ASMR

AIBU to hate ASMR, all of it, the whispers, tapping finger nails on things, pouring liquids, white noise the lot.

It gives me the rage. Fair enough I'm ASD if that's anything to do with it. I don't see the appeal to it at all. Even if someone else in the room is watching it I feel my jaw set.

So tell me any other ASMR haters out there?

My youngest ND granddaughter finds it relaxing. I can't stand it. The crunching particularly gets to me. I've never understood why some people find having a fountain etc in their garden therapeutic. Don't start me on windchimes.

DramaAlpaca · 10/02/2026 00:37

Yes, me. I can't bear it. I probably have misphonia and almost certainly have ADHD. I have a physical reaction to ASMR; other people find it calming, I want to get as far away from it as I can.

Fountains and windchimes? Oh god, no. Horrible.

Arlanymor · 10/02/2026 00:37

I think I dislike it because by its nature it’s performative. So the fakery gets on my nerves. There is enough normal noise in the world!

What’s ASMR?

What’s ASMR?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a calming, pleasurable, tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the neck and spine in response to specific audio-visual triggers like whispering, tapping, or gentle personal attention. It is used for relaxation, sleep aid, and stress relief.

I can't stand it myself. Especially the whole tapping everything with long nails. It makes me cringe and feel angry. My little one seems to love it for god knows what reason 😭

Doingtheboxerbeat · 10/02/2026 01:02

You are absolutely in good company but there are some very wrong people who love this, as was pointed out to me on tiktok when I asked why so many eat on their videos 😖.
I pointed out that eating would put as many people off as would attract, so it just seemed like a risky strategy. To each their own.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/02/2026 07:10

omg it’s the worst thing on earth! Absolutely hate it 😂

GinaXExperience · 10/02/2026 07:27

Does anyone else get the tingling sort of sensation but strongly dislike it?
I used to get it really strongly when I was a kid (funny enough I don’t as an adult).
But my experience was that it was horrible.
Particularly the sound of running a finger along the teeth of a comb (shudder, even just at the memory).

HouseReTurn · 10/02/2026 07:38

I do like ASMR but the ones with big pauses and elongated word are annoying, whispering is bloody creepy along with rubber gloves and gynae exams (wft?).
Normal speech ones help me relax and fall asleep, just like guided meditation, after about 5 mins I have no idea what goes on in most of the videos.

TWANG 😂

HarryVanderspeigle · 10/02/2026 07:46

Hate it, hate it, hate it!

DS tried to show me on my youtube once, but a lot of thr videos seemed to have a sexy lady and a microphone, it felt almost porn like. Sets my teeth on edge just thinking of it. Never again!

Thank you - that’s a new one on me! I think I can see how some would find it soothing, but I’m not sure it would work for me.

Had no idea what ASMR was until this thread, but even reading about running a finger along a comb or tapping for extended periods with nails makes my skin crawl and the hair stand up on the back of my neck… not pleasantly. I am AuDHD [diagnosed] though.

StrawberrySquash · 10/02/2026 08:46

It's doubly annoying because it takes things that should be nice, like the glug of wine being poured from a bottle, and ruins them.

Oh I HATE stuff like that

Hoardasurass · 10/02/2026 08:56

I have asd and misphonia and tbh ASMR makes me really angry, its a visceral reaction where I want to smash anything thats playing videos or sound recordings of it, I have the same reaction to anyone repeatedly tapping (no I dont smash things but I leave or if I cant tell whoever is doing/playing it to stop/turn it off)

B1anche · 10/02/2026 08:56

I didn't know there was a name for this. I see recipe videos that involve so much tapping, crunching, gurgling, chinking, snapping etc, I cannot bear it and have to switch off. Even a video advertising a bag with overly loud zipping and rustling. It literally makes my whole body hurt to hear it.

Oh god I used to work with someone who would regularly drum her fake nails on her desk. I would've happily gone to prison if it meant I didn't have to listen to her any more. Thankfully she left (probs because of the angry vibes from me).

I must admit that I very quietly (so only the offender heard) threaten to snap the fingers of 1 colleague who wouldn't stop doing that on my desk everytime she wanted to talk to me after weeks of telling her to stop, having management tell her to stop and walking away whenever she started doing it. I guess I'm looked serious enough that she believed me because she never tapped her nails on anything at work again. Not my finest moment nor something im proud of but it worked
