To think France's plan to write to every 29 year old reminding them to breed is patronising nonsense??

Nobody alive is forgetting to do this

A lot of people don't want to because in the modern era it's not necessary and a lot less fun than other stuff

Some people DO want to but can't in which case idk give them the missing tools or funds

But nobody is forgetting

Why does this whole topic seem to bamboozle policymakers so hard?

Nobody on the goddamn planet is surprised by this.

Fewer people are breeding because it has always been the case that a fair number simply don't want to and this is the first time ever that it has become genuinely optional.

Treating adults like morons is just a recipe for disengagement from government.

Actually apparently the number of people who genuinely don't want children hasn't changed much. What has changed is the number of unintentionally childless, mainly due to multiple different reasons.
Cost it takes longer now to become financially independent, not being able to find a suitable partner, women choosing to delay having children due to building a career and yes it does get harder to get pregnant as you get older so some may have wanted children but end up childless due to not being able to. It's way more complicated then just people saying they don't want to. Just like most other social issues there are often complex reasons.

I call BS. No one is forced to have a gynaecological examination to get married. All my friends are married and not one, not a single one had to do a medical exam

I agree, I had a medical exam to validate my French visa and it was literally blood pressure listening to heart and lungs, and that’s it.

Apparently according to dodgy data gleaned from biased collection

Having children is not objectively a good experience - if you never feel "broody" it's not appealing

Scandinavian countries make it incredibly financially easy and people still do not fancy it (do it for granny ads notwithstanding)

You can call BS all you like. Perhaps it varies by region, but I read the requirements myself (we had been to the town hall to enquire and the gave us all the written details of what was required) then checked with ex because I couldn’t believe it either.
Edited to add, this was around 2007/2008.

I'm interested to know if the French healthcare and education systems could cope if everyone read the letter and then had unprotected sex every day consecutively until they were pregnant or had got someone else pregnant (although obviously the powers that be wouldn't be expecting that level of response).

Edited

I really don't understand such hypothetical comments.
The people who work on those campaigns know that statistically, it's very improbable that EVERYONE is going to pop 3 kids in the next 24 months. There's this thing called maths, data and statistics that is heavily used to create policies.

If everyone was disabled the benefit system would collapse. True. But it won't happen.

No medical certificate since 2008. Never ever ever was there a gynaecological exam. A rhesus test that could be done by a gynaecologist or a midwife yes, but thats not a gynaecological exam.

BruFord · 07/02/2026 22:52

It’s truly bizarre, although the article does explain that “The measure is part of a 16-point plan designed to increase the country’s dwindling birth rate, notably by countering infertility, which affects one in eight couples, according to officials.”

12.5% of couples (who are trying to conceive) being affected by infertility surprises me tbh. I’d assume it was less.

auserna · 07/02/2026 22:53

Jeez, that would be a fun letter to receive as an infertile woman.

GreenIsTheColourOfMyHoliday · 07/02/2026 22:56

You could say any medical campaign is patronising

They are largely ignored by most but they will reach a few people who either didn't know the information, were ignoring the information until it was in front of them or had misconceptions about the information

Is Macron going to send himself an overdue notice?

Ha, ha, brilliant comment @ladsladzladse.😆

Firefly1987 · 07/02/2026 23:12

Apparently France or the world isn't overpopulated enough then...

WelcometomyUnderworld · 07/02/2026 23:29

Seems like a good idea to me. At 29, I wanted kids in the future but was. Holding my career. At 36 and years of trying, I wish I had my 29 year old eggs available as an option to me.

Presumably if at 29 I’d known I didn’t want kids, I would have thrown the letter away along with the takeaway menus I get that don’t cater to my vegetarian diet. I’m not offended by them, they’re just not relevant to me so I pay them no heed.

abracadabra1980 · 07/02/2026 23:32

LameBorzoi · 07/02/2026 22:24

But yes, actually making it possible to house, raise and feed kids would be a nice strategy.

Agree 100%. If you can't afford housing by 29, it may be too late for some to 'breed'.

Happyjoe · 07/02/2026 23:36

I get that we need babies for the economy for the rest of us oldies, but when does it ever end? It just passes the problem down another generation or two.. There's enough people on this planet, we already ruining huge swathes of it. If people don't want or can't afford children, leave them be.

Firefly1987 · 07/02/2026 23:40

@Happyjoe exactly, the problem will never end if you just keep encouraging people to have children. The world doesn't need anymore mouths to feed! A couple less billion people on the planet through fewer births would be wonderful.

ScrollingLeaves · 07/02/2026 23:41

Designless · 07/02/2026 22:20

Oh no not the inability to do something they don't want to do anyway anything but that

A lot do want this but the men they know want to carry on care-free.

Time after time you hear about the ‘ticking clock’. That seems very loud around this age.

@Happyjoe Yes, the real issue is that we’re all hanging around for decades longer than we used to, thanks to modern medicine and improved living conditions.

DurinsBane · 07/02/2026 23:46

It because some countries have such a dwindling birth rate they will cease to be functional societies, as not enough babies being born, not enough people working compared to retired people. Not enough tax money coming in to run services. Japan have said that if it carries on how it is over there they maybe have 50 or so years left. They need migration to keep the country going, but Japan (as a generalisation) are quite resistant to migration

Honestly part of my job involves fertility treatment and the amount of people at late 30s who thought they would be okay because their nan/mum/mate got pregnant at 45 is worrying.
