It’s all over Facebook again. AIBU to find these so irritating.

So on the basis that we're already ruining the planet, it's fine to invent new ways to wreck it even more, just so that people can aimlessly generate poor-quality derivative slop?

the point was to suggest that how can you say about ai if your already using the data centres

The impact that AI has on the environment and this is the sort of shite it’s being used for 🙄

Depressing isn’t it

Some activities benefit society. When you watch a film on Netflix you are paying the artists who made it.

AI does not benefit society. It may well cause societal breakdown in the end. The energy and water usage just makes a bad thing worse.

From an educational aspect Ai provides alot more usage than a tv or film on netflix.

I 100% agree, it’s completely unnecessary and this pointless use of AI is destroying the environment!

Ok I've namechanged for this as I'm embarrassed to ask.

but can you (or someone) explain briefly without a load of links to pages & pages of stuff to read, very basically how AI is destroying the planet?

im not well enough to read articles & comprehend a lot of data 😥

I get how it's taking over a lot of jobs etc & hate it for that reason, but I dont get why/how its destroying the planet??

think of a car engine sat still at traffic lights using very little fuel, now think of a car on the german autobhan going full power, originally when Ai was being trained the power was like the car on the german autobhan. now Ai has mostly been trained on data at the data centers its more like the car sat at the traffic lights when people use it.

how ever many people still think the Ai is using energy like the car going full speed, yet internet use power via the data centres, so does netflix, cars polute, planes poluite etc but for some reason AI is the bad one ?

Altogether, according to a 2024 research review, increased dependency on AI tools to perform tasks that require deeper thinking may risk:
- reduced mental engagement
- neglect of cognitive skills, such as calculations or information retrieval
- declined memory capacity
- shortened attention spans and focus issues
- inability to apply knowledge to new situations
- ethical and social concerns, such as decreased human-to-human interaction and social isolation
- mental health challenges, such as reduced self-confidence

I've quoted a few points from this article for you:

- In 2024, data centres accounted for about 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption. But demand is projected to double to 945 TWh by 2030
- xAI’s data centre in Memphis, Tennessee emits an estimated 1,200 to 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) a year
- In 2027, global AI training and use are projected to account for 4.2−6.6 billion cubic metres of water withdrawal. This raises concerns around priorities for water use
- The construction of data centres and AI technologies requires significant amounts of minerals and metals
- the heat generated by these submerged facilities can raise local water temperatures, further intensifying existing warming due to climate change. Elevated water temperatures reduce oxygen availability, threatening marine species’ healthy functioning. Additionally, warmer surface waters mix less effectively with deeper, nutrient-rich layers, disrupting nutrient cycles and potentially harming biodiversity and food webs.

What direct risks does AI pose to the climate and environment? - Grantham Research Institute on climate change and the environment

While AI has the potential to support climate action and biodiversity conservation, unmitigated growth in AI use poses significant ethical and direct climate and environmental risks.

It’s terrible for the environment, and for what? Slop

Everyone Posting their shite AI pictures was the last push I needed to delete Instagram and Facebook off my phone. I’ve lost a lot of respect for a lot of people who know the environmental impact this shit has but still do it “because it’s cute”.

That argument basically boils down to: "Some people lacked critical thinking skills before AI (77m Trump voters for a start) so we shouldn't care if even more people lose theirs"

Just like your other argument boils down to: "we're already torching the planet, might as well torch it some more".

From chatgpt:

Here’s the simple, no-nonsense version:
AI isn’t destroying the planet by itself — it’s the massive amount of electricity and hardware needed to run AI that's the problem.
The 3 main reasons 🌍

  1. Huge electricity use ⚡
AI runs in massive data centres (warehouses full of powerful computers) These computers run 24/7 Training a big AI model can use as much electricity as thousands of homes A lot of this electricity still comes from fossil fuels (coal, gas), which increases carbon emissions So more AI = more electricity = more pollution (in many places)
  1. Water usage 💧
Data centres get extremely hot They use huge amounts of water to cool down the computers Some estimates: One AI conversation can use a small bottle of water worth (cooling indirectly) At global scale, that adds up to millions of litres
  1. Hardware manufacturing 🏭
AI needs very powerful chips (GPUs) Making these chips requires: Rare minerals Mining Manufacturing pollution Shipping worldwide That increases environmental damage and resource use Why people are suddenly talking about it AI is growing extremely fast right now: More AI tools More users Bigger models More data centres being built So the environmental impact is growing quickly 📈 Important balance ⚖️ Some people also argue AI can help the planet: Better energy efficiency Climate modelling Smarter transport Reducing waste So it's not purely bad — but it's definitely energy-hungry. The simplest summary AI isn't "destroying the planet" directly — but: It uses a lot of electricity It uses a lot of water It requires resource-heavy hardware And because AI is growing fast, those impacts are getting bigger. Also — no embarrassment needed. This is actually a really good question, and a lot of people are confused about it.

You realise that it is possible to leave England (I'm not even in England) without the use of a plane?

I went all the way to Istanbul and back last month. Not a plane in sight in either direction.

So your whataboutery is both pointless and wrong.
