Taking the Dog on Holiday Without Telling the Caravan Site… Am I Mad?!

1000 replies

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:11

So I’m going away in a couple of weeks and had a dog sitter all sorted… and now they’ve just cancelled because of a family emergency.

I’ve tried everywhere and can’t find anyone else to take the dog on such short notice, and I really don’t want to cancel the trip and upset the kids. So I was thinking of just taking the dog with me and not telling the caravan site.

Has anyone ever done this? My dog’s tiny and doesn’t shed, so I honestly don’t know how they’d even notice.

My friend said I shouldn't do it but I cant see any other option?

The next people in the caravan could be highly allergic to dogs and booked a dog free caravan for a reason. Don’t be so selfish! If your dog is really no bother then I’m sure a family member or friend would be jumping at the chance to look after it for you!

Ohgoonthenanotheronefortheroad · 03/02/2026 07:33

🙄🙄 a live example of why there are so many threads about selfish dog owners on here. There's a reason why some accommodation is dog friendly and some isn't.

I have a severe allergy to dogs and it's not just from their fur/linked to whether they shed or not. When we were in non-dog accommodation at Center Parcs, I took a reaction so someone had clearly had a pet in our lodge before us and it still had an impact, despite being clean. Don't be so selfish.

DaisyChain505 · 03/02/2026 07:48

As a dog owner myself I say YABVU.

KvotheTheBloodless · 03/02/2026 07:55

Sorry OP, I know it's horrible to disappoint your DC, but you really shouldn't do this. People with severe dog allergies may book this caravan, there is no way you will have the time (or inclination) to completely gut the place and deep clean it. You could make someone extremely unwell. What if it was your child who ended up in hospital because a previous guest thought their happiness was more important than your child's life-threatening asthma or anaphylaxis?

Poppy61 · 03/02/2026 08:03

A dog is a dog, no matter what size or breed it is. You've planned a holiday without your dog originally, hence the dog sitter. Now your circumstances have changed, you want other people to accommodate that and are trying to justify it. We would love a dog, but we understand the restraints and commitment that comes with it, so we don't have a dog.

Dogs are everywhere in holiday parks, you cant stop a person taking their dog for a walk near you van. People walk their dogs around the whole site.

Ideqlly move your week of holiday to dog friendly caravan. If all else fails Take the dog. Being that small they won't even notice ... just ensure you don't have food bowls etc out . If some caravans are dog friendly no one will notice ! I'd also ask about extra cleaning fee. I wouldn't recommend if it was a shedding dog though due to allergies . People on here are being ridiculous ....

Trixibell1234 · 03/02/2026 08:07

I’m allergic to pets. Sorry not RTFT. It’s not the hair, it’s the dandruff they shed. It’s invisible really - no amount of vacuuming in that moment or week or month makes a difference if it’s a severe allergy (I get asthma and have been in a and e before as I couldn’t breathe and the inhaler made no difference).

Dogs never been in kennels so not an option.

Well there always has to be a first time.

This is what comes with dog ownership. Same as when you become a parent. It is your responsibility to find care for your dog. You wouldn't sneak a child into an adult only venue if your babysitter cancelled.

It is very selfish to take a dog into a non dog friendly caravan. You could spoil another child's holiday if they had an allergic reaction.

Changingtimes81 · 03/02/2026 08:12

Zanatdy · 03/02/2026 05:45

Exactly, and if your child is terrified of dogs, going to a holiday park that allows dogs (which the park does) would be a silly thing to do. I’d just take the dog and do a thorough clean after, even though most people will tell you its selfish. Have you looked at a sitter who comes to your home?

The fact you believe a 'thorough clean' would rid the caravan of embedded allergens in the soft fabrics etc proves you have absolutely no knowledge of the situation. This, plus a child possibly ending up in hospital sounds like it would give you no guilt whatsoever. Thankfully posts like this are in a small minority.

Ginburee · 03/02/2026 08:14

Absolutely not and totally unfair in you.
I have stayed in a dog free place that had obviously had a dog as there was hair- it's really difficult to prove if you are the next family in and have allergies.
Dog allergies mixed with asthma can end in a hospital visit or admission and ruin the next guests visit.
Totally selfish, book a kennel or don't go.

Edited

All dogs shed dander which thorough cleaning doesn't shift. Do some research before supporting an idea which is not only selfish it's downright dangerous.

Tableforjoan · 03/02/2026 08:17

Ops also not thought though what happens if she needs to call out maintenance or her caravan neighbour does. Spots the dog in her van or on her deck. Because staff do know what caravans are what.

What’s more traumatic op.

Your children getting kicked off a holiday park, your dog going into kennels, or moving/cancelling the holiday.

The sticker vans have normally been abused by sneaking dogs in and are havens own fleet vans. 🫣

DrToothandtheElectricMayhem · 03/02/2026 08:25

Wow, OP.
You’re doing a sterling job of teaching your kids to be honest and to do the right thing by others. You’re definitely not teaching them that other people don’t matter as long as they’re happy and get what they want.
What a great role model.
Parent of the year.

nam3c4ang3 · 03/02/2026 08:31

Why on earth would you bother asking on here when you have made your mind up - you sound incredible selfish. Your poor children are being taught this is ok - lying? Parent of the year. Someone will spot you - report you and you will be thrown off the site.

Saltycaramelkiss · 03/02/2026 08:32

Look on a website called Rover. Lots of lovely people that dog sit or have in their home. You can meet them before too. You will absolutely find someone. But please don't do kennels ... ffs I'm surprised kennels even still exist 😖

Its possibly selfish yes - but How is it dangerous ? Have people died from dog dander ? Mildly Allergic people go into pubs etc all the time that allow dogs. It's possibly inconvenient with any flare up - but not dangerous. People that are hyper allergic to anything do not take chances and would never book anywhere that allow dogs even in different vans, as they just wouldn't take the chance

It's not the hair, it's the smell.

Dog owners are nose blind, but the rest of us know when a dog has been in an enclosed space. Even a teeny tiny little one. They all stink.

This is so true, neighbour takes their dog to be shampooed regularly and I can still smell it when I visit and it's not even there.
OP is very selfish if she's goes ahead with a dog in a no dog caravan. But she will do it anyway.

Dangerous? Really... Yes we always hear of people that die due to being near a dog. 🙄Dont be so dramatic.

If that was the case, dogs wouldn't be welcome practically everywhere. I can take my dog into the Lego store and Pandora in my city centre.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/02/2026 08:46

You wouldn't grab a child by the throat and squeeze tight...yet you would risk causing an asthma attack where the airways start to close so a kid can't breathe just because you can't get a dog sitter.

Manage my friends caravan....
Id be fuming if you did this.
So dishonest and selfish! My friend keeps his van pet free due to allergies and people not wanting their holiday home to smell of dog.

Which it will if you take your dog.

Not everyone likes dogs. Find another solution, leave the dog with family/friends. Dont lie!

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 03/02/2026 08:52

So, just so we’re all absolutely clear. OP, you’re going to take your dog anyway aren’t you?

OneShyQuail · 03/02/2026 08:53

oceanmountain · 02/02/2026 15:19

There would be no children in my van with allergies and I will clean before I go? and surely the site cleans the caravans too... no hair will be left as she's a non shedding breed

The entitlement is unreal 😁

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 03/02/2026 08:56

wow. The arrogance and entitlement of OP is quite breath breathtaking.

It would be very karmic if she decided to go ahead and sneak the dog in, for her holiday party and pooch to be unceremoniously turfed out of their van …

Now imagine if I sneak her in and dont get caught at all, no drama, no problems, we all just carry on with our lives and I leave after having a nice time for me kids...

KmcK87 · 03/02/2026 08:57

So this will be why my last caravan stunk of dog despite not being a dog friendly van. People are just taking them anyway stuff anyone who might have allergies. How selfish.

Find another place to go, there will be somewhere that has a dog friendly van available.
