To think quality furnishings can last a lifetime?

DP and I are very slowly fitting out our first home together. We are careful with what we buy and make sure it’s all high quality. Solid wood antiques or 60s furniture, english made sofas. solid brass lamps, original paintings. The idea is that these items will either last us a lifetime or will hold a good amount of value if we needed to sell them on.

I think to my granny’s house that she built in the 70s and most things were from then and looked good even in 2010. Whereas my mum is asking us if why we don’t just do a big ikea shop.

We are still
using the “quality furnishings” my parents bought in the 1970s. They are so old they are now fashionable “mid century”
items - dining table and chairs, coffee table, side board etc. mostly GPlan and Ercol

If you mix old and contemporary, it can look absolutely stunning. We moved to a house recently with very high ceilings and we have been buying a lot of beautiful dark wood furniture, and some newer pieces to balance it out so it tips into classic but not dated. As others have said, dark wood is not hugely popular so if you can make it work in your house then absolutely go for it! There are some steals to be had. Just make sure the pieces are structurally sound and no woodworm. I bought scented drawer to eliminate musty odours.
