Why do people not care about the dangers of AI slop?

Theda13 · 07/02/2026 22:12

It’s destroying the planet due to how much energy it wastes.

It also hurts artists, designers and writers etc.

And let’s face it, the AI slop that some people call “art” is very ugly.

Why do people not care about the dangers?

For the same reasons people don't care about fast fashion, overconsumption, and producing too much waste.

Out of sight, out of mind. And if it provides them with a brief moment of entertainment then all the better.

SockQueen · 07/02/2026 22:13

Because it makes doing their shopping or planning a holiday easier, apparently. Or answering a Mumsnet question rather than just using their own brain. I'm very worried.

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 07/02/2026 22:16

Because the progression of technology is a wonderful thing.

LameBorzoi · 07/02/2026 22:18

I think many people do care. Personally, I'm just not sure what I can do about it.

randomchap · 07/02/2026 22:19

It's not just the AI slop that's a worry.

AI false news
Real news labelled as AI
People talking to ChatGPT in place of real connections

Post truth world, pick your facts to match your beliefs, don't pick your belief to match the facts.

Even if the outcomes are disastrous?

OP posts:
ArtificialStupidity · 07/02/2026 22:35

Agree. We are being so passive about it

smallglassbottle · 07/02/2026 22:45

What are we supposed to do about it? Most people don't seem to give a sod about using ai, dropping litter, buying crap from China, making loads of noise, eating fast food or completely ignoring the rights of others. They only operate on a surface level of thinking.

If the techbros are going to release rubbish like this, people are going to use it. It might have its place, but ai slop is appealing to lots of people and we're stuck with it.

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 07/02/2026 22:49

Theda13 · 07/02/2026 22:33

Even if the outcomes are disastrous?

But honestly why care? As humans our existence on this planet is so miniscule compared to the infinite in longevity of the world itself. In 100 years neither you or I or any of these posters will be here and technology will be different again. And disastrous is an opinion.

ThatCyanCat · 07/02/2026 22:57

It's the novelty, I think.

Can't bloody stand it when people try to use ChatGPT or Grok as the ultimate judge or arbiter of something though. "Look, I'm right, the AI chatbot says..." Even when it gives the answer I want, it's still not the final authority! It's just elaborate predictive text!

How is false information progress?
Slop is the word.
I ask AI questions that I know the answer to on a regular basis. It has never got one right and often gets them seriously wrong but presents the answers as fact. It has made me wary of trusting its answers on any subject I don't know.

smallsilvercloud · 08/02/2026 00:05

It’s evolution, we would never progress if new technology wasn’t introduced, some people are scared of change or don’t understand why when they managed fine without it, but the fact that it’s popular is because it benefits everyday life, it quick and instant, it’s not going away. Remember the hysteria about mobile phones caused bad health, well there was no real evidence, I believe the same for the energy for ai, people panicking like we’re somehow going to run out, except it won’t, it’ll keep progressing and everyone will use and rely on it just like they do mobile phones and there are new ways of sustainable energy will be created. I don’t feel bad in the slightest if I use chat gpt, or get on a plane, or buy a manufactured item, I don’t feel I’m in danger. I don’t always think it’s needs to be a replacement for talent or studying for example but it does help with gathering information quickly and can be a good support when needed.

CrazyGoatLady · 08/02/2026 00:07

AI has its uses, but a lot of it is just trash. And it does seem to be making people much less able to think for themselves.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 08/02/2026 00:10

I think AI is immensely useful and it has great potential.

But I worry that people will unable to use it intelligently and for the greater good.

Chatgtp · 08/02/2026 00:20

I rather like it.

BUT don't believe everything AI says, some of it is inaccurate, some of it is rubbish but some of it can be very useful.

For example, to plan a trip to Wales covering history, landscape and gardens it will give you good ideas. Whilst should I get a tattoo of an eagle on my back to annoy my horrible mother is not such a good idea.

By the way AI consumes an inordinate amount of power to answer these frivolous questions, just bear that in mind too.

TrickorTreacle · 08/02/2026 00:41

There have been numerous progressions which caused a shift in jobs but ultimately made life better.

Early tools and the creation of fire.
The windmill, wheelbarrow and 2-man saw.
Horse-drawn cart.
Industrial revolution and factories.
Calculator.
Typewriter and computer.
Internet.
Smartphones and Alexa.

We survived.

Netflix uses more energy and water.
