Is my DS’s tutor being unreasonable

PWPmum · 04/02/2026 08:39

My DS 11 who is in year 6 has a weekly tutor to help him prepare for his SATs and support his spelling. He is dyslexic. She insists on being paid at the beginning of the month with the sessions she will teach agreed in advance.
My DS is not well today. So I contacted the tutor to let her know he can’t do the lesson today and asked if we could roll the lesson over
she has replied saying as the cancellation is on the day and her time is booked out, there is no rolling over or refund.
But there will be no lesson today so part of me feels why should I pay?
She’s offered to teach him at the weekend but we’re busy then.
I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable or not to push for the credit to go towards next month or not.

Thanks for all your replies. We managed to fix a mutually convenient time for the weekend.
When my DS started with her, I used to pay weekly which I preferred but she asked me to swap to a month in advance. She said this was because she often had to chase people for payment after each lesson. I hold my hands up that this included me sometimes which is why I agreed to change to the more formal set up.

I’m self employed.

You are the sort of person I find a reason to politely fire as soon as I have someone lined up to replace you.

You do not go to a supermarket and expect to pay days later.

Your attitude is disgraceful and I hope these replies have made you think twice.

Oh god it gets worse! You are amazingly lucky she still comes to you at all.

AnotherForumUser · 05/02/2026 08:41

While you are clearly attempting to help your son's future opportunities by ensuring he gets tutoring you are ignoring what you are teaching him with your shitty attitude to other people. That is going to do him damage later on when he behaves like you and people tell him to get to fuck.

You have paid late and expect the tutor to bend over backwards because YOU cancelled her slot at the last minute. Regardless of your whinging excuse she couldn't fill that slot at the last minute. And when she first offered you a weekend alternative you didn't want that and expected her to duck around with her timetable to make up for your son's sickness. I am self employed and would have booted you out so hard and fast after your late payments you'd still be in orbit. How dare you treat this tutor with such contempt. Get her a bunch of flowers, apologise and tell her you'll be treating her with the respect she deserves as a professional when your son gets his next session.

And of course when your son was sick and you called off at the last moment you didn't pay her at all.

No wonder you're pissed at the change in payment terms.

What a pity she doesn't seem to have enough demand for her services to dump you, which is what most self employed people would do if they could.

Goditsmemargaret · 05/02/2026 09:02

I would bet the farm she didn't have to chase 'people' for payment, she had to chase you.

Your lack of consideration is staggering.

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/02/2026 13:12

Sorry but YABVU for the reasons your tutor gave you. Also it’s not her fault that her alternative is not convenient.

idontgetitdoyou · 05/02/2026 18:00

Wow - that's pretty entitled of you OP and you're a late payer. YABU.

Tuesdayschild50 · 05/02/2026 18:21

She is running a business .
Imagine all her appointments did this..its her living don't be cheeky she has bills as we all do.

Lyraloo · 05/02/2026 18:40

If you turned up at work and the building was unavailable, would you expect to be paid? That’s your answer!

Viviennemary · 05/02/2026 18:47

She offered
you another date. You refused so you need to pay.

MuthaNurture · 05/02/2026 18:55

When my child was ill and couldn’t make a lesson booked for that day I didn’t wait to be asked, I immediately said “invoice as usual
obviously”.

Mrsgreen100 · 05/02/2026 19:01

I can’t believe that you are complaining about this. Get yourself un busy at the weekend. The Tutor has offered a spot at the weekend. What a generous offer. Seriously check yourself.

Zerosleep · 05/02/2026 19:13

YABU. This is part of her income, you had a time booked and you are cancelling on the day. Not her problem. You take the hit. Same with swimming or anything else.

Laura95167 · 05/02/2026 19:19

Youre massively unreasonable.

PWPmum · 04/02/2026 10:00

She only offered one time slot at the weekend which is when my DS has a sports club.
It just feels a bit off that she won’t credit the lesson into next month as I’ve recommended her to other people so she’s benefitted from that and one time she cancelled on the day as she was unwell and that time she did roll the credit over.

Yes, if she cancels she credits you because its her fault. When you cancel she doesnt because its yours.

Washingupdone · 05/02/2026 19:46

I have been in this position, that is to say a a tutor. When someone books for the school year, that day and time is reserved for the whole of the school year. If the student unfortunately falls ill their time, as a tutor money is lost and can’t be replaced. OP your tutor kindly offered another time, that is very generous of them it is not their fault you are otherwise engaged.

You're unreasonable. You know the terms, stick to them. What you want isn't the same as what you agreed to. Be the adult or bow out of the agreement and find a weaker tutor who will bend to your unreasonable, and obviously childish demands.

Seriously. Stop this nonsense.

Like I said in my comment…don’t think the OP is intelligent enough to work that out.
Maybe she needs a tutor

Sennelier1 · 05/02/2026 20:10

You are saying she already had to chase you to be paid ànd now you expect her not to ask payment for a lesson yóu annuled at the last moment? You dó know she does this tutoring for a living, right? Not because she's your best friend..

Obeseandashamed · 05/02/2026 20:27

I would expect to pay for the missed session but also for any sessions not taken due to holidays as I would be fuming if my weekly slot was given to somebody else 😬

She’s running a business. It’s not her fault she’s not working, why should she loose money.

VecnasSkinnyLatte · 05/02/2026 21:05

And…. another example of how teachers and tutors are undervalued by certain members of the public 🙄

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 05/02/2026 21:17

Very unreasonable. Standard practice:

you cancel - you still pay (not her fault)
she cancels - you don’t pay (is her fault).

hopefully there’s a contract that says all this?

if this wasn’t the case then people would mess her around and cancel things - she can’t then fill the space with little warning and so loses money.

you’ve already said people didn’t pay on time - including you. So you’ve contributed to her having to change her terms.

RoxyRoo2011 · 05/02/2026 21:21

Can’t get past the tutor for Y6 SATS to be honest. I think you’re being unreasonable on both fronts.
