Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

Don be facetious

your examples are different contact is low and people can take appropriate measures and medication.

what you are suggesting is taking a dog to a caravan that will shed (non shedding is not a thing you have a low shedding dog - everything sheds) in an environment that someone will be spending considerable time in expecting it not to be one that dogs have been in

even if it isn’t a deadly attack or hospitalised both myself and DD would suffer allergy attacks which would ruin our holiday and would make us feel pretty rough for 2-3 days

The exposure from a pub for example yes can set me off sneezing but going away from the cause and an antihistamine would settle it - in an environment for a longer time that had a dog would cause the allergy to continue

You are being incredibly selfish - putting your needs first and not thinking of others or th consequences of your actions

Now imagine if I sneak her in and dont get caught at all, no drama, no problems, we all just carry on with our lives and I leave after having a nice time for me kids...

And imagine the next person checking in and having a horrible holiday due to booking a dog free caravan filled with dog. What fun!

Why did you bother posting OP?

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 09:00

Some of the comments on here.... I think are ridiculous. Completley bonkers but then again this is mumsnet where no one will answer the door.

My family are dead, my friends are busy as it will be school holiday week!

I'm going to look into rover but If I cant find anything suitable then I will be taking her with me. I wont be cancelling on my kids, she's been on lots of caravan holidays with us before so I know she wont wreck the place if we leave her for a hour or two on the evening.

If I get kicked out then so be it, although I have never paid attention to what anyone is doing in the van next to me. Why would I?!

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

I’m allergic to cats and once had an asthma attack from cats that had moved out 6 weeks before I visited.

Quite an unpleasant, selfish, view.

Never mind the dog, I feel rather sorry for your kids to have you as a role model.

And then the next holidaymakers' children are violently ill. You're an absolute charmer aren't you?!

Do you have any allergies or asthma OP at all?

The thing is what you are suggesting is incredibly selfish you do get that don’t you?

and allergic reactions/asthma attacks are not and never will be ridiculous

Yes, dangerous. My son is severely allergic. His allergy causes him severe asthma attacks, asthma attacks are dangerous and can be life threatening. You are a horribly selfish person and it is very, very clear that you are going to take the dog regardless of what anyone says.

A lot of caravans on these sites are owned by private individuals and rented out on their behalf by the company. If they are specifying that it’s a dog free house maybe the owner has a family member with a serious allergy. Regardless, they don’t want your stinking mutt (and I say this as a dog owner) in their property. Stop being such a selfish entitled arse and book your dog into kennels or cancel your trip. FFS.

Of course you don't pay attention to who's in the next van - you don't seem to have any awareness for others and all your attention is on you!

Its the people who come after you in the caravan i feel sorry for.

Never known so many people to so say have violently ill kids if they come into contact with a dog all of a sudden🙄

Its not the dog it's the dander and fur that sets off asthma attacks v

Gizlotsmum · 03/02/2026 09:09

Good luck. It is really selfish to do this but you aren’t taking on the valid points made and I am sure if nothing happens you will do it again. As people have mentioned it’s the people after you/the cleaners who will be impacted so no skin off your nose right?

You are the kind of dog owner that gives us all a bad name.

If the next family who stays in the caravan has someone with a dog hair allergy it could make them ill. Cleaning doesn't always get rid of all dander. It's not "bonkers" it's a fact.

Most holiday accommodation, even pet friendly, doesn't allow pets to be there unsupervised, either.

Having a pet, like having children, is a responsibility. We had to cancel a weekend away last year because our elderly terrier, who died not long after that, got sick and it wouldn't have been fair to travel with him or to leave a sick dog with my mum. Yes we lost money. Yes DC were disappointed. But that's life. They got over it, and we gave our dog a calm, peaceful few weeks at the end of his life.

I have 3 rescue dogs and not a chance would I take them somewhere they are not allowed, it's not fair on others and it gives the dog owner hating people fuel for the fire. Please don't be selfish.

namechangetheworld · 03/02/2026 09:16

I'd be fuming if I reserved a pet-free caravan for it to reek of dog when I got there. Because they ALL smell, regardless of how disillusioned their owners are.

oceanmountain · 03/02/2026 09:05

Because you’re only thinking of yourself. It’s not just kids. Adults too. They may not have a life threatening reaction, but even a small reaction is uncomfortable and just not f fair OP. Why should they suffer because you are so selfish?? They’ve paid for their holiday just like you.

but regardless of the anaphylaxis risk it’s just not on OP. Dogs smell and leave hair, they poo/wee. People choose pet free spaces for a reason.

You clearly don’t care so once again - why did you post?? What was the point?? Did you hope we’d all say yeah go for it! We all want to get wheezy and sit in pet hair and tread in dog wee/poo.

MathsMum3 · 03/02/2026 09:17

Honestly I'm sick of reading posts on here by people who think rules don't apply to them. You're not special OP and neither is your dog. The caravan site has rules for reasons which you can't know about. It's really arrogant and selfish of you to think you don't need to abide by them because you seem to think you somehow know better. You chose to get a dog, so it's your problem. Don't try to make it somebody else's.

Have you read the responses? It isn’t in contact with the dog per se as that is short lived and can be easily managed

it is what is left behind and is next to impossible for you to clean up - you are leaving something that consistent exposure can cause harm to someone

and it isn’t just violently ill either it could mean for example I would have allergy symptoms the whole week that would make be feel rough - like a cold just because you feel your rights are more than others

the chances of you doing this and not impacting someone even slightly is pretty much non existent - and that does include mild hayfever symptoms

Allergy typically isn't "see dog - fall dead"

Length and intensity of the contact matter.

People who can manage a brief meeting with a dog at tiled floor shop, are in very different situation indoors, sitting on the same sofa the dog lied before them.

Normal clean up just isn't enough to get rid of saliva and fur residues.
