Hello Hive mind of mumsnet! We have all had a scam call i imagine, but this one takes the biscuit....

Received nearly 1000 calls/messages/whatapps today from people claiming they have had a missed call from me? What's this about?

AIBU to ask what the point of this is??? Bought a new sim card and have changed numbers today. But what is the point of this 'scam'? Thank you in advance for any input

You call back and rack up a bill!

Someone has spoofed your number, basically made it look like spam calls have come from you.

randomchap · 05/02/2026 18:30

Just to add, you're not being scammed, but people think you are the scammer

taxcon · 05/02/2026 18:45

You haven't been scammed, your numbers been spoofed

Thank you for replying everyone. What is the point of this though? I don't get the end goal?

Someone else (usually outside of the UK) has used your number to show as a caller display - Spoofing. Many people will not answer calls if they show from abroad but may be more inclined to answer a UK number. Some will pick up, the person calling hopes to catch one of them who will fall for their scam. Those that didn't pick up get a missed call and then message/ call the missed number to see if it was genuine. They are not scamming you per sey, someone is trying to scam them by pretending to be calling from a number that they are not. There are processing passing through to make this illegal/ not possible but it will take a short time to complete, in the meantime they'll use your number to spoof for a short time before they move onto another.
