Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Its a dog and the caravan is no dogs
Its not complicated really

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 08:45

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

You selfish mare.

I am allergic to cats and dogs. Even your rat.

No being in a caravan where a dog has been the week before won't kill me. But it will make me wheeze and sneeze, and my eyes will swell up like i've gone 8 rounds in a boxing ring. I'd have to at the very least go to the chemist for antihistamines, possibly to the GP for an inhaler or steroids. That would fuck up my holiday.

Shameless and entitled. Disgusting behaviour.

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

Gosh, well it must never have happened then 🙄
Why even bother asking? You’re clearly going to do what you want because despite people telling you you’re being a selfish entitled cunt, you really don’t give a fuck. You just go and be you, and hopefully one day karma will come your way.

As someone who has a DH and DD both with life threatening allergies (plus my own less serious ones) this thread is just a confirmation of how little clue some people have about the effects of allergens and why it is necessary to keep others safe. I have had people give my DH food they cooked with nut oil because even though I said he was ‘deathly allergic’ they ‘didn’t know it would be as serious as all that.’ A friend gave me a blanket her cat had slept on and then was ‘surprised’ when (even though I had said ‘is this free of animal hair I’m really allergic’) I broke out head to toe in hives and had to abandon my overnight stay with her. People cooking for DD in the same pan where they just cooked her allergens because even though I said ‘she can die if she even has trace amounts’, they thought I was exaggerating. It’s tiring and really bloody makes me angry to see the selfishness of OP. I hope she has a terrible holiday.

twats that smoke just outside the entrance to the hospital and trigger asthma attacks in already sick children. Smoke away from entrances so you can be avoided. It's costing the NHS money for ambulances, A and E visits, 111/999 calls, extra hospital appointments, drs appointments all because they can't walk away from entrances and smoke out of the way. (Just one kid)

You probably have but just didn’t listen.

Jackiepqueen · 03/02/2026 10:44

I do it all the time but I have a small chihuahua. I deep clean once I’ve leftovers

Read the thread. Would you still do it?

Would you walk up to a kid and squeeze your hands round their throat? Obviously not, but you are cutting off their airways by exposing them to an allergen that triggers asthma or anaphylaxis just the same result. The meds don't always work. People die of asthma and allergies. How would you feel if it happened in the caravan you'd just stayed in?

2026namechange · 03/02/2026 11:31

It’s really inconsiderate @oceanmountain to do this. I’m allergic to dogs and I can’t stay anywhere “dog friendly”. It doesn’t matter if it has been cleaned, it’s not enough. I will have a reaction and a miserable holiday. Non dog friendly caravans etc are hard to come by and will be booked by people in the same situation as myself, or who don’t want to be around dog dander for other valid reasons.

Call the campsite and swap to a dog friendly caravan or put your dog in kennels. YABU

LoveBluey · 03/02/2026 11:35

I don’t have allergies but I just don’t like the dog smell. I can always tell when I go to friends houses and I have left pubs/cafes before when they are dog friendly and I’ve found the smell overpowering. I appreciate that’s my choice but I would be very unimpressed to pay to stay in a caravan that had previously had a dog staying.

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

So have the accounts from people who would become very ill or whose kids would become very ill if they came into contact with dander, fur or saliva from your dog changed your mind at all, @oceanmountain? Can you say you would be happy to know that you had spoiled someone's holiday by making them or their kid ill, because you were too selfish to find a proper solution for your dog?

Are you really that entitled, selfish and self-centred? I genuinely hope that you aren't, but your attitude on here doesn't fill me with confidence.

2026namechange · 03/02/2026 11:39

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:36

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Of course it’s an option don’t be ridiculous. The first time any dog goes into a kennel is the first time. I have read all your updates - you are clearly going to do this anyway. The entitlement of dog owners who wilfully disregard the impact of their pet on those with allergies - yes even a “hypoallergenic” breed, yes even a small one, yes even if you have cleaned and yes, even yours will never cease to amaze me. Shocking behaviour - I hope you are caught and fined and your holiday cut short.

Hoppinggreen · 03/02/2026 11:41

You are going to deep clean?
So I assume you are taking a specialist cleaning machine to do all upholstery and carpets - its going to be a bugger to get that in the car

Teenagerantruns · 03/02/2026 11:46

To be honest l worked in a holiday park last year, there was supposed to be no dogs allowed, loads of people bought thier dogs, as long as they weren't in the inside entertainment, no staff or managers cared. Most had an assistdog coat on, easy to buy from amazon.
If l was severely allergic to dogs l would never stay on a holiday park they are everywhere.

Balloonhearts · 03/02/2026 11:50

I'm out. Pointless, arguing with stupid.

Tink3rbell30 · 03/02/2026 10:43

You would ruin my holiday if I was staying after you as I have allergies. I really hope this is a troll but I think someone really cares that little about other people.

It’s dog people unfortunately - not all of them and I do know some very considerate dog owners. But on the whole they are selfish, misanthropic and think their dog is more important than anything else. It’s exhausting and embarrassing.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 03/02/2026 11:52

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

I think you're being really selfish if you do it. When we go to a caravan, we purposely choose caravans that are not near dog friendly ones. I'd be really pissed off if somebody did what you plan to do. I don't want to be near dogs, I don't want to hear them barking near me and I certainly don't want them running up to me - which I've had to put up with before on such holidays.
One holiday, we were outside the caravan, but inside the garden area, having a barbecue and a smallish dog jumped up onto my lap which the owner thought was cute - I just thought it was annoying and the dog should have been on a bloody lead!
Choose one of the hundreds of other caravan parks that have the correct accommodation for you on this occasion.

Some of the comments on here.... I think are ridiculous. Completley bonkers but then again this is mumsnet where no one will answer the door.

My family are dead, my friends are busy as it will be school holiday week!

I'm going to look into rover but If I cant find anything suitable then I will be taking her with me. I wont be cancelling on my kids, she's been on lots of caravan holidays with us before so I know she wont wreck the place if we leave her for a hour or two on the evening.

If I get kicked out then so be it, although I have never paid attention to what anyone is doing in the van next to me. Why would I?!

Why ask then?! I dont get these posts.

I use Rover, its great.

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

Even if no one is ill.

I find it hard to believe you would go against the terms of your booking. You know you are not allowed but insist on doing it anyway.

Not sure why you posted when you are being so unreasonable and ignoring everyone.

Would you take a dog into a hotel room that doesn't allow dogs?

Would you take a dog into another private business that doesn't allow dogs?

You have choices. Kennels? Don't go?

Your entitlement that you're just doing anyway astounds me.

windowcasement · 03/02/2026 12:13

If you want to carry on being heedlessly selfish, and model that behaviour for your kids, then that's up to you.

But you do need to be aware that allergic reactions to dogs aren't triggered just by dog hair – they're also triggered by dander (ie dead skin cells), saliva, and urine. There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog.

In fact, it's dead skin cells from dogs that are the main triggers of allergic reactions, not hair – like all mammals, dogs shed around 30-40,000 per minute. That's 40-60 million skin cells per day. They're microscopic, obviously, and linger in the air, not just on surfaces.

So if you want to put someone else – either an adult, or a child, just like the children you want to take on this holiday – at risk of a serious allergic reaction by taking your dog to this caravan, go right ahead. You obviously don't really care about harming other people.

Climbingrosexx · 03/02/2026 12:15

I am not sure what the purpose of this post was but if you wanted to play into the hands of those who hate dogs and their owners then well done!

I am sick to the back teeth of the vitriol aimed at dog owners, we are NOT all nose blind, we dont all stink or have homes or dogs that stink, some of us actually go out of our way to make sure that is not the case.

I take my dog on holiday but only to pet friendly places and we pay extra for that as we should. Whenever we take her anywhere we make sure she does not impose on other people.

Many of us are responsible owners but my goodness you are making it very hard to defend dog ownership at all. Unfortunately looking at this thread many people think we all take your attitude. We DON'T!

Port1aCastis · 03/02/2026 12:32

I run a holiday let company and keep most of my properties dog free because of allergies cleanliness and past disturbances to neighbours. If someone sneaked in a dog and I found out (I do visits to say Hello) I'd have to ask them to leave. I don't want dog hair, dog poo or a barking dog in my cottages or in gardens.

DeanStockwell · 03/02/2026 12:34

Heronwatcher · 02/02/2026 16:24

Christ we’ve found someone with a more dubious moral compass than the OP!

I can’t believe you’d lie about being disabled- and appear to be proud of it. It’s people like you who make lives of those with genuine disabilities more difficult and contribute to the people who think that all
disabled people are workshy and/ or taking the piss with reasonable adjustments. You really should take a look at yourself.

Very much agree with this, I am a dog lover and have owned them in the past, it really annoys me when people are so selfish like this.

To be fair the fast majority of posters on this thread have absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners when they are responsible owners like you.

The understandable reaction here is down to potential irresponsible behaviour from the OP who subsequently gives dog owners in general a bad name. There are people who are cruel to children while the vast majority of parents cherish their children. Unfortunately the cruel minority means all parents are under the microscope & are often judged no matter how good their parenting skills. It's the same with dog owners.

Screamingabdabz · 03/02/2026 13:04

Not only are you totally inconsiderate and selfish, you’re passing on those values to your kids. Great. Well done you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🙄

YeOldeGreyhound · 03/02/2026 13:11

Zanatdy · 03/02/2026 05:45

Exactly, and if your child is terrified of dogs, going to a holiday park that allows dogs (which the park does) would be a silly thing to do. I’d just take the dog and do a thorough clean after, even though most people will tell you its selfish. Have you looked at a sitter who comes to your home?

How can you give the caravan a thorough clean after? OP would have to bring multiple cleaning supplies, inclding a vacuum cleaner.

No, don't tar us all with the same brush like that. Responsible dog owners hate entitled twats as much as everyone else.
But please don't think we are all alike because we happen to have dogs.
