So had a review with UC today phone call she stated she would up date the journal with what I need to provide.
A full length photo of myself standing outside my front door with the key in the lock!?
Then a letter from the children's school & nursery saying they attend there
A letter from the children's gp
Passport photos
Child benefit award letter
Birth certificates (they have had birth certificates before )

This isn't a new claim either I dont understand why gp letters are needed they want one for me and my partner too.

Also on the phone call asked who I use for my gas and electricity
Ive never been asked these things before seems strange to ask?
Anyone else had a review lately what did they ask for.

Partner works full time if that matters.

I know of people who leave father's name blank on birth certificate and claim as a single parent whilst in a relationship with said man.
Fraud is rife

Whether or not a father is on a birth certificate has nothing to do with whether or not someone claims as a single parent. Absolutely nothing.

LilyBunch25 · 06/02/2026 10:40

So your rental income comes directly from the state. Struggling to work out why you are hanging onto the moral high ground.

This is hilarious. This poster is very loud about her beliefs on benefit claimants as well.

Yes, I am aware that you can claim as a single parent with the father named on the birth certificate

We have to stop this thinking. Some people need UC. Some people choose UC. Everyone is entitled to UC if they NEED it. But it's those that are deliberately organising their lives to minimise their work and maximise their benefits that are the problem.

This in abundance.
I know people who are working full time and paying extortionate rent, hence the need for UC top up

Its not hilarious, it's true. I've been a benefits specialist well over a decade and landlords who profit from the same system they like to slam are just quietly riding on the back of that exact same system. You know that, hence your rather silly comment. You have an appreciating asset funded by your tenant's UC housing costs, so it's win win for you.

So why is it relevant to claiming benefits?

IngridBergmannn · 06/02/2026 11:16

Navybluecoat · 05/02/2026 22:02

I had something similar

The silly cow next door would ring them and tell them I was claiming as a single parent when I wasn't (i was!)

They would investigate and believe that whoever had rang them was shit stirring and drop the case

Then she'd ring them back and they'd investigate again

This went on for about 2 years when a snotty lady came round, sat in my lounge snapping question after question at me,trying to catch me out before telling me I 'had' to show her all our wardrobes to 'prove' I was living with my dc

I just told her to crack on as I had nothing to hide,so she did

She found a pair of men's pyjama bottoms in my wardrobe and claimed that was 'proof' I had a bloke living with me-just a pair of blue checked pj bottoms in with my 'female' clothes

Thankfully I was able to prove id bought them for me at the charity shop the day before and they where for my own use

Honest to god,it was inhumane they way she treated me but they never called back for some reason

Wtf.... So sorry this happened to you!

But what a bunch of bullshit. I don't claim anything, but if I would, and someone checked my wardrobes, they'd find a bunch of men's clothing. I'm a woman and live with my daughter, no men.

I just like unisex style, I'm almost 6ft and like wearing oversized men's jackets, blazers, bombers, bikers and have quite a few. Ditto roomy hoodies and knits. Also own several silk ties. My shoe size is 8, so lots of my boots and trainers like docs, adidases, etc can be taken for 'men's'. What does that even prove? Is it against the law to buy men's clothing if you're a woman?

Absolute insanity.

Beggars can’t be choosers OP.

As others say, it’d be easy to get around with AI but I guess they’re at least trying to reduce benefit fraud.

How DARE you essentially call OP a “beggar” without even knowing her circumstances? Unbelievable ignorance. Reported

They'd have a field day with both my dds

Both have a very masculine style, neither own a dress, both live in doc Martins (both wear size 8/9),both wear mens boxers/pyjamas/socks/jeans/hoodies and neither wear make up

You wouldn't believe a woman lived in their homes if you where to check their wardrobes

It's a daft way of doing things

We keep having these reviews like randomly having to have a face to face and provide a years worth of statements. We’ve always been open with them, like I recently got £100k life insurance payout which they disregarded as I was using it for new bathrooms, woodburner and paying off the mortgage. I also got £8k pack pay for pip which they also disregarded. So I don’t know why they keep doing these checks on us for a years statements when we had to do all that when I had lump sums going in a few months ago.

I think they are clamping down massively to try and catch people that shouldn’t be claiming.

pip is also increasing difficult to get now after the rapid increase during covid where they were handing it out left right and centre for anxiety etc. I’ve got stage 3 cancer and initially I got turned down! (Got it after appeal)

ForWittyTealOP · 06/02/2026 10:29

Oh dear. That's quite embarrassing for you. Especially as you openly tell us you're a recipient of an awful lot of state benefits without doing anything much in return.

Would you prefer we didn’t house her and her three children and their dog? We are providing a service it just so happens that the state pay her rent. I agree it would be better if she had a job and paid her own rent.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2026 12:47

I suspect they may be asking for a standard list of things because it costs time and therefore money to tailor the request to each person.

Not ideal but one possible reason?

Crochetandtea · 06/02/2026 12:52

Coffeeandbooks88 · 06/02/2026 10:41

@Crochetandtea look at you getting all the rent via UC to pay your mortgage whereas some of us on UC don't get any help for ours unless it is a loan so I would suggest you jog on.

No mortgage on the property so that’s irrelevant. We don’t tax on the rent though so it’s not all profit. Trying our best to ensure we will never need to rely on benefits to survive.

Isthateveryonethen · 06/02/2026 12:54

daffodilandtulip · 05/02/2026 16:49

Years ago on tax credits, they accused me of lying about being single. I had to send photos of the insides of the wardrobes and bathroom cupboards to prove I lived alone 🤣

That’s brilliant 😂

Redruby2020 · 06/02/2026 12:54

How funny you should mention this, but a lady was on the bus last week on the phone saying the exact same thing, she was speaking at full volume so impossible to not hear what she was saying. And she was disputing the taking a photo outside her door etc, so I kind of guessed it must be connected to UC etc.

I have just had my review, and have not had any of this, but despite in the initial stage being asked for last 4 mths bank statements etc. Then in the final call which I am familiar with, further questions are asked, and I was then asked again, how many bank accounts do you have, I guess this is to catch you out, in case you sent less via the statements submitted already. Then after that in my ‘to do’ list asked me to declare savings etc 🤦‍♀️ so I guess this is to check further. Despite not having anything to hide, it does make me nervous still.

Hopefully it solves any mysteries when you send them what they want.

If the house isn’t mortgaged I’m assuming the rent is at a fair and reasonable rate, below market value even, perhaps?

So just relyimg on other peoples bebefits then lol

Many landlords domt take UC tenants so its quite easy to get people to pay rent from their earnings if you were genuine about not relying on benefits

Sure except you could just use someone else’s key. What if you’ve dog or house sat? What if you’re the cleaner there or it’s a friends key they’ve given you?Having a key to a property doesn’t mean you live there.

It doesn’t no, but then you shouldn’t be living somewhere else I.e the partner of someone, and have a key to their place, when for example in our tenancies it specifically says not to give to persons not named on tenancy. And then stay 7 days a week if you want, and still expect benefits to pay, because oh yeah, you don’t want to live together.
It’s very easy to do when you just live with family elsewhere then that home exists with or without you, but the government are slow on this kind of thing.

I’ve known people hide their car to stay extra so it doesn’t look like what it looks like, fraud.
