Is it too early for hot weather in the Algarve. Mid April. Anyone been.
Thanks.

Weather might be nice enough (but not hot hot), but the sea will be freezing.

letshavetea · 10/02/2026 15:50

I’d book Madeira instead. I’ve just looked and at the moment the temp is 19 degrees!

It's the same temp in northern Spain at the moment...

DreadPirateLucy · 10/02/2026 15:53

We go every April - in the daytime it’s warm enough to stroll around in t shirt and shorts, but it’s not baking. Sea will be freezing and you’ll prob want to have a heated swimming pool.

Auroraloves · 10/02/2026 15:53

I’ve been at the end of April. There was one day I could wear a bikini, the rest were warm but not hot.

JengaCupboard · 10/02/2026 15:54

I have been the first week of May lots of times, so about 2 weeks out, and it's generally been glorious - you would need a sleeve at night but low-mid 20's in the day, and in full sun it's very pleasant. The sea is baltic but our block has a heated pool which is tolerable! It will be quiet though - some places may not be open/open later in the evening yet, and sun beds on the beaches probably won't be open yet either. Depends what you want really - we love early season.

user2848502016 · 10/02/2026 16:03

I would because it will be lovely exploring weather - sunny and warm but not too hot! The sea will be cold but a heated pool would be nice, or book somewhere with an indoor pool.
If you want reliably hot in April you’d have to go to the Canaries or long haul

Boots89 · 10/02/2026 16:12

I'm not sure about April but I went in September we travelled to a few places and we went to a place called Evora and it was 36 degrees boiling!!

Delatron · 10/02/2026 16:14

It won’t be hot. Might get lucky and it will be pleasant but chilly at night and not warm enough to sunbathe/swim in pools etc.

I went in July once and it wasn’t particularly hot! It can get very windy!

For reliable heat in April like someone said - you need canaries or long haul.

TheLeadbetterLife · 10/02/2026 16:18

I live there, it won't be hot, but it will be very warm. If you like walking and spectacular wildflowers, April is the perfect month to go. Might rain though (as if we needed more of that...). Summer, and dry weather, starts in May.

firstofallimadelight · 10/02/2026 16:54

We did Portugal in the first two weeks of April a few years ago it was 18-20 degrees and cool at night. So warm enough to walk round in a t shirt but not bikini/pool weather and you need coat at night.

Netcurtainnelly · 10/02/2026 17:07

Is Malta and Cyprus the same.
Been to the Canaries quite a lot?

dep on how warm you want and how you feel about rain, no guarantees when it comes to weather but less so in April than in June. Sea is cold even in September so definitely look for a heated pool

hellswelshy · 10/02/2026 17:10

I'm going in April! Previous visits have been in May, so I'm aware that it won't be as warm but I'm okay with that. As long as I get a bit of sunshine and do some walking, I'm happy. Quite excited to see the Algarve at a different time of year in fact 😄

The sea is freezing on the Algarve in August ime.

HappiestSleeping · 10/02/2026 17:13

Keep an eye on flooding @Netcurtainnelly I was planning Lisbon in March, but most of the places I want to go are suffering. I am hoping it will have subsided by then.

Malta will be warmer sea temperatures as it is the Med, not the Atlantic but it will still be cooler.

Then again, the Maltese islands have history pre dating the pyramids by over 1000 years.

InveterateWineDrinker · 10/02/2026 17:13

Portugal is a funny place for weather in April - it is extremely unpredictable. You can have clear skies and warm sun, but also get a week of non-stop rain. Even if it's hot in the sun, it'll cool down rapidly on an evening.

They've had one of the worst winters - storm after storm, rain/floods - in living memory so far this year, and last winter/spring in the Algarve was also extremely wet and miserable until mid May, when it went almost straight to mid-30s heatwave conditions.

Delatron · 10/02/2026 17:17

I honestly don’t think anywhere in Europe (apart from Canaries as they’re close to Africa) is reliably hot in April. Unless you get a random heatwave.

The sea in Portugal was freezing when we went in July.

Morocco would be warmer? Or Egypt?

Cyprus is not "summer holiday" weather in April. Nowhere on the Med is very suitable for a beach holiday before the middle of May. It depends on what you want to do. If you want to swim, you need to travel further afield.

I’d book Madeira instead. I’ve just looked and at the moment the temp is 19 degrees!

I went to Madeira the last week of April 2024 and it was certainly not sitting by the pool hot apart from a couple of hours a day. Warm mostly, with a day when it was cold and drizzly.

Portugal (near Faro) the same week last year was similar.

boredwfh · 10/02/2026 17:19

We booked last year for Easter and it was very cold- 16-17c and not sunbathing weather. Lots of showers.
I wouldn’t risk it again. I think we were unlucky as the locals all said it was coldest spring they’d had in years and typically the week after was mid 20’s.
