To be concerned about Jamie Oliver's kitchen

I love Jamie. Wont hear a word against him

But I grow more and more 'concerned' (I like this word more and more these days, everyone has 'concerns' about something and this is mine) about his kitchen and his handling

Poor Jamie does not seem to have many bowls and spoons

He mashes up things on a wooden board with his hands

He scrunches things with his hands, no spoon available

He chops and bashes things with the wrong implements, like the bottom of a glass or something

Tonight he mashed potato on a chopping board and now scrunching up mince potato and carrot with his hands.

Then with his mincey hands he moves the bowl, touches this, touches that. No tea towels either.

Here he goes again right now, layering all his chopped veg on the worktop. Directly on it

No plates available again I see Jamie.

The rolling pin was the first option I tried, and it wasnt (wo)man enough!! I also wondered at Mary's strength!

wow I found it easy enough with a wooden rolling pin and a wooden chopping board

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Edited

Every time I reread this post it makes me laugh 🤣🤣🤣

Markovenchip · 03/02/2026 18:28

Nothing wrong using hands as long as thoroughly washed, I mean, cooks/chefs are happy to taste things as they're cooking, germs are overrated

It's ironic given he has a range of cookware. I've got a jamie pestle and mortar. He probably uses a shoe and a shuttlecock

God this made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣

The knife 'hack' (am I allowed to say hack?), is a great one, works everytime, except that when you come to take the stone off the big old sharp knife, slippery round stone wedged solid on the knife, with slippery avocado covered fingers off the big old sharp knife....well you can see where Im going with this.

Precisely why it annoys me to see cooks doing it instead of using a teaspoon.

Another thing I noticed last night, when scraping things off of a chopping board he uses the sharp side of the knife. Why ? Use the back to keep the knife sharp.

SALaw · 03/02/2026 18:47

I own a Jamie Oliver cutlery set - you’d think he could have held onto one for himself!

Has he poisoned you? It's OK you don't need to eat it or copy it

I made spag bol today, I can confirm no squidging the tomatoes up with my hands or snipping in the can . I made soffrito in a mini chopper as had run out of the frozen stuff and 'Whazzed' the toms up in it afterwards as it had already had been used. I prefer snipping it with scissors. Spag bol turned out Pukka, get in there!

Sorry @CherryRipe1my comment wasn’t aimed at you!

I saw this with the mashing of the potatoes on the chopping board. I expect he is trying to make cooking look cool and accessible and off the cuff and I sort of admire him for not making it seem like you need a million utensils.

But the potatoes were presumably cooked in a pan. They could have been mashed in the pan. Using a board instead is using more equipment than necessary.

I think he microwaved them in their skins then halved them then boshed them with a masher skin side down & the spud extruded through & he mashed them. He then crisped the skins in the microwave. I was only half watching as I've got the attention span of a newt but think that was it.

PurpleVine · 03/02/2026 20:59

dying at a shoe and a shuttlecock.

quite fancying well educated millionaire for a name change as well 😂

ismiledather · 03/02/2026 22:52

@GentlyDoesItt

Thankyou for explaining. Your mum sounds lovely. Jamie does not.

Yes and I was interested. I have arthritis in my hands and peeling veg is difficult. I love mash and I immediately thought I would try this method as it would be ideal for me.

Hopefully it's made mash more accessible for me.

Same, I've got RA & a rheumatoid disease so I empathise with you. There's another way where you can boil or microwave spuds in their skins, halve and pass through a wire grill rack or cooling rack with a plate underneath ,as long as they're the criss cross square types (& not cruddy)! I also bought a potato tumbler. They're a bit fiddly to get the lid on just right but what a joy to peel 6 medium spuds in less than a minute or sweet potato. I do a couple of days worth & either freeze the extra mash or keep the extra spuds in cold water in the fridge.

ProfessorBinturong · 04/02/2026 10:30

Or you can just eat the skins. They're good for.you.

We find ways round the issues. I'm always interested in tips people finding work.

I do eat skins but not in mash.

wandererofthekingdom · 04/02/2026 16:34

This post has made me laugh so much. You are so right I often watch this program wondering why he can't just use a bowl!
I also like to sit there saying well that recipe doesn't really cost under a fiver because I had to buy a whole pack of rice noodles not just 1 nest Jamie! Plus the sesame seeds plus the harissa paste! Where are you with the meal plan for the whole week Jamie that uses the rest of these ingredients otherwise I will starve!!
