Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

You've already decided. Why even ask. Is it just to annoy people with your selfishness?

I think @Frequency is offering dog-sitting services. That’s how I read it.

Thank you & my apologies @Frequency It was unclear so my post doesn't apply to your kind invitation. I'll leave it for the attention of others who agree OP should sneak her dog in.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 03/02/2026 10:04

I hope you find someone on Rover because it's a really bad idea to take the dog along knowing you are breaking the site rules. For starters, breaking rules sets a bad example for your kids, and some people really do suffer from severe allergies; although rare, it can cause anaphylaxis. Your dog only has to scratch itself, and small particles of skin can be airborne. No matter how much you hoover and spray, you will not eliminate all the airborne particles. Yes, it's extreme, but just imagine if one of your children were severely allergic. At least the caravan site knows the risks and is being responsible. We have used rover for our dog and were really pleased with the service. Please do the right thing and don't hold such disregard for other people.

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

You think that it’s funny that I have been hospitalised several times due to asthma attacks brought on by animal allergies?!

randomchap · 03/02/2026 10:11

This is either rage bait, or a horribly entitled person.

Either way op does not come across as a decent person.

Changingtimes81 · 03/02/2026 10:12

Frequency · 03/02/2026 09:58

We have five dogs here already, and 2 cats, so people who are allergic would probably avoid our house. I was offering to have OP's dog here, not go with her on her holiday Hmm

Exactly why I posted an apology for the misunderstanding.

Tink3rbell30 · 03/02/2026 10:15

So what about the next family who are staying? They booked a pet free van. What if that's down to allergies or do you simply not care that their holiday could be ruined? Sort yourself out.

Some of the comments on here.... I think are ridiculous. Completley bonkers but then again this is mumsnet where no one will answer the door.

My family are dead, my friends are busy as it will be school holiday week!

I'm going to look into rover but If I cant find anything suitable then I will be taking her with me. I wont be cancelling on my kids, she's been on lots of caravan holidays with us before so I know she wont wreck the place if we leave her for a hour or two on the evening.

If I get kicked out then so be it, although I have never paid attention to what anyone is doing in the van next to me. Why would I?!

So you're not willing to change your holiday plans, but perfectly happy to potentially ruin someone else's who need a pet free environment due to allergies?
I'm saying this as someone with a family member who would bot be able to stay in the caravan if a dog had been in it. Cleaning doesn't get rid of the allergies in the air.

Definitely hope they are as well.

Yeah because dog allergies are unheard of? You are either the thickest person on earth or a self entitled twat. Neither is a good look. God help your kids with you as a role model. People can only hope karma gets you and even if it does you won't admit to it.
You could at least admit you are a self centred piece of crap though...

I hope someone contacts Haven head office to ask them to be aware there are people prepared to bring dogs to their dog free caravans & they need to take more preventative action. They could be sued although I believe they know this which is why certain caravans are trusted to be dog free.

Honeymonster3 · 03/02/2026 10:31

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

Just a different perspective for you... My son has allergies to dogs so severe that when he was young we had a dog and had to re-home him because my son's chest was becoming deformed his rib cage was being pushed out from his allergies. It's not about the fur - he has allergies to pet dander which is the skin shedding ALL dogs shed skin flakes it's not just about the fur! Please think about the next person who will come after you, we have been on holidays before where there were clearly pets in the caravan before us and no matter how well you think you "clean" the dander can stay in the carpet for months. Please don't be selfish and think about who you may be harming these rules are in place for a reason....

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:14

Its a dog friendly site but I don't have a dog friendly caravan and they have non left.

Have a look on the Nextdoor App to find suitable
Registered dog sitters. There are always people on there offering pet care and you can check out their feedback

Meteorite87 · 03/02/2026 10:41

Mustreadabook · 03/02/2026 09:00

I’m allergic to cats and once had an asthma attack from cats that had moved out 6 weeks before I visited.

I hope you recovered completely.

Tte focus is always on what can be seen, "they don't shed" but there is much more to a severe allergic reaction than that.

Tink3rbell30 · 03/02/2026 10:43

You would ruin my holiday if I was staying after you as I have allergies. I really hope this is a troll but I think someone really cares that little about other people.

I do it all the time but I have a small chihuahua. I deep clean once I’ve leftovers

sugarapplelane · 03/02/2026 10:52

Why bloody ask on here if you’re just going to do what you want to do anyway? Why bother wasting your time and other people’s?
I think you sound like a difficult person; obtuse and defiant. I can imagine if a member of staff tells you to pack up and go home with an unapproved animal you would kick off and create a scene.
Stop being so defiant and listen to people telling you that you are doing the wrong thing. Stop being so selfish.
I know a few people who are highly allergic to animal hair. They can’t even bare to be in my house for 5 minutes with my cat. Just imagine if they had booked your caravan after you and spent the whole time sneezing with eyes watering. It’s not fair.
Your dog - your problem.
And don’t even get me started on tacky caravan sites with god awful cheesy entertainment and arcades. My idea of hell.

Not everyone dies if they get near a nut. Some do though. Regardless of that, dogs, any dogs, stink the place out.

You are the reason people get so pissed off with over entitled dog owners. 🤬

I hope you get caught and evicted. 🤞

Sorry but they may be small but they are not hypoallergenic can trigger allergies and you cannot clean all the dander they leave behind

book a dog friendly place or don’t take them / chances are someone has reacted to what you have left behind

The entitlement of some dog owners is staggering. I blame the madness of COVID and surge in ownership.

See also the recent thread about another deluded owner being horrified that someone had the audacity to park their car next to her precious, untethered pooch.

I couldn't read beyond the first post of the dog/parking thread, it gave me such rage.

It was one of those posts that make me think that there should be some sort of test before anyone's allowed to have a dog, to make sure that they're not a complete idiot. And I say that as someone who's spent more than 40 years sharing their home with various dogs.

Please don't do this again. Lots of people after you may have allergies and that's why they booked pet free. Book a dog friendly, don't ruin other people's breaks. If I was after you I would react and it would ruin my break.

What type of dog @oceanmountain , and where are you roughly? I WFH, and one more tiny dog being here for a week would be barely noticeable due to DD's penchant for collecting chihuahuas.

How funny, I was thinking of offering, too!

I'm in Sussex, OP, if that's anywhere near where you are or where you're going and as long as it's not in April (I have a whippet coming to stay for 3 weeks, and she would regard a very small dog as a tempting snack!).

Hopefully someone who works for haven is in this thread and can do a check of sites in a couple of weeks. Put the word out across them maybe. And maybe do some general checks of the pet free spaces??
