So had a review with UC today phone call she stated she would up date the journal with what I need to provide.
A full length photo of myself standing outside my front door with the key in the lock!?
Then a letter from the children's school & nursery saying they attend there
A letter from the children's gp
Passport photos
Child benefit award letter
Birth certificates (they have had birth certificates before )

This isn't a new claim either I dont understand why gp letters are needed they want one for me and my partner too.

Also on the phone call asked who I use for my gas and electricity
Ive never been asked these things before seems strange to ask?
Anyone else had a review lately what did they ask for.

Partner works full time if that matters.

Passports are so expensive. Nearly £100!

Considering they last 10years and you are not only paying for the passport itself but obviously the fees for it being made and the ability to use consular services in foreign countries should anything go wrong I would say it’s a bloody good deal!

Sorry. I do understand what you're saying. But it just seems like such a waste if time that they can't see that he was verified 'x' years ago. So rather than spend time replying to a message in someone's journal they have to look at paperwork that they've seen before.

What paperwork do you assume they have? There is no paperwork. You clearly didn’t understand my response. I am baffled that people who are essentially getting government money for free funded by tax payers are moaning that they have to do something as simple as verify ID as and when requested. This is what you agree to when you sign your commitments at the start of a claim. If you don’t like it then don’t claim! It would be a bit like me telling my boss which parts of my job I want to do or moaning about having to provide evidence for my expenses. If I want the money I provide the evidence requested.

What triggers a review though or are they just random?

I've claimed UC for going on 2 years now and have never had a review so I'm curious too.

It’s usually a random process, sometimes a change in circumstances or occasionally if there’s reason to believe there might be fraud.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 06/02/2026 07:45

There is a huge problem with fraudulent claims. Also many people put some random bloke on their child’s birth certificate for fraudulent reasons.
I agree with having to show it as evidence.

Really?

Wait until fate turns around and you have to make a claim.

It sounds like a frickin' nightmare @ChristmasTime2023 - I feel v, grateful I don't have to do this.

We have to stop this thinking. Some people need UC. Some people choose UC. Everyone is entitled to UC if they NEED it. But it's those that are deliberately organising their lives to minimise their work and maximise their benefits that are the problem.

HoskinsChoice · 06/02/2026 08:21

Irren · 06/02/2026 05:37

That doesn't make it right.

Blame those claiming benefits fraudulently, not the system.

LilyBunch25 · 06/02/2026 08:31

Thechaseison71 · 05/02/2026 23:30

Probably quite a few people claiming UC that pay income tax also.

Approximately 42% of claimants do, yes

The random bloke on a birth certificate one is definitely not one I've come across in my 13 years as a benefits specialist.....but hey ho..

Needsomesunnyweather · 06/02/2026 08:35

I’m hoping for some advice please .. we have had a leak in our kitchen ceiling for a few years. It’s a flat roof and the leak is at a particular corner.

Only happens when it rains in a certain direction and heavily. Have had so much work done trying to fix ( and spent a lot of money ) and have had the flat roof replaced.

Is there anyone here who is / or has had something similar and used a structural engineer or a specialist .. not a builder as I said we have had so much replaced already.

Thanks

Stop trying to shame people for expecting checks and balances in the system.

Anyone could become disabled at any point. It doesn't mean they will then suddenly become ok with waste and fraud in the system.

It's a stupid logic.

How the hell would you do that? And even why? I'm not sure if it's still the case but to be aan oh the birth certificate he had to be present unless you were married to him.

So if you are married he's your husband and not a random, if he was a random he can't be added with being present.

Not sure how it would work as far as defrauding the benefits system or what you could gain

Its just a weird throw away comment imo. I've never come across it and I've been in welfare benefits for a long time.

I have never linked it to fraud and not sure how that would work - but in the working class community grew up in, I knew quite a few young women who put random male friends on their birth certificate.

AFAIK these men had consented to it and came along for the registration despite knowing for sure it wasn’t theirs.

It was quite obvious as well in some cases, like a white mother who was claiming her mate to be the (white) father and the child was mixed race.

In each of the cases I can think of, they either were not sure who the bio dad was and/or the bio dad was washing his hands off the whole thing.

But yeah, I also don’t see how you could defraud the benefits system with this.

I know of people who leave father's name blank on birth certificate and claim as a single parent whilst in a relationship with said man.
Fraud is rife

Well I kind of assumed that when someone verified his ID 6 years ago, and again when he turned 18, that there was a "tick" or something on the system to say they had verified his existence. As him living with me makes no difference to how much money I get, I wouldn't lie about him being here. Not that they've asked for his address anyway!

Obviously I'm wrong and that's fine. Just feels like a waste of time to when I feel like they could hold a record of this. Like a PP said, why isn't it all linked like in other countries? I will take the paperwork in, like you say, it's a condition of claiming. But I'm allowed to grumble about it. Like im allowed to grumble about being expected to do training (unpaid) on a day off. Or go into a meeting.

And fuck off with the lazy, non tax payer shit. You know nothing about me, why I claim and what I do or don't earn.

That's just stupid of them. You can have a father named and still be a single parent.

If you don’t work and all your income is from benefits then you don’t pay tax. You use the money from taxpayers to pay the vat etc.
We have a tenant who has never worked a day in her life. First child at 16. She has never paid a penny of tax in her life because has never earn a penny in her life! It’s not a difficult concept.

Oh dear. That's quite embarrassing for you. Especially as you openly tell us you're a recipient of an awful lot of state benefits without doing anything much in return.

notatinydancer · 06/02/2026 10:37

Jellybunny56 · 05/02/2026 16:15

It is being asked for more now. Full length photo proves it is you, outside the front door links you to that exact address, key in lock shows you have full access and control of the property. Especially if you are claiming housing element, where we are at least they have recently found quite a number of people who are receiving housing benefit for a property which actually they are subletting and receiving rent for.

so easily faked though.

notnorman · 06/02/2026 10:39

Im glad they’re making robust checks as there are criminal gangs who are exploiting any trust that may have previously been given.

So your rental income comes directly from the state. Struggling to work out why you are hanging onto the moral high ground.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 06/02/2026 10:41

@Crochetandtea look at you getting all the rent via UC to pay your mortgage whereas some of us on UC don't get any help for ours unless it is a loan so I would suggest you jog on.
