Why is what’s happening in Leicester secret?

GrandmaMazur · 04/02/2026 10:59

I just saw a news alert about a very serious incident that happened last night in Leicester and the area is cordoned off with a heavy police presence. But there are no details available.

I don’t remember seeing a news story like this before where nothing about the actual incident is reported. Does this happen regularly and I’ve not noticed or is this quite unusual?

I hope it’s nothing too awful.

Because some people are so desperate to be “part of the story” that they invent connections

a train crash: “I was on a different train a week ago”

a stabbing the night before: “ I wouldn’t let my children go to school in case the person being held in custody was released and given the knife back”

a stabbing the night before: “ I wouldn’t let my children go to school in case the person being held in custody was released and given the knife back”

If there's been a stabbing in an area with racial tensions, or gang issues, there's a legitimate risk of people either being targeted or otherwise caught up in the violent incidents that inevitably follow while people are on edge.

I went to DMU in Leicester and live in a nearby town. One thing that always stuck with me was how safe I felt in Leicester, and how friendly everyone was. I’m shocked to hear of this happening there.

My thoughts are with the victim, his family and friends.

I honestly can’t, unless it’s a well known person?

There are stabbings everyday (sadly). Why would this one make the headlines and why, after nearly 20hrs, are they still not saying what happened?

Id understand no names but i cant fathom why they’re not releasing more?

This! I often wonder why some parts of the country are reported and others are not. Domestic homicide stabbing are frequent in a lot of places you wouldn’t expect but go unreported. When I first started my job may many years ago, I remember being shocked for the first year as I didn’t realise how frequently or close to home these unpublicised incidents took place.

A few years ago I was at a show at the Curve theatre in Leicester and there was a lockdown. It lasted over an hour. Something to do with the carpark.

Whats really weird is there were no reports for weeks after. I gave up looking and forgot about it. Someone told me someone had been stabbed there. I just found it really weird that no journalists had picked up the story from the hundreds of ppl and staff that were there at the time.

Same - it's the side of campus I know very well, and I always felt safe enough around there, apart from the psycho Deliveroo cyclist gauntlet through the middle of campus (and the slightly nutty Uber drivers).

I know a lot of staff and students there (we take DMU students on placement) so I hope they're all bearing up OK.

Having been in the unfortunate situation of something similar happening at my DC’s university, the logistics of contacting next of kin can be tricky. Please give the police time and space to do their jobs and give the people involved the opportunity to hear news about their loved ones first. For those of you coming onto social media and demanding answers about a tragic situation which is fuck all to do with you, you are pretty vile. Some of you are nothing but ghouls.

Agree.

Plus the media may be limited in what they can say if there is an arrest but not a charge. The age of the alleged attacker/s is another issue. It does not have to be some sort of conspiracy.

You’re really clutching at straws aren’t you?

So apparently now using a 🤔 emoji means I don’t care about the many fatal stabbings and incidents that are going on in this country lately?

Ok.

You carry on in your lala land dear whilst meanwhile in the real world…

There may be ‘many fatal stabbings’ but knife crime, and the number of murders committed with knives, have both fallen in the last year.

Disturbia81 · 04/02/2026 12:43

No matter how safe somewhere feels, it only takes one violent person/person with mental health issues to do something like this. It doesn’t make the area worse generally

Carriemac · 04/02/2026 12:47

that explains the number of unmarked police speeding by us in south Notts yesterday- at least 5 high speed blue light fast plainclothes cars

Sophiablue95 · 04/02/2026 12:49

Similar at metrocentre in Gateshead just after Christmas. I was there that day and armed police had men on the floor.

They tried to say it was over a parking dispute in the local news a few days later. One security man got in trouble for revealing the truth.

It happened last night and was reported by GB News. Then it seemed to have been pulled. All the news site are saying is that there has been a serious incident in Leicester.
So what is it that they dont want us to know?

The delay is most likely due to notifying family and formal identification of victim.

JustSawJohnny · 04/02/2026 12:51

Simplesbest · 04/02/2026 11:15

My sister lives right there and she's wondering the same thing. No info at all even for the people around it. It's all cordoned off still.

I live in Leicestershire and everyone is saying it was 3 stabbings on street connecting the Infirmary and DMU buildings.

Likely that someone has died and, for example if a student, they will need to be identified and family notified. Not easy when victim may not be local.

Of course, the usual suspects will be gobbing off with the clear undercurrent of it being 'hushed' or 'covered up' for their own personal political reasons.

When it turns out it was a white bloke who did it they'll just slunk off, no apologies, safe in the knowledge they planted a seed anyway.

Incredibly offensive, particularly to victims of a crime, to use their loved ones as a pawn, IMO.

SockQueen · 04/02/2026 12:53

We had a multiple stabbing on our (usually very peaceful) estate just over a year ago. It was obvious something bad had happened due to the number of police/ambulances etc around, but no official information came out till the next day, with the names of the deceased taking longer to be released. In the meantime the local FB page was going nuts with theories, demanding to know what was going on, "what are they keeping from us?" etc. My friend who admins the group had over 100 join requests that night, mostly from journos snooping around.

It did eventually make national news, but the police have to ensure safety of the area/people, and that the relevant relatives are informed, before updating Joe Public.

weetumshie · 04/02/2026 12:55

There are legal constraints on such incidents. What do you want to know beyond what news channels are reporting, bearing in mind they have lawyers scrutinising reports?

gototogo · 04/02/2026 12:57

It’s on the BBC, it will be held back until next of kin can be located, they try to make sure that they can be informed ahead of press conferences

Hasn’t it ever crossed your mind that every case is different? I mean seriously? You can’t grasp that the police may have to stay quiet because of procedural issues? That some next of kin may be more difficult to track down than others? There may be a million reasons why they have to delay making things public. Believe me it’s got nothing to do with hiding things from you @Obeseandashamed You are not important in these scenarios, believe it or not.

The police have said on X that there weren't multiple stabbings. One man has been sadly murdered.

PoppyFleur · 04/02/2026 12:50

The delay is most likely due to notifying family and formal identification of victim.

That's not the case at all. The police won't name a victim until that's been done, but as you can see with the statement that's been issued today, they'll refer to people by their age, sex etc.

The statement took as long as it did because that's how long it took them to establish the facts.

JoRaRaRa · 04/02/2026 13:02

This is so sad! I also went to DMU from 2006 to 2010 so I know the area well. I used to walk around at all hours from the library, or to the cash machine or shops etc. I always thought it was a safe, busy area especially during term time so I'm sure there's loads of witnesses. What an horrific thing to see too.

Absolute nonsense. In trouble with who? For what?

Hardly BBC journalism at its finest.

On the contrary. The BBC is very good at not reporting speculation, and in waiting to report facts. If the police weren't telling the BBC what had happened, the BBC is not going to go round reporting what equally uninformed residents think.

Unless there are Jews involved...

Some of the racist comments on this thread have been truly disgusting.

It's truly abhorrent to see some posters gleefully using tragic incidents like this in order to spread their racist propaganda.

A young man has died. Have a little respect.
