gave a week of amoxicillin and could be a coincidence but she did get better after that. Even though they thought her chest sounded clear and it was likely to be viral. I think maybe she did have a bit of an infection somewhere.

Calpol isn’t touching it for some reason so using nurofen. Let it do its job for a few hours but then he seems to get uncomfortable

Edited

It’s essentially been high more than it’s been normal- getting hours of normal temp and then it’s back up again. They tried him on amoxicillin and it made no difference, so confused as to what’s going on just seems like an age!
