People walking on treadmills in the gym

crinklechips · 04/02/2026 11:00

OK to start with I know I'm being a bit U but I need to have a mini-rant.

I use currently use the gym mainly for running intervals and speedier sessions which are easier to manage indoors.

Every time I go in all the treadmills are taken, and mostly by people walking.

Now I can totally understand that people have different fitness levels, might be using the treadmill to warm up or for recovery and that's absolutely fine.

But there seems to a growing number of people (actually, exclusively younger women in my observation) just using the treadmills for a gentle stroll while messing around on their phones.

I ended up next to a young woman last night who spent the entire half hour I was on the neighbouring treadmill walking at 3kph, no incline, while scrolling instagram. I can barely call that exercise, it's below a normal walking pace. If that's how you want to kill time then I guess it's up to you but it just seems selfish when there's a queue of people waiting for a treadmill.

I’m currently in the gym, walking and scrolling on a treadmill but I’m not in my 20s and my gym gear isn’t very flash so hopefully that’s ok 🤞

em222 · 05/02/2026 10:07

If you watched me the entire half hour on the treadmill, I’d think you were weird. Can’t say I’ve ever been to the gym and been interested in what speed or incline anyone else was doing. I go do my thing and listen to my music.

Givemeausernamepls · 05/02/2026 10:10

Not only are you U, you also sound mean and judgy... if you only have an hour, have a second work out on hand. I've never stood waiting for a piece of gym kit, as I just go do something else. I sue kids club / creche so often limited time too. Can't do running intervals do them on the rower / bike...

No issue seeing people walking on treadmills, but if you don't put your weights away, or wipe your sweat (low standards I mean when you can physically see it), please do better!

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/02/2026 10:27

to those of you swho feel judged: please don't
any exercise is better than no exercise
and everyone has to start somewhere
if I see someone walking on a treadmill or using low weights or doing strange (to me) exercises. I don't judge. I think 'good for you!'

I’m going to the gym today to walk on the treadmill (5.5km per hour, 3% incline). I am nine months pregnant, though, does that make it acceptable?

Hmmm. What sort of gym gear do you wear?

Walking at 5.5mph? While pregnant??? I'm jogging quickly at that pace!

5 kilometres per hour! That's 3 miles per hour.

What an odd question. Gym wear that fits under or over her bump I assume.

I think you're safe from @crinklechips . But of course, if you're even a little bit pretty or talk to anyone, well, watch out - the gym police are waiting ready to haul you off the treadmill.

This a gazillion times.

I'm one of the fitter & stronger women of my age in my gym (it's full of very strong women of all ages, and men).

But today my workout probably looked very odd. It was all sorts of balances: balancing on my knees on a Swiss ball, balancing on two yoga bricks on one leg; balancing on one leg with my eyes closed; lunging with my eyes closed; balancing on 2 bricks on one leg and putting my hand on the floor.

My hamstrings will scream at me tomorrow ...

As long as there’s not someone doing a more worthy form of exercise who needs to use it.

Yeah, it’s only if you’re young and hot yet aren’t running that @crinklechips will chuck you off.

I think you’ve missed the joke…

Payitforward55 · 05/02/2026 12:45

I walk on the treadmill, people pounding, breathing loudly and sweating all over the place annoy me but thats their business. You are being totally unreasonable and have little to worry about if this is what annoys you.

Sparklybat · 05/02/2026 13:20

I run ultras and go on outdoor training runs for hours. I also regularly enjoy walking on the treadmill scrolling Instagram. Both have different impacts. Why can’t you run outside?

Morecoombe · 05/02/2026 13:20

ADayAwayFromYourHeart · 05/02/2026 08:46

It's for walking.

yes as per the topic of the thread ?!
my question is obviously why you choose to walk indoors - is it due to weather or safety ? Or you just prefer walking on a treadmill? Surely that gets boring after 5-10 minutes?

The treadmill is sprung. Much better for my joints than pavements. And I wear headphones and listen to podcasts or books. I also like to use the incline, so thank goodness the OP would look slightly less askance at me.

Not all of it. Skimming posts about the actual original OP, not any tangent discussions.

Not a problem.

Just filter and read the OPs posts?

cupfinalchaos · 05/02/2026 14:10

Er you might think I’m having a gentle stroll but I slipped a disk last year and it’s part of my rehab. Doesn’t make your workout any more worthy than mine!

ParmaVioletTea · 05/02/2026 14:14

And @crinklechips has still not apologised.
