To be sick of fake OPs shitstirring?

And to think MN should do something about it. Write one controversial OP and then leave it. Like the one being surprised of women over 35 having children or being angry over "only" getting 200£ earrings and a 300£ meal out for your 60th birthday.

Maybe MN could install something like if the OP hasn't returned within three hours the thread is deleted- and this should be clear on the outset. AIBU?

I’m probably going to start hiding/deleting them a lot more, if only to hide the clutter. I do like pissing about on MN but I’m sick of feeling like I’m sort of training apparatus for AI LLMs.

Hairybuf · 08/02/2026 09:22

There are lots of perfectly valid reasons why someone wouldn’t be able to return to a thread within three hours, and I suspect some people just want to post their issue, read the responses, and not engage further. It’s not an obligation.

That said, I agree some people are wind up merchants.

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 08/02/2026 09:23

I was just about to start a thread about this!

Other ones 'Am i right in thinking that autism is over diagnosed because parents of today are just shit at parenting?'

Or anything at all about benefits.

ArrghNoJustNo · 08/02/2026 09:46

I'm more sick of people complaining about things like this all the time like it actually affects their lives.

Welcome to the internet. We're all adults here, MN doesn't need to clean up everything we don't like.

HoskinsChoice · 08/02/2026 11:16

This thread won't last or at least my post won't. They're there to trigger excessive reactions. Big reaction = high numbers of posts which = £

All social media owners do it. Why do you think the likes of this site, Facebook and twitter allow such blatant racism, sexism and other types of discrimination? It's because it provokes a response. And a response is money. They don't care about you or discrimination or AI or trolls, they just care about money.

ExtraOnions · 08/02/2026 11:19

…any attempt to report gets you a slap on the wrist for “Troll hunting”. The multi-part works of fiction are the best ones.. lots if emotional investment, and well timed updates = more engagement to impress the Venture Capitalists

I'm convinced the one started yesterday evening where the op's husband was earning 67k and they were getting UC and looking for more, was just posted to stir up the benefits hatred. The information they were asking for is so easily available by a quick google search or looking on Gov.uk site. then when people start piling on the op just disappears. There was no need at all disclose the husband's income at all for the question being asked.

Yeah, you're probably right. I just don't see the interest in starting a fake thread. Most of us got so much going on in life that surely it's better to ask for real advice rather than inventing something. Especially when it's anonymous so you can tell things you feel you can't irl.

If I am drawn to a thread which has loads of replies, I check to see if the OP has come back to respond.
If they have not, I just think it's either a wind up, or the OP is ignorant.
I usually don't bother to spend time answering.

5128gap · 08/02/2026 12:09

Tbh I couldn't care less if an OP is genuine, a troll or AI. If the subject catches my attention and I want to say something about it and read what other people have to say about it, why would it matter? We're not just talking 'to' an OP, we're talking to each other about the subject of the OP.

Notmymarmosets · 08/02/2026 12:13

You are not wrong. But at least they are easy to spot. OP is way too long. Says some absolute bollocks in the first couple of sentences and then embellishes it. For ages. Any engagement is good engagement it seems.
How long will I last if I start posting 'Rage bait' every time?

WhatNoRaisins · 08/02/2026 12:16

I never trust a thread where OP doesn't return and these same topics are getting tedious.

Welcome to the internet. We're all adults here, MN doesn't need to clean up everything we don't like.

Genuine engagement levels by provably real posters will affect the valuation of MN as an investable business, though.

If Venture Capitalists are impressed by obvious fakery then they’re disappointingly thick.
